The Old Sith world of Korriban has been the site of many battles, but the most recent may have been one of its most lop-sided. The Republic fleet dispatched there was ostensibly sent as a show of force against the growing dissention among would-be rebels in the Outer Rim. However, Senate Intelligence in fact suspected that Darksider cultists were agitating the seditious plots and hoped that if the military could crush them on such an iconic world it would quell the resistance. The route to Koros Major and the Deep Core Union would then be clear and the Republic would ideally be able to coerce the other rebellious worlds into disarming.

The Republic Task Force charged through Stygian Caldera, expecting that the poorly trained and equipped cultists would be overcome in short order. What they found instead was a massive armada of Revanite era Sith warships that responded immediately to the invasion. Thanks to the Sith's interdiction technology, none of the Republic ships escaped, but the few ships that survived the initial onslaught dogged the Sith as best as they could. Nevertheless, most were killed and the higher ranking officers were captured and interrogated. The Sith used the intellignce they gathered to effectively surprised the Republic battlefleet at Koros Major with the bulk of their forces, while the rest aided the Mandolorains in assaulting isolated garrisons.
