The Sack of Coruscant is known to all, yet is shrouded in as much infamy, confusion and mystery as mythic battles of the ancient past. So much had done wrong up to this point, and even considering the dismal failures and catastrophic defeats of previous battles, the combined might of the remaining Republic military should not have fallen so easily. It was the decay within the planet that caused its downfall. Social and political tensions had steadily risen on the capital for decades. The world could beat out half the galaxy in output, yet much of this potential was unused. The late Chancellor Keperev resolved to make sure this didn't go to waste, but soon found why no one before him in recent history had exploited Coruscant. Virtually every resource on the planet went towards maintaining the overwhelmingly gigantic population, which beat out the majority of the galactic population several times over, and the loss of anything was felt in waves. Yet Keperev eventually ssaw an easy solution to this that would fit his agenda, by using the most plentiful resource of all. On paper, less than one percent of the population doesn't seem like much, but a billion sentients being removed from their homes caused an understandable uproar. Even worse was the methods carried out, which included press-ganging, perhaps the first time in recorded Republic history. The response to this was predictably outrage, and Keperev through his security forces engaged in a see-saw of combative action with the remaining citizens of the lower reaches of Coruscant. The riots went on for months and caused a cascade effect, made worse by several coordinated prison breaks. The loss of many of these conscripts fighting dissidents on far-flung outposts, and eventually a large portion in the Deep Core, served to fuel the fire, as did the heavy-handed responses of the CSF and eventually the Army. By the time the Allied armada arrived, the lower class citizens of Coruscant were at war with the government, and there was open hostility on both sides. Still, the Allies would have to resort to infiltration as they did on the other worlds. They learned that the secret location of the planetary shield controls were within the Jedi Temple, and that there was a secret entrance to the Temple through the Works. During the riots many agents and allies were inserted into Coruscant, and many actions carried out to stretch the Republic - and the Jedi - thin. The Council was in the middle of a deep deliberation when Mandalorian Shadow Warriors cut the power temporarily, and were somehow able to hold off and even kill a few Masters while a stream of cultists and allied militia and thugs burst forth from their secret base to flood the Temple, and other forces overran surrounding areas to cut off reinforcements. At the same time, Sith allies infiltrated the largest orbital communication station to first disable it, then use it to transmit a virus to surrounding ships. While their compatriots on the ground cut a whole in the planet's shield, they ensured all the ships near it would be out of commission. The Republic fleet scrambled to fit in this gap when they realized what was happening, and they were easy targets for concentrated fire. The station itself was eventually overwhelmed and forced to self-destruct, leaving many ships in the dark as to what was going on around them. The Jedi were fighting a losing battle, as was the military outside the Temple. With the help of outside volunteers, they proceeded to evacuate their home while the remaining Masters and elder Knights fought a rearguard action to save time. Eventually, the Temple fell under a combined assault by Sith and Mandalorian reinforcements, led by the Dark Jedi Marauders and the Hand of the Sith himself. Meanwhile, as Republic battle lines crumbled everywhere, a hodge-podge rescue force consisting of Republic Special Forces, paramilitary agents, and whatever volunteers they could find, descended on the Senate Rotunda to evacuate the Chancellor and the last of the Senators. They arrived too late for Keperev, who was assassinated by Sith agents, yet they were successful in neutralizing the team that had killed him before they could do any more harm. The battle was over soon after, and Treaty Zero was hammered out with numerous concessions to the victors. Mass desertions in the Republic military followed. Despite this, there was praise to be had on both sides. The victorious allies celebrated unlikely heroes that had risen from their ranks. The Volunteer auxiliary leader, Merrik Wraith, who was already making something of a name for himself, was said to have joined with his comrade - the future Beserker Knight and the first true Wraith Clan warchief among the Mandalorian Knights, Shikamaru DaRey - in rallying the nearly broken Volunteers on Besh Station, then proceeding to ride the remains of the orbital down like a Basilisk to the surface and smash it into the Jedi Temple. The Marauder chief Darth Ira similarly gave praise for a lowly Acolyte who singlehandedly came to rescue his men while they were deep in enemy territory and joined with them fighting in the advance vanguard of the attack on the Temple. Reluctant praise was also given to some of the dissidents who directly served the Sith in tying down the Republic, though many of them disappeared promptly afterwards. Despite their loss, the Republic side had heroes. The few higher officers who still believed in the military sought to no end to acknowledge the efforts of one Alexander Chan, who in this battle managed to even top earlier exploits. He heroically took on a full Squadron of Sith fighters to buy time for his own pilots to escape, was shot down and survived, and even still opted to volunteer for the rescue mission of the Chancellor. Then there was Kirabi Cloud, a bounty hunter with a sense of duty who fought Darth Ira alongside future Master Coranas Kel and his apprentice, Taji Basra, and later fought alongside the Council before leading the evacuation of the Temple. There were many others too who through fate or conscience had been thrust into the Republic's fight, including some very unlikely heroes. Unfortunately, many joined Cloud and Chan in being accused just six months later of working with the Sith, tarnishing their reputation. To this day, these accusations are controversial and are reputed by the majority of those who served alongside them. What is also interesting about this battle, is how quickly many of the problems plaguing Coruscant seemed to dissipated overnight. The status quo was still more or less in place, but for some reason many of the tensions that lead to open conflict previously now were mitigated with compromise. |
