This is a review I simply keep forgetting to write. Luckily, Tails_FoxPrower; the new SSF Vulpine Librarian (moderator of this board), reminded me about it when he posted his book review. I was required to read this book as part of my CIS (Computer Information Systems, I think) 106 class in college and it was way cooler than I ever would've imagined. I'll give a brief summary of the story and try not to spoil anything for anyone who would like to read it for themselves.

There's this dude, he's an astronomer. He designs telescope optics and he enjoys that line of work. Unfortunately, when his grant money runs out he's transferred into a new line of work. He becomes a programmer at Lawrence Berkley Laboratory. Something he's not overly enthusiastic about. Still, he has enough knowledge of computers to do his job okay and before long he becomes a computer wizard without even realizing it. Good thing, too. He's the only person willing and able to stop a strange hacker from doing who knows what. Both our hero and our villainous hacker know exactly what they're doing, but the only problem is, they don't know what each other is doing. As our astronomer friend finds sneaky ways of watching the hacker undetected, he begins to wonder what the heck the dude is up to as he gets to the systems of a conspicuous Air Force base and checks out the info on some C.I.A. agents, all through Berkley's network ! It becomes apparent this ain't just some bored college student trying to fry somebody's system to get his kicks. This guy is up to something big ! Things only get weirder as the hacker uses the tactics of the clever Cuckoo bird to get to what he wants. This is based on a true story that took place sometime around the time I was born, I believe. If you love a good mystery, read it. If you love computers, read it. It's an awesome book that's written with amazing style by the hero of the story himself in the first-person perspective. I definitely recommend it. ;)

Well, I'll be taking a technology course next year. Could be the perfect time to read this one. I've read a few first person novels. Liked them. And of course, since it looks like nothing too major happened, I would imagine everything goes well in the book. xP

Heh yeah, but you'd be surprised. I imagine the event probably received quite a bit of publicity back when it happened. It's amazing the things the guy thinks of to track the hacker. His gets so occupied with him, it's like he's obsessed with the hunt or something. Like the captain in Moby Dick.
