Personal logs of Professor Xera Rai

Was he my ultamite master piece? I created him to help with the rebuilding of Earth after the Mobians were devolved to their original forms. On paper he was the perfect slave and yet he resisted me, his creator. His brother and sister followed me why not him? Perhaps it lay in his heart and mind... Perhaps reviewing the documentation of his life will shed some light on his rebellious nature...

Planet Mobius has many tales to tell it is a planet that contains many strange and wondrous creatures. The origin of Shadow, prototype of the ultimate life form, the legacy of Sonic the Hedgehog, each and every tale contains its moments of happiness and joy, as well as sadness, and tears. But none are more strange then this tale. The story of Slash Terrapin, the story of a man who lost his life, his family, and his love, the very definition of all intelligent beings.

Prolog: Beginning of the End

The story begins deep underground, in the laboratory of Professor Xera Rai. A woman of science, loneliness is her only friend, for years she has been working on her masterpiece.

“Well my child, it is time for you to wake up, and help me build my New World order.” She declared. Typing a command into her main console, and slowly a capsule rose from the floor. Returning to her console she input another command, the capsule began to come to life. The liquid that filled the capsule began to drain and the creature’s form became clearer. With a large smile crossing her face Xera approached the capsule and began tapping the glass attempting to get its attention. As the creature began to stir, Xera took a few steps back and what appeared to be the front of the capsule began to open.

“Ok ok, come on open your eyes, say hello to your mommy!” Xera giggled

“Ma, mommy?” it groaned.

“That’s right my Tatakau turtle! I’m your mommy!”

“Tatakau? Is that my name?” Opening his eyes he took a long look at his creator, she stood at around 5 foot 11 she was young, her mid 20’s maybe she had long brown hair and green eyes. She stood before him in a white lab coat a smile grazing her face.

“Well that is your code name.” Xera broke the momentary silence. “It is Japanese it means fighting. I have been kicking around the name Slash, and now that I got a look at the finished product, yeah… I think that name will suit you just fine!” she opening her arms she gave her creation a big hug.

“Wha, what are you doing!?” Slash squealed squirming in her arms. Pulling back, Xera stared into Slash’s eyes.

“Listen turtle boy, I have been alone for a long time and…”

“Turtle?” Slash interrupted, raising his hands he gazed into his dark green skin as if he was staring into something that was not really there. Turning his attention back to his master, fear began to grow within him. Her eyes had become cold.

“Yes turtle! THAT is what you are!” Xera said sternly. “Hmpf, you may be my masterpiece but your manners could use some work! Now listen, as much as I would like to start our little operation… I think it would be best to wait for your siblings… Plus your mind is in no shape for any real work…”

“What do you mean?”

“That’s what I get for using recycled parts…” Xera mumbled “Listen, to put it bluntly you ignorance is temporary. You see your brain is special, I gave you a live time worth of experience. Ever hear the expression, Use it or loss it?” Slash stared back at her with a blank look. “Sigh. Of course you haven’t, not yet anyway. Your mind contains everything you will ever need to know, but because it hasn’t been used in 12,000 years all of it may seem fuzzy at first.”

“I see. Very well, so what now?”

Xera smiled again “We wait. I am happy you were completed early it is almost like the anticipation sped up the process… Once your brother and sister are read, you will lead them in cleansing this planet of the Mobians! They have infested this planet for far too long.”

“Mobians?”

“They are disgusting, primitive creatures, they stole the planet form my people, OUR people! They are evolved creatures that were once beneath us, but when the Xorda attack the Gene bomb they released gave them the gift of intelligence and they began to fight back. When Ivo Kintobor joined them during what was called the Great War, they got the edge they needed to defeat the last of our resistance and the planet was theirs.” Xera was nearly foaming at the mouth. “But I will take care of them. You see, I have done my homework. The gene bomb that allowed them to evolve was an accident; the gene bomb created a special virus that only effect animals. The virus, like all viruses altered their DNA; thus, it is still carried with all current Mobians. I have invented an anti-virus! One that will restore their DNA to its original state.”

“But, won’t we be guilty of the same sin as they are? Isn’t there a way to co-exist?”

