The opening salvo of the secession movement that would become the Rimward Alliance, while they had encountered resistance from loyalist holdouts this was the first time they technically faced an attacking Republic task force. Despite being outnumbered and composed mostly of recruits, the Republic forces gave the Alliance a bloody nose that stalled their further involvement in the ensuing Galactic War.

The future leaders and other people of influence in what would become the Alliance had been meeting to discuss their secession for years prior. Outlying systems had already been acting autonomously for decades already, and as the tensions within the Republic grew it was easy to convince even the more Coreward systems to agree to succession. While less radical segments of the new government wanted to attempt to petition the Senate, between the talk of hostile actions against the Deep Core Union and resources promised by outside parties only on the condition of open rebellion, the choice became clear.

The rebellion was still for the most part bloodless, however, the Republic military would not let the situation go without some sort of a response. There were recruits training on Sullust at the time, however, the majority of these were either caught up in fighting or joining the other deserters and only one ship was away from the conflict and still responding to Military Command - the cruiser Legend. The Legend arrived near Eriadu to find three enemy cruisers with fighters deployed. The Legend deployed its own fighters and engaged.

Despite the odds, the Legend was able to hold off the enemy cruisers while its fighters mopped up their counterparts. However as they rushed back to engage the enemy cruisers, one managed to disengage in time to flank them. Worse, the Alliance fleet called up reserves of more modern fighters and the recruits found themselves outmatched. The cruiser went down with all hands and most of the fighter pilots perished as well. One of the survivors was Alex Chan, who received his commission for his actions in the battle and would go on to make a name for himself in the remainder of the war. Unfortunately, Chan was dishonorably discharged at the rank of Commander in an event that many still find controversial and suspicious.
