The Battle of Corulag was perhaps the last battle in the Great War in which the Republic stood a chance. Sadly, the outcome was still the same as in nearly every other battle, making the final result seem that much more inevitable. The Republic was now forced to admit that the Mandalorians were invading, and they were winning. The survivors of Brentaal IV had limped back battered, bruised and depleted. A real stand had to be made, but the decision was not easy. The tensions on the Core Worlds were becoming as dangerous as those in the Rim, with similar results. Troops and ships would be needed to hold key points from falling into rebel hands, which would draw more forces away from the counterattack. The commander of the Task Force to Corulag made a decision: leave the majority of their ground forces on Alsakan to keep the hyperspace route secure and their retreat open. Though they were able to quell the riots on the planet, this left the fleets with a scant few experienced marines to repel the boarding-happy Mandalorians - something which their enemy exploited to the fullest. The Mandalorians had lost the element of surprise and now had to deal with an entrenched enemy that expected them. Worse, Corulag had an extensive defense system that included orbital stations heavily armed with both anti-fighter and anti-ship weapons. Any offensive would be met with stationery ion and laser fire, while the Republic's superior smaller craft could harass them at their leuisure. To counter this, the warchiefs changed their tactics drastically. Instead of barrelling into the system, they appeared on the edge and crept slowly towards the planet in normal space. A fighter Squadron that was sent to investigate engaged the enemy, and found a fleet heading towards Corulag's orbit - and arming their nuclear missiles to fire at an unshielded portion of the planet. The fighters scrambled back and informed their leaders, only to become part of a desperate plan to catch the enemy offguard. A small portion of the Task Force would make a short hyperjump to the enemy's rear while they were engaged with the greater fleet. The plan was only partially successful, as many ships either arrived too close to the Mandalorians or within the gravity of Corulag. Still, what ships did make it were able to flank the Mandalorians and turn the fight into a pitched battle which could be won by attrition. Though the Republic proved more audacious than expected, they still ultimately fell into the Mandalorians' trap. Having received intelligence about the enemy's disposition, the clan leader of Wraith enacted an even bolder plan. With too many fighters screending the ships, the Mandalorians would have to find a better target for boarding, and with nothing but militia on the stations the choice was clear. Troopships laid in wait and flanked the stations once the Republic left. As with other planets, Sith and Mandalorian operatives had infiltrated but could not forment enough Anti Republic sentiment to launch a rebelliong. Instead, they demoralized the local government enough to comvince them to hold back the militia. Upon seeing the Republic leaving them while enemy ships closed in, security aboard the station panicked. Many fled, and fights ensued as loyalists tried to stop them. A few brave souls were able to hold the boarders for a time, but one station fell quickly and its guns turned on returning Republic vessels. Unable to take back the stations and taking heavy casualties from trying, along with the main enemy doggedly pursuing those that were leaving to help, the Republic sounded a retreat. Still, mthe Mandalorians would not give up. Alor Wraith repeated his enemy's tactic and hyperjumped directly behind them. The rearguard was not even set up, and the more offensively powerful Mando ships ripped them to shreds. The Reps were saved by unlikely and still unknown allies: strange ships appeared out of nowhere and decimated the Mando fleet. The remaining dreadnought was targetted by every remaining Rep ship, though the clan leader managed to escape in time. The Mandalorians won, but received a bloody nose they would never forget in the process. During the battle, many future heroes from both sides emerged. The young Alexander Chan, survivor from Eriadu, proved himself truly this time by using the enemy's homing missiles against them. He earned himself a place in Mandalorian lore, who dubbed him the Red Raptor for the appearance of his Chela fighter and his tenacity, and many still seek to challenge him to this day. From among the Mandos themselves, the most famous warriors to come out of the Volunteer Corps. made their names in this battle: the Iron Ghost, the Blood Wolf, and the Beserker Knight. |