“NO! They are freaks! I am perfect! I refuse to CO-EXIST with the imperfect!” Catching herself Xera regained her composure. “I… I am sorry. But I will not show any mercy. They are nothing but flea ridden pests.” A different smile curled on her lips, a twisted one. “The pain they caused… I will repay it ten fold! The process is incredibly painful their bones will twist and reshape. I will show them the true cruelty that is humanity.”
“I doubt many humans have seen that true cruelty either! No species should be defined by hate! If that is your plan I want no part of it, and I won’t let you harm anyone!” Reaching out quickly Slash grabbed Xera’s throat and she began to chuckle

“I see… I am sorry to hear that. You were like this when you were human as well… I see now the price of using a human heart and mind. The body is irrelevant, the heart and mind create the soul no matter where they are.” Slash’s grip began to loosen, a thousand thoughts began to rush through his mind, and his eyes seemed to glaze over.

Xera saw the opening and took it. She raised her hand into Slash’s face and it began to glow in a brilliant white light. The light formed into a ball, the light it gave off brought Slash back to this world. He returned just in time to see a flash of light and feel the burn of 1000 sun’s.

Chapter 1: Unify and Conquer

When the light faded, a new light began to shine. The sun was in full effect; today there was not a cloud in the sky. It was a quite day; there were just 2 people, a couple enjoying the sunny day. They were smiling and laughing, very much in love. They were at there favorite spot. A place full of memories, it was a small hill, with a single oak tree in the center. The two stood under the tree; the woman turned to her friend and began to speak. She opened her mouth and said…

“Hey, HEY! Wake up!” Suddenly the world around him began to fade. He closed his eyes and when he opened them again he was somewhere else. “Finally your awake, heh, you don’t got to go home but you can’t sleep here!”

“Where… Where am…” Slash groaned

“Where am I? Ugh what a predictable question… Ok… YOU, are in the camp of the Pepper Island Freedom fighters. We found you 3 days ago severally burned on the outskirts of the island. Heh, when I saw you, I thought you were dead, or deadish… And to save some time, I am Alice. Who are you?” the beagle girl said in a smug tone.

“My name? I suppose you can call me Slash.” Slash’s mind was becoming clear again.

“Slash? That is a weird name. But then you’re a pretty weird person. You recovered from whatever happened to you very quickly. Infact thanks to you I am out fifty bucks! Thanks a lot!” she snapped.

“Leave him alone Alice he has been injured, he needs compassion not irritation.” Another woman walked in, she appeared to be a cat. Her fur was a grey, ash like color, and she had long silver hair with even in a ponytail reached the floor. She appeared older then Alice. That is to say she appeared more mature and composed. She looked at Slash and gave him a warm smile.

“Yeah yeah whatever…” Alice leaned in close to Slash and whispered “Hey, be careful around her, he nickname is The Devils Cat”

“Alice my ears are burning.”

“What!? Um I was just telling him uhhhhhhh…” Alice’s blood ran cold.

“That you will be more then happy to get him anything he requires? How very kind of you Alice, you’re a very good pup. Now please leave up be.”

“Yes Angel… Yeah ok turtles boy… I mean Mr. Terrapin. If you need anything just let me know.” Alice gave both Slash and Angel a fake smile and departed. Angel walked up to the bedridden turtle, pulled up a chair and sat down.

“Well well well, what a cute visitor we have! You know green is my favorite color.” Angel cooed leaning in close.

“Er, Angel? Is that your name?” He quivered

“OHHHHHHHH and smart too, it must be my lucky day.” She purred leaning in a little closer with each word. Running her fingers along his chest.

“Hey HEY what do you think you’re doing!?” Slash cried.

“Just try to make you feel at home.” Angel placed her forehead against Slash’s and whispered “This is my home, and bed you know…” Slash’s face turned beet red.

Angel puckered her lips and began to “move in for the kill”. When the door burst open and Alice came in.

“Hey Angel we have… WHAT ARE YOU DOING!” she yelled.

“Hmmmm? Oh we are just playing Alice. Now, you were saying?”

“Uhhhh yeah… Listen the overlanders are being attacked by Robotnik! His swatbots appear to be carrying some kind of “Robotization guns! He is gaining ground fast!”

“Then I suppose we should go help them, yes?”

“HELP THEM! What for! We have been here for… I can’t even remember how long and they never even gave us the time of day. We told them this day would come, and here it is! I say Touch luck!”

Angel Scowled at Alice, and then smiled. She walked past Alice and stopped at the doorway. “We will help them because it is the right thing to do. Now get the others and get ready. We will leave shortly.” With that Alice left in a huff. Angel stood at the door for a moment and turned back toward Slash. “Don’t worry cutie, I will be back soon. Meow.” She winked and followed after Alice.

