First of all, I must inform you all that this topic will be rather controvertial as it pertains to religion, specifically Christianity. If you don't know by now that I am, in fact, a Christian, then you really don't pay attention, do you (particularly to profiles and such)? As such, and as an administrator of this forum, I must inform you that in partaking in this discussion you consent to respect the beliefs of others and will do no such action that could cause there to be flaming in this discussion. Also, know that while I am normally about as mild-tempered as a person may come in most cases, I am actually very defensive about my beliefs. Certain things can set me off in such a way that I become a totally different person. A very stern, serious person. Believe it. That said, any that will acknowledge this and wish to partake in this discussion may (preferably those who share the same beliefs). Now then ... After watching the movie recently, I developed an interest in this series. I actually have not read the books and I was beginning to believe I might wish to eventually. I really liked hearing references to Christianity in the film and I thought I'd look further into it. Upon doing a search on Wikipedia, I learned some things that I liked and some things I wasn't so sure about. I learned that C. S. Lewis claimed his purpose to writing these books was to inspire an interest in the Bible and serving God in young children. I was quite impressed and gladdened at reading that. Then I kept reading about the symbolism in the story relating to things in Christianity, particularly concerning the lion, Aslan. How it was symbolic of Christ how he was humiliated, suffered, was killed, and then rose from the dead. I wasn't sure what I thought of that. Then came my final astonishment, I read that it was revealed in I think the third book that Aslan was actually intended to be a form of Christ. There was also a Deep Magic from the Dawn of Time and Deeper Magic from Before the Dawn of Time which seems to be referring to God, the Father and the Holy Spririt. Thus forming the Trinity. This is most evident in this quote from Aslan in the book after one of the children ask Aslan if he exists in their world. "I am... but there I have another name. You must learn to know me by that name. This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there." This clearly illustrates C. S. Lewis' intentions for writing the books. However, I'm just not sure if I agree with him doing it in that way. You can read more about it here. So, anyone else want to share their opinion on this matter and/or on the books themselves. |
