Battle of Brentaal IV

The battle of the Brentaal system signaled the seriousness of the Republic's dilemma in the war. Up until then, fleets and ground units were scattered and caught up in planetary infighting. They could offer little resistance when Allied task forces sieged their worlds and were immediately forced to capitulate. With most of the loyalist militias and regular military forces already devoted to active task forces or gathered in the Core, the Chancellor and military High Command did not consider any additional worries from unresponsive worlds in the Rim.

This all changed when holdouts on Ralltir managed to get a message to Coruscant about Mandalorians invading. The Republic had already received intelligence that an armada had been spotted leaving Mandalore. It was clear the Mandalorians meant to breach the Core proper and could tip the balance for all the rebels in the region. The Republic decided to make a stand at Brentaal IV, though it was limited due to the faulty assumption that sizable numbers would make the Mandalorians cautious and stall them long enough for the Deep Core Task Force to return.

Though the cities of Brentaal IV are advanced even for Core Worlds, overpopulation had forced many residents to migrate to the harsh wastelands that were passed over for development. These frontierspeople became independent and tribal, and have provided problems for the planetary government. They tried to rectify the problem by employing them as civil and defense militia, though without offering them any real representation this exploitation only further solidified their rebellious nature. Still, they did not have the resources to take over Brentaal - until the Mandalorians provided it.

Armed with Mandalorian weapons and aided by Shadow Warriors the frontier tribes took advantage of the distraction caused by city-wide riots and overran all the military bases, and more importantly, the groundside ion cannons. These would seal the doom of the thousands of Republic sailors and Marines who would become trapped in their own vessels as they were fired upon immediately after entering the system. Yet the Republic kept sending more ships to investigate the disturbance and eventually there were enough active vessels to put up a defense. The Mandalorians, however, would not just leave the disabled ships to rot and instead used them as testing grounds for their raw recruits.

The Mandalorians won the battle, crushing a Republic task force that outnumbered them and gaining a whole new wave of battle tested auxiliaries.