Meanwhile at the single city on Pepper Ilse, the P.I.S.F was engaged in battle against the seemingly endless SwatBots. Like insects for every one-defeated 2 more took its place. Unlike the humans who were joining the robot ranks with each passing minute. The PISF’s immediate response team’s numbers were dropping. Down to 7 soldiers. They pushed over a car to use as a shield and used their EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) rifles to quickly put down the bot. But mainly trying to hold their position until the core members arrived to try to push back the bots. Just then the streets began to rumble. Barreling down the street was a large long tank like vehicle with “Dooms Day” written on the side. The vehicle’s tires squealed when whoever was behind the wheel slammed on the breaks and turned the sideways making a makeshift barricade. Everything when quite. All eyes, human and robotic fell on the black behemoth. When suddenly a small compartment opened and a small round ball bounced out and rolled toward the rogue machines. It sat for a moment and then it flashed brightly and all the robots within 100 yards fell.

Again everything went quite.

“Hey you guys gonna open up or what?” No sooner did he call out did the back of the Dooms day open up 25 soldiers poured out each heavily armed. Almost instinctively they took positions around the area.

“Arhhhhhhhhh, you fools you just wasted a great deal of my time! Do you know how long it takes to build an army!” A raspy voice called them from above.

All the men and women turned their heads to the sky to see a large man in a flying pod. “Dr. Robotnik, I presume?” one of the soldiers called out.

“And you’re the PSIF? Heh, I heard you were the best, but your just like me, your machines do all the work.” Robotnik chuckled

“Yeah different is though, ours are better!”

“Oh really? Well let’s just see how good they are. Swat carriers! Descend and attack!” A loud roaring sound began to emanate from the sky; several large cargo ships fell to the ground below surrounding the human defenders. The hatches opened and hundreds of swatbots exited and began to fire on the brave men and woman. They tried to stand their ground but quickly began to drop like flies! Within second half of them had been robotisized! One of them, presumably the CO yelled “Retreat!” Not needing to hear it again they began to try to get back within the Dooms day. Only 5 made it. The door sealed behind then the swat bot stopped firing and began to shake the vehicle trying to get out the last of the resistance. This was their flaw.

Not far behind them the Pepper Island freedom fighters had gathered, although only 5 of them they were completely unnoticed. Even by Robotnik himself. These Swat bots had been programmed to attack humans exclusively; those that did see the Mobians ignored them. The FF looked at each other and smirked. Turning back to the Swat bot they charged into battle attacking them doing whatever they could to turn them to scrap.

“What!? What is going on down there!” Robotnik high above the action eyed the new targets. “Argh! I forgot about the freedom fighters here! Quickly my Swatbots attack!” He cried. But his commands fell on deaf ears. “NO! THEIR PROGRAMMING! I didn’t include the proper commands to have them attack Mobians! That is easily remedied… I will take over manually” Pressing a button on his console a keyboard appeared as well as a small satellite dish on the side of his Eggpod. In seconds Robotnik had taken over and the SwatBots stopped attacking the Dooms Day and turned to the Freedom Fighters. Quickly surrounding them their weapons began to power up. They watched in horror as the world around them slowed down to a crawl. Each gun flashed as it fired. All the swatbots fired at once on the group of helpless creatures. Alice closed her eyes and accepted her fate…

Nothing happened. Alice opened her eyes to see… A turtle? Standing before her was Slash, his hands raised they glowed slightly all around them was a glowing dome. None of the shots got through. Looking at Slash’s face he appeared in pain… He spoke and said.

“Now… It’s… My turn!” The light he was already giving off became brighter! The dome began to expand, and then it exploded in a brilliant light. Everyone had to shield his or her eyes from its wondrous golden light. When the light faded there was nothing left all the machines were destroyed nothing but there destroyed bodies laying where they once stood. And Slash… Who was lying on the ground, his breathing was labored but somehow he was alive… The freedom fighters surrounded him dumbfounded. They didn’t even notice the last of the PISF come up to them. One of them swallowing his pride finally spoke.

“You saved us… The city… Errr… Thank you.”

Angle turned to him and smiled. “Don’t thank us. Thank him.”

“Who is he anyway? We have never seen him with you furba… Err, Mobians before…”

“Slash… Slash Terrapin, and I bet his has quite a future before him…”

Chapter 2: Edge the Hedgehog

“Argh! Hedgehogs, foxes, echidnas, and now turtles!? ERR I am the greatest scientific genius on Mobius! BAH! Very well then, I will just have to proceed with Project: Metal Flesh ahead of schedule…” Dr. Robotnik returned to one of the main labs of Robotropolis in rage over his defeat on Pepper Ilse and to Slash Terrapin. “Metal, come here!” he bellowed. Out of the shadows the good doctor’s ultimate creation, Metal Sonic approached him. Reaching behind Metal’s left ear Robotnik pressed a hidden switch. This caused Metal’s head to open revealing his electronic brain. Turning to one of the rooms many consoles he began to enter various commands, one of them caused a compartment to open. Robotnik reached inside and pulled out a long Ethernet cable. Which he plugged into the port that was within Metal’s exposed circuits.

