Yeah, I already had part two up, or some of it, but that was a loooooong time ago. This is now. And even then, my style's changed a bit from 5 weeks ago to now, and it's edited from the original version for great win. I'll try to edit and post at least a chapter a day. This one I based from a particular zone in Sonic 3. It got good reviews from my peers, but I'm still looking for some kind of criticism. So yah. HAVE AT IT. Posted Image Edit:// Okay, I admit. With all my reading and all my writing recently, I've had no time to edit my old work. People say it's fine as is. I guess I'll just post the whole thing, since it's been a long time coming. 1 The past several days were horrible for Tails. Everything he thought about Shippo changed when Illusian told him that Shippo was dead. Since, Tails couldn't get much good sleep. He knew he'd have to tell him sooner or later. Poor Shippo. He was always a special pokemon of sorts. He looked like a Ninetales, but only had one tail. His eyes were a brilliant green, and he somehow pulled off a look that shouted cute, but also seriousness. It's probably what happens when you're a thousand year old kid. Tails knew Shippo wouldn't like knowing he was among those who have been deep sixed, and he had things bad enough. But after the night before, when he showed that he was suffering delusions, Tails couldn't take it anymore. He was hostile even to Blizzard, a friend, and that wasn't Shippo at all. And he reminded Tails of his persistence with a fervent shake of his bed to wake him up. “Tails,” he called, “Get up. I want you to tell me what's on your mind.” His front paws were planted firm on the mattress (the bed itself was only two feet off the ground; specially made for Tails' stature) and he bounced up and down to wake up the slumbering boy. Like all kids, Tails didn't wake up right away. He sleepily said “Gimme five more minutes,” then rolled over. The five minutes had to be where Shippo wasn't. “No five minutes. Now.” So Tails woke up anyway deprived of whatever good five minutes of rest would do. Sitting up, he began to rub his eyes. “Shippo, why are you waking me up so early?” he asked. Shippo slinked off Tails' bed to give Tails room. He said, “I just want you to tell me what's on your mind.” Tails looked at the time on his digital clock on the nightstand. 12:30. PM. So it wasn't as early as it felt. But Tails always slept till one past noon nowadays. “Well...” Tails started. Did he really want to tell Shippo now? He didn't want to wait too long. Things would only get worse. “Well, you know I got my memory back, right Shippo?” Shippo didn't answer though. Baffled, Tails stared. Shippo stood as still as a statue, frozen in midstep. It looked like he was just about to walk somewhere to sit and listen, but time just stopped for him. “Shippo?” Tails scooted off his bed and stepped toward Shippo. He waved his hand in front of his face and got nothing as a reaction. Taking a paw of Shippo's from in the air, he tried to move it. He found it was frozen down to the muscle fibers. Either time stopped for Shippo, or time stopped for Tails. He checked the clock again. 12:31. No wait. 12:32. Time marched on just as fervently. “Shippo?” he tried calling again. But just like last time, he gave no answer. This left Tails with nothing. How would he even remedy this? How could he get Shippo to respond? He certainly couldn't think of a way. He's a mechanic, not a miracle worker. He didn't like leaving the little guy alone like that, but it wasn't like he was going anywhere. His stomach lead him to the kitchen. Maybe he was a young paranoid, but something in the back of his mind screamed something was horribly wrong. The only thing he could think of to shut it up was to get something down his throat. It wasn't this often he walked out of his room barefoot, though. Was he this worried? Maybe. At least it didn't wake the others up from their own rooms. Though, it was so late that they were going over strategy in the lobby. Invading the pantry like a little vagabond, he took a Pop Tart package and a warm Coke to chase it down while doing...something in his room. Upon arriving, Shippo was, in fact, still petrified. Intent on eyeballing his pokemon till Kingdom come if need be, he sat down on the bed and stared. A half hour came and went and Tails had downed the Coke and reduced the pastries to crumbs. Another half hour passed when Shippo finally attained a state of consciousness that allowed for movement. “Oooh...oww...” he moaned. Then he fell. Tails slid down from his bed and to Shippo's side. “Tails, what happened? All of a sudden everything just hurt.” “Yeah, and you've been standing in the same place for an hour.” Shippo showed clear disbelief. He flipped back onto his feet and just stared at Tails. “And I'm sorry, but now I can't hide the truth anymore.” Finally, the young fox Pokemon would get some answers. But the look in his eyes expected the worst. “Shippo, Illusian said you've been dead for all the time I've known you,” he glumly said. Shippo's expression didn't change; he was expecting it. “And what Blizz was talking about yesterday, that really happened.” Last night, Shippo was suffering some delusions. They were classic schizophrenic signs. Those illusions attacked him. Of course he wasn't hurt. Or not like now. But it was a blow to Shippo's pride, to fall to this kind of state. It wasn't freaking fair, Tails thought. Shippo had so much ahead of him...now this. “You...you're not lying, are you Tails?” Tails just shook his head as he stood. He had to leave. Now. Just like a brother would be hurt when his little brother is taken from him. He felt an empty hole open up. It wouldn't help matters if he broke down when Shippo was the one