Sigh. No matter how cool a computer may be, no computer can go long without doing something completely nutsy!! Ahem. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has had this type of problem before and/or know what the heck is going on and/or how to fix it. As most of you know, I am about as much of a PC gamer as I am a console and handheld gamer. Even my little brother and sister have some games that they play on my computer with super-dupervision. Most PC games have to have the CD-ROM disc in the drive in order to play, since otherwise you could install it on tons of people's computers and they wouldn't have to buy, but very few don't. My little sister's My Little Pony game (Lol yeah) is one of these. And of course, it's possible to download demos of games like the Escape from Monkey Island demo I recently downloaded. The difference I assume, is that most games run off the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive while these others are running completely on the computer's hard drive. So, here's my problem. When playing the above mentioned games that run completely on the computer's hard drive, my computer has developed a tendency to up and turn off completely! That's it, just poof! Gone. Allow me to quote Sonic from AOSTH like Tails_FoxPrower by saying "That's NO good!" It gets worse! If I try to turn it back on within the next minute or so (I haven't figured out exactly how long it takes for it to start working again yet) it tries to start back up, but then it just gives up and turns back off before it even feeds any information to the monitor to indicate that it's starting back up. My question of course is WHAT THE CRAP?!! 0_o  Is there something wrong with my hard drive? The computer doesn't seem like it's overheating or anything. I have no idea what's going on. :worried: |

Hmm. Now that's a toughie. Now, if it's anything like what happened to my compy over the summer, it could be using up too much RAM. Thing is, a game like that doesn't sound like it would need too much RAM to operate. Unless of course your compy is lacking in the RAM department, which can be ruled out from the fact that you use other PC games which are presumably more of RAM hogs than that game you mentioned. My best bet is a RAM usage spike and it takes away from the OS RAM usage and pretty much screwing the thing over. As for the recovery time, that's got me hanging. It could be one of a few things. Did you get the Escape from Monkey Island Demo off the net? Could be virus infected or something. My advice for any prelim compy trouble shooting is run all your antivirus and spyware programs. >_> |

I'm pretty sure I got it from the LucasArts website. It could be something to do with my RAM usage. I hadn't thought of that. That makes a lot of sense. Considering how many programs I always have running at the same time. Then running the game demo only adds to the RAM usage with all that other stuff still operating in the background or whatever. I usually have Xfire, Desktop Weather 4, HP Digital Imaging Monitor, AVG Control Center, and maybe even other stuff open in the taskbar. Maybe I'll try closing EVERYTHING and then seeing if I have that problem. Then ... whoa! That little alert about Windows Virtual Memory being too low just popped up as I was typing this. I forgot about that. I had seen it do that a few times ago a while back, too. So I guess that's probably the problem, huh? Just the same, it's still a good idea for me to run all my anti-virus and spyware software to be on the safe side. Thanks for the help, Tails_FoxPrower. :mario: |

No prob. That same window popped up a few times on my old compy when I was playing UT2k4 with the Internet going. xP I can do it without that coming up now, with my new compy. =3 |

Yeah, it used to pop up when I was playing The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth before I got a new graphics card. I hadn't seen it in a long time but now it's here again. So basically, my computer is multi-tasking to the extreme and it can't handle it, right? You think if I closed everything before I played a game it wouldn't do that? |

Yeah. And as long as you don't have Nortons, you shouldn't have too much trouble. If I'm wrong, well then, I guess it's time for research. xP |

Well, after further investigation I figured out the source of my PC gaming handicap is that my computer is overheating. :worried: It only does it when gaming since that's what takes the most out of the computer and it doesn't want to turn back on until it's cooled off. So, any more ideas of how the fix this problem? Hopefully a solution that doesn't involve the great spending of the moneys. > < |