“What are you going to do to me master?” Metal asked

“I am going to make you into a real boy my Hyper Metal Sonic. All of Sonic’s life data is within your circuits. I am going to upload it as well as your programming into this super computer. Which will then begin cloning Sonic from the genetic data, finally your programming will by uploaded into its brain making the perfect adversary for our dear friend Sonic, muhahaha.” Robotnik chuckled.

Turning back to the computer he began to fiddle with the console and a large glass capsule dropped from the ceiling, empty, except for a strange green liquid.

“Being transfer!” he roared. Metal Sonic deactivated, and something began to stir within the capsule. A small spec appeared. No larger then the head of a pin. Slowly it got larger, it pulsated and with each pulse it grew slightly larger. Slowly it began to take a shape. Robotnik watched with glee until… Suddenly an alarm went off.

“Wha!? Whats happening?” Robotnik was caught by surprise. “What’s this! The cells, they’re mutating!” Robotnik began to frantically type on the console trying to correct the problem. Finally he initiated the cancel command. Everything in the lab shut down, only the emergency lights remained. A burst of smoke came from the capsule, the green fluid was gone, and it created the creature within. Cautiously Robotnik approached the capsule and looked inside. Although according to the computer it had failed the creature was a dead ringer for Sonic. Except, his head only had one big quill.

“Bah this will never do! I have had enough failure for one day. I am going to bed. Metal… METAL!” he yelled angrily. Metal’s reboot did not start, so Robotnik gave it a punch knocking his lifeless puppet to the ground. “Fine Ill dispose of this, this THING myself” He grabbed the creatures leg, and dragged it to the garbage shoot. Lifting him up he dropped him into down the shoot. “Good riddance…” Turning around he saw Metal Sonic had rebooted and stood before him. “Metal, about time you came too you bucket of bolts!”

“Be quiet…” Metal Murmured.

“What did you say?”

“I said, be quiet!” Metal spoke up.

“Metal HOW DARE you speak to your creator this way!”

“I am not your toy anymore! I am Metal Sonic, the REAL Sonic!” Metal reached into his head and pulled out a microchip… It was black and smoking slightly. Clearly it had been overloaded. He promptly crushed it in his cold metal hands. Dropping the broken pieces to the floor he reached out for Robotnik.

“Hey, what are you doing! Stay away from me!” Robotnik cried, just as the emergency lights, gave out…

Back down at the trash heap the creature Robotnik just “prematurely” threw out began to come to life. Standing up he stared into the sky; a single thought existed in his head. To get stronger, and the Master Emerald was the greatest power source on the planet. At least, that is what was his pounding in his head. He took his first steps, toward a place he had never been, but he knew was there, Angel Island. He began to smirk...

Chapter 3: Orphans

“Where am I? I feel like I am floating…” Slash opened his eyes and saw nothing but darkness around him. As he looked into the dark the ground beneath him began to glow with a strange light. It wasn’t natural nor was it manmade. The ethereal light started to fill the room in its light blue glow. With a light to guide his way Slash saw a path leading him deeper into this strange world. Without thinking he followed the path not knowing where he was going.

Eventually the trail stopped at a round pool of water that seemed to glow with the same ethereal light that guided him there. Slash just took this whole foreign world in, when he spotted something. Floating above him was what looked like a glass screen. But made of a liquid, it was clear, most likely it was water. It was like it was beckoning him to touch it. He began to reach up toward it…

“Please don’t touch that. It is very fragile.” A soft woman’s voice echoed around him.

“Who are you? Did you bring me here?” Slash inquired. Turning around he saw a figure of a woman in a long white dress. He couldn’t make out her face but she seemed familiar.

“Yes, I did. I am afraid I need your help.” She said

“I… I know you… But I have never met you before, who are you?”

“I can’t tell you that.” She sighed

“Then why should I trust you? I don’t know your name, or even what you look like. Heh, is your weight a big secret too?” Slash asked in an annoyed tone. His question only to be responded by the sound of the woman giggling.

“Yes I am afraid it is, but what woman’s weight isn’t a BIG SECRET? You may not know much about me, but I know everything about you, even things you yourself don’t remember.”

“You… You know about me being human?” Slash was dumbfounded; his mind riddled with questions.

“Yes I do. I know about your human parents, you childhood, your wife, and even the last time you had a really good steak.” Her tone had a hint of pity.

“Then, tell me who…” Slash paused trying to remain composed. “Who am I?”

The woman remained silent.

“Please! Tell me! I want to… I MUST know about my life! WHO AM I!” Slash demanded.

“THAT IS NOT IMPORTANT!” she snapped “Your life has changed! You are you, I am me, and they are they! The lives we lead… They are not defined by what we remember; they are defined by what we make of it. You have been given a great gift, do not throw it away just because you can’t remember a few people who have been dead for a few millennia’s!”

Slash began to quiver with anger at this strange woman’s arrogance. “Then why should I help you? Huh? HUH! I have nothing to gain, AND nothing to loss!”

“Don’t the needs of the entire planet out weight your selfish ambitions? I am not without compassion for your plight; you have had everything stripped away from you, your basic rights. I can only imagine how that must feel… If you help me, I promise your memories will be restored. Please, I need you to travel west to Angel Island. There is a snow-capped mountain there; there you will have to fight a blue hedgehog with one quill. He is trying to steal the Master Emerald, one of the greatest powers in the universe, if he gets it, Mobius may never recover from his carnage!” Her form began to fade and her voice echoed these final words. “Please, I am begging you. I know I choose well when I choose you!”

The blue light that filled the room became brighter and brighter, until it was unbearable. Slash closed his eyes in a vein attempt to shield them from the brilliant light. When he opened them, he saw he was back in the Freedom Fighters camp, the same cabin from before. Although he was adverse to just following the instructions just given to him, he felt compelled to obey! Slash motioned to get out of the bed when a sleeping Angel caught his eye. She was sitting in a chair next to his bed her head back sound asleep. Slash almost burst into laughter when he noticed her mouth was open and she was drooling slightly with a hint of a snore in each breath. Cautiously he got out of the bed and made his way slowly to the door. Slash realized just how early it was when he got outside, the sun had was just climbing over the hills of the island. It must have been early dawn. No one else was awake but he still slowly and carefully made his way to the Western shores so not too drawn attention.

The water was pounding the shores when Slash arrived at the beach, the sun had gotten up it sparkled in the clear water, and a new day had begun. He stood at the beach and watched the water for a moment thinking if making the journey was indeed the right choice. Slash decided… He charged the water and dove in. Almost on instinct Slash swam at mind boggling speeds toward a place he had never been. Suddenly he just stopped. Raising his head above the water, he looked for an island, that should have been there.

“What is this a joke? There is nothing here!” he exclaimed that is when it hit him. He hadn’t been in the water for very long, and yet it had become dark, and the sun was no longer reflecting off the water! Looking directly upward he got his answer. Angel Island was flying up above him!

“Okay, now THIS is a piece of information I could have used before I left…” Taking a deep breath Slash dove into the water and swam straight down as fast as he could. In seconds his oxygen in his lungs began to give out. He turned around and swam for the surface as quickly as he could. Gaining speed with each stroke. Just before he reached the surface; Slash focused some power into his hands and fired into the deep sea and like a rocket breaking the planet’s gravity burst forth, Slash ascended toward the floating isle. Reaching one of the many jagged rocks underneath Angle Island Slash grabbed one and hung on to it for dear life. Realizing what he had just done, Slash collected himself and began to climb his way up to the island. Fatigued and weakened, Slash reached the East End of Angel Island. He heaved his tired body upward onto the warm grass, and laid down, his legs still dangling off the edge of the island.

Gathering the little strength he had left Slash got up and took in his surroundings. The island was lush and green. Their seemed to be a habitat for every conceivable ecosystem! This island was as close to paradise as you could get. It didn’t take long to see where he needed to go. In the distance he saw an ancient altar, with a glow green light emanating from the top. With renewed vigor his goal in sight Slash charged forward. The day was passing quickly now, fearing he may be too late Slash picked up the pace. Reaching his destination Slash surveyed the base of the mountain, he found a large cave, the cave appeared to be man made as it lacked many features of a natural structure. The sides were clean and smooth, and a cold breeze was flowing through it. About half way through the cave Slash passed a fork continuing forward and he other branching off to a cold cave with a ladder leading to the mountain summit.

That must be where I will fight this hedgehog, but I should find that emerald first! He thought.

Slash continued through the cave, reaching the end he found it was dusk. His time had all but run out. Peering in the distance at the altar he saw 2 creatures standing around the glowing emerald. Slash was in awe at the size of it! It was almost as tall as he was! Reminding himself of his mission. Taking note of the 2 people near the emerald. One was red echidna and had long dreadlocks. The other… Was a blue hedgehog with one big quill.

“Heh, that’s my perp… But who is that other guy? Hope he is on my side…” Slash joked. Without a second thought he charged the altar.

“Sonic what are you doing!? I won’t hold back if you try to take the Master Emerald!” the guardian proclaimed. But the intruder didn’t respond he just stood there smiling maniacally. “Very well, you leave me no choice!”

The red echidna charged his enemy but stopped short feeling a strange power approaching. Seeing an opening the intruder made his move. He curled up into a ball and began to spin at sonic speed. Blasting forth he slammed the red echidna in the chest. Knocking him off the altar, and just missing Slash by mere inches! Slash stopped for a moment and looked back at the fallen warrior. Mumbling slightly, Slash carefully approached the red echidna. Slash gingerly tapped him with his left foot and said…

“Hey… Hey buddy you alright?” The echidna got up with a start and completely ignoring Slash he started climbing the stairs of the altar.

“Hold on there red, I am on your side!” Slash called out following right after him. The two reached the summit and watched in awe. The master emerald was pulsating as the blue hedgehog absorbed its energy! The emerald’s once radiant light started to become dull. All the energy taken, the emerald turn black as coal. Rising into the air, his body erupting with energy, the blue demon turned gold, and looking down upon the echidna and Slash he laughed insanely. He charged toward the ground and grabbed the emerald's guardian. And drove him into the dirt. He tried to get up, but the super charged monster slammed his foot onto his throat cutting off the echidna’s breathing! Just as things started to go black for the guardian the pressure was released! Slash tackled Edge getting him off the guardian, and the 2 struggled on the ground. Getting up quickly the guardian when up the altar and placed his hand on the Master Emerald. He began to mutter something but Slash was too engaged in his adversary to hear it.

It didn’t take long for Edge to break free. He flew up high and eyeing the guardian and the once again glowing emerald. Realizing the power was leaving him and returning to the emerald he turned tail and flew toward the snow topped mountain.

“What did you do!?” Slash just blurted out.

“As the guardian of the Master Emerald I can use its mystical powers in way other people can’t.” he replied.

“You didn’t answer my question…” Slash retorted in a sly tone.

“I called the energy back to the emerald. By now all the power he took is back in the emerald. Now you need to answer my question! Who are you? And what are you doing on my island?”

“My name is Slash, and other then saving your butt. I was sent here by some woman saying I needed to beat some hedgehog with a single quill, and you are?”

“I’m Knuckles. If you really are here to stop him then take the ladder back in the Ice cave.”

“What are you going to do?” Slash inquired.

“I need to stay here, he may come back to take the emeralds power again. I don’t know if I will have the strength to recover the emerald’s energy again.

Slash nodded, and returned to the ice cave. He looked up and saw nothing but a white sheet at the top of where ever it led. Grabbing the first rung, he climbed up the ladder reaching the cold summit. Looking on into the cold world before him Slash found the rogue hedgehog. He was kneeling in the snow, clearly weakened by his ordeal. Slash casually walked up to Edge. Standing next to him, Edge looked up at Slash…

“You take Edge’s power! Edge bury you in frozen water!” he called. Pulling his head back he began to scream loudly, and the whole mountain began to tremble. Slash looked around in panic turning around only to see a wave of snow moving toward him. On pure adrenaline Slash started to run down the mountain, but it was useless, in seconds he was washed into the avalanche, along with Edge. Slash blacked out.

He awoke sometime later Knuckles and a young bunny girl standing over him. Slash hadn’t seen the girl before. She was very young maybe 3 or 4 years old. Her fur was a beautiful white color, and she was wearing a brown winter coat. She was smiling gingerly at him, then turned to Knuckles and giggled. Knuckles reached out and helped Slash to his feet saying…

“You saved my life I repaid the debt.”

“Thanks for that… What about Edge?” Slash asked

“Was that his name? All I found were some foot prints in the snow. Most of the trail was covered up by the snow.”

“And the kid?” Slash knit his brow

“Her name is Snow she use to… Er, lives with her parents here on the island.” Knuckles replied watching his words. “Come on you 2 lets head back to the altar, Slash there is a Egg pod that Edge used to get to the island. Snow you will be staying with me for a while.” Knuckles continued. The three headed back Snow marching ahead happily.
“What happened to her parents?” Slash whispered

“I don’t know… Their cabin was on the mountain. I found Snow there buried under the snow. I… I don’t think her parents made it…” Knuckles replied quietly. Slash stopped. He was shocked.

“I… I killed them…” Slash’s voice quivered

“You caused the avalanche!?”

“No… No I didn’t but… I didn’t take my enemy seriously… Had I attacked him when I had the chance, maybe…” Slash paused “Hey Snow!”

Snow turned around. “Kid… Knuckles and I talked and, well, how would you like to stay with me for a little while?” Snow looked down and rubbed her foot in the ground.

“Is that okay Mr. Knuckles?” Snow said. Almost not hearing her Knuckles turned to Slash whispering. “What are you doing!?”

“I owe her, and her parents.” Slash gave a sad smile. Knuckles could see his sincerity.

“Yeah it is okay Snow. Just come back to visit okay?”

Snow’s face lit up, she had never been off Angel Island, and was giddy to the thought of it! She ran up and gave Slash a big hug. Slash picked her up and gave her a piggyback ride back to the altar. Knuckles led them to the Egg Pod. Waving good bye. The Slash and Snow took off toward their new home, and their new life...

Chapter 4: Ultimate Life Forms Clash: Shadow Vs. Slash!

We return now to Xera’s lab deep under Mobius. Xera is standing before a gateway within it is a swirling ball of golden light staying very attentive to the sounds of the machine. She watched with anticipation as the ball-changed shapes and size. Suddenly the ball began to shape a life form, that of a bipedal hedgehog. Now with shape it became black as night with stripes red as blood. The gateway became quiet, and shut down. The creature it had formed lay beneath it.

“Shadow the Hedgehog I presume…” Xera smirked.

The black hedgehog began to stir. His eyes shot open, and he leapt to his feet.

“Where am I? Who are you?” Shadow demanded.

“I am professor Xera, and I am the one who revived you, Shadow. Don’t you remember what happened?” Xera replied
“No… My mind… Its clouded, I can’t remember anything, except… I can see a girl… The 2 of us are running through a long hallway in fear. We… We reached some sort of control room, and someone entered he pulled out a gun, and… and… MARIA!” Shadow shook his head bringing him out of his memory. Xera grinned slightly.

“Yes I know… It was a terrible accident” Xera explained while Shadow listened intently. “Maria was the granddaughter of your creator Professor Gerald Robotnik. He was my colleague. I would like to apologize to you Shadow, for you see it was my creation Slash who murdered that girl, Maria. He then killed most of the crew on the space colony Ark where you were created. Finally he trapped you within your own power, Chaos Control. Thankfully I was able to escape, I knew if I could find you, you would be able to stop that monster while there was still time. I was able to construct this gateway, which would create a vibration similar to the one used to warp time and space with Chaos Control. Bringing you back to this world.”

“My memory is fragmented, how can I trust you? For all I know you were the murderer on the Ark.” Shadow accused.

“An excellent question, if what you say is true, why did I bother to help you?” the doctor reassured.

Shadow pondered this for a moment. “Very well. Where do I find him?” Shadow inquired.

“Pepper Isle, in the west.”

“I will destroy him for his crimes, however should I find out your lying I will kill you.” He murmured.

“Heh, very good Shadow, that mentality may just keep you alive. You will be needing this.” Xera tossed a green gem to Shadow

“A… Chaos Emerald…” Shadow whispered

“Correct, the very thing you were created to control. It will give you more then enough strength to avenge your friend.” She reassured.

In a flash of light, Shadow disappeared. “Like a game of chess…” she thought

Shadow reappeared in an alley on the south side of Pepper City. Shadow walked along the sidewalk watching the world pass around him. As though he was not part of it just an observer watching worker ants breaking their backs only to get stepped on by something greater then themselves. Coming to a crosswalk Shadow stopped for a moment and gazed at the metropolis around him. He then continued to walk forward into the street. People screamed and shouted out him. Some cursing him while others preyed for his safety.

Shadow stopped in the center of the road and closed his eyes. A red aura surrounded him and with a powerful crash…

“CHAOS BLAST!” He roared releasing a massive amount of energy in the center of the city. People scattered like so many marbles let loose on pavement.

“What was that big brother?” Snow asked. She now lived with Slash in what remained of the freedom fighters camp. All except Angel had left for the city now that they had become welcomed heroes among the humans.

Slash and Angel had since started building a home for Slash and Snow upon returning from Angel Island. In the meantime they stayed with the curious cat. Slash and Angel stopped their work and turned to the city seeming a cloud of black smoke rising toward the heavens.

“What happened a bomb?” Slash pondered

“No… No I think something is going happening…” Angel commented “We should go investigate.”

“It’s probably nothing… I am sure the proper authorities have it well in hand…” Slash reassured.

“Very well… Even if you’re right however they probably could use someone with your talents to help with the injured or missing. But then again I am thinking out loud. It’s not your fault if anyone dies…”

“… Curse you Angel…” Slash muttered. Slash dropped his tools and charged toward the source of the smoke.

“Hearts of gold are SO easy to manipulate…” Angel giggled.

By the time Slash reached the city all the main roads were deserted. Following the smell of fire and ash Slash discovered a large creator in the middle of the city.

“Heh, Angels loosing her touch… Looks like a bomb did go off…”

“No I am afraid it’s not that simple…” A dark voice echoed from all around him.

Slash turned around to see a black hedgehog standing behind him with a scowl on his face.

"My name is Shadow, I was created by the brilliant Professor Gerald Robotnik, I am the prototype of the ultimate life form. Would you happen to be Slash Terrapin?" The black hedgehog proclaimed.

"Yeah that’s me. Dr. Xera Rai created me to cleanse this planet of the Mobians. Although, I have chosen not too. What do you want?" Slash replied.

"I am here to destroy you." Shadow raised his left hand revealing a large green gem. "Chaos CONTROL!" he screamed disappearing into a burst of light.

"WHERE'ED HE GO!" Slash's eyes grew wide looking frantically for his dark adversary. It didn't take long. Shadow reappeared in another burst of light. Delivering a right hook to Slash's jaw! Slash recoiled falling to the ground. Recovering quickly without turning around Slash attempted to elbow Shadow in the chest. But he had already disappeared!

Reappearing high in the air Shadow's right hand began to glow with an orange light. "Chaos Spea... IMPOSSIBLE!" To Shadows horror Slash was right on top of him! Clinching his fists Slash slammed them down hard onto Shadows skull driving him into the concrete with great force!

Shadow picked himself up and shook off the attack. That’s when he realized. He lost his Chaos Emerald!

"Looking for this?" Slash called out. Shadow turned to him in awe. In his right hand he held Shadows green gem. "I call that Slash's touch." Casually tossing it aside. Slash raised both hands and beckoned to Shadow. "Come on. Fair fight..."

"Very Well." Shadow replied "This will be more entertaining then I thought."

Shadow rolled himself into a ball and spun at great speed. He shot forth toward Slash at the speed of sounds. Slash planted his feet best he could and threw his hands forward and caught the black ball. The power pushed him some 10 feet back, and the friction burned his hands. Slash threw his hands upward and launched Shadow’s balled formed into one of the cities buildings. Slash watched cautiously waiting for Shadow’s next attack.

Caught completely by surprise Shadow attacked from behind hitting Slash with the Rocket Accel. Slash landed on his shell and was dazed for a moment. Shadow stayed on the attack and charged toward his enemy. Coming to Slash used his foot to catch Shadow and throw him back. Using his hands as a springboard Slash shot up toward the sky and with pinpoint accuracy landed on Shadow driving them through the street into the sewers below.

“Your better then I thought… I can see how you beat me the first time…” Shadow commented.

“Wha?” Slash’s breathing had become heavily labored since the start of the battle.

“Don’t play with me. I know what you did to Maria! I will avenge her!” the black hedgehog accused.

“Sorry to burst your bubble pal, but I don’t know any Maria, and I have never seen nor fought you before!”

“LIAR!” Shadow continued his onslaught and leapt at Slash. Thinking quickly Slash jumped up and used Shadow as a stepping stone hoping off of him up to a ladder. Slash quickly climbed up it back to the open streets.

Exhausted Slash laid on the warm asphalt for a moment to recover some energy. No more then a second passed before Shadow break through the streets. Enraged Shadow started to run toward to Slash…

“STOP! Leave my big brother alone!” Snow cried for her fallen friend.

Angel had brought Snow to see if they could help with whatever had caused the accident in the city.

Shadows distraction became his downfall when he heard a faint voice mutter…

“You… Lose…”

Shadow turned to Slash to see the turtles left hand raised with a large energy ball in it. Slash smirked. Shadow’s eyes that had been filled with so much anger changed to fear. Blasting him, Shadows body flew high into the air like a rag doll, and crashed into the streets and stopped moving.

Angel carried Snow to her adopted brother. Tears filled her eyes seeing her brother in such pain.

“Don’t worry bout me… Heh, how’s Angry McRagepants over there…” Angel looked over toward Shadow but… His body was gone…

“The battles over it seems… But not the war…” Angel turned back to her downed friend. “It looks like you will have to fight him again Slash…”