in trouble. “I'm sorry, Shippo. I wish I didn't have to tell you... I gotta leave... now.” Shippo watched Tails pack a book bag with some pokeballs and essentials hopelessly. Already it seemed as if Tails was getting ready to walk out of his life for good. He was dead and Tails was going to leave. It already sucked. And his stony front already burst from the rushing tears it was trying to hide. “You didn't have to tell me that, Tails.” Shippo deteriorated so fast that he was sobbing, and sobbing so hard that Tails could hardly understand a word. He wanted to comfort Shippo. But he didn't. After packing his things, he continued to the door and out of his room. “I'm gonna find a way to make you get better somehow,” he stubbornly said. “No matter how long it takes, I'm gonna find it. Goodbye, Shippo.” That farewell seemed too brief for him. He was better than that. But all that stuck in his mind was that this had to stop. Now. It stuck just like a note hung on a freezer door by a magnet. But was there anything he could do to ensure Shippo would be okay in his absence? Ransai was still in the medical room after his breakdown yesterday. When he got there, it was apparent that Ransai wasn't watching anything for him at the moment. Leave a message after the beep. And that's exactly what Tails did. He took a paper and pen from his pack and wrote. 'Hey Ransai, I hope you read this when you wake up. I'm gonna be gone for a while out looking for some orbs. I don't think that your losing control of the pendant is a coincidence. A few days ago, I set that orb I got from Christmas into place at Illusia, and things have just been going downhill ever since. Shippo's been dead all this time, and I guess anything related to Illusia at all is just going all wrong. I already told Shippo that he's been dead. As far as I know, he was still crying when I left. Just keep an eye on him, okay? And don't worry about me. And tell the others what I'm doing, too. I don't want to think I left them again. Wish me luck. Tails' He folded up the note and set it on the nightstand next to Ransai's bed. Looking at Ransai again, he felt all the more need to make haste. Even beneath his gray fur, Tails could tell he'd still be pale. He was still breathing, though. Perhaps still in shock. Illusions were a mighty burden on the mind. “Bye, Ransai,” he finally said. He left the med lab, and quickly departed from the building. He took Pidgeot's Pokeball out. Staring out into the horizon, that arid sky of the Orre desert, he wondered where one of those orbs would even be. It was a big world after all. And those orbs were tiny in comparison. He wouldn't find them by simply wandering. Hoping that flying would clear his head, he released his Pidgeot from the pokeball, climbed on and it flapped into the sky and away from the Snagem base in Ecclo Canyon. |

Where first? Soaring the sky should be soothing, but it was different when you're in search for something that will either help a friend big time or send them off to the other life. And with eight of these things to find, he had his work cut out for him. Were they all blue? Were they different colors like the Chaos Emeralds? He just wouldn't know until he found another. Pidgeot flew its southern course for a while until it came to the southern tip of Kanto. With all his thinking, Tails didn't even notice the cities fly by. For all he knew, an orb was resting in the ninja gym of Fuchsia or maybe it was some jewel shown off in the Silph building in Saffron. For all he knew, one could be mistaken as an egg on route 2 by a Pidgey. Didn't Illusian say something about any specific location? He recalled what him and that blue haired guy was saying about how they hold the souls of the other sages. They were found where Vulpix and Ninetales might be found in one point of time or another. That could narrow several places down. He'd have to rely on his memory of the times before Diaruga wiped the time lines. Long story and he didn't want to think of THAT now. Back when Tails still had that egg that held Shippo, he took it with him everywhere. He never let it out of his sight. It was cool looking though, he had to say. Its bronze color with blue flame patterns was soothing. In fact, a bunch of things that surrounded Illusia were soothing. Maybe it was a mind control thing. And that could be how the illusions associated with it were so strong. It was just conjecture. Then Tails realized that he wasn't trying to figure out Illusia. Just where those darn orbs were. That's the thing about being too smart for your own good. You abuse your ability to think and you go off on a silent tangent, often losing yourself in your own thoughts. But in the state this world is in, that would be a better alternative than some other fate. Wait. Speaking of that egg, there was a gray Ninetales that seemed to follow Tails wherever he went while he held it. He showed himself in some tower in Ecruteak and again at the summit of Mount Ember. And that was the same Ninetales that served under Illusian for who knew how long. Where would be the better choice? Tails came to a quick decision for once. “Pidgeot, I started my friendship with Shippo at Mount Ember. I want to start this search there too. I think it's on One Island. Let's go!” Pidgeot trilled its cry and sped up. If it weren't for Sonic, all these sonic booms during the flight would have blown Tails right off Pidgeot's back. But thankfully, Tails didn't fall into the ocean below. Like any professional flying pokemon rider, he kept low to Pidgeot's back and let the wind blow right over him while the feathers kept his nose warm. Five hundred feet isn't too high off the ground compared to other pokemon, but Tails didn't see much need to fly higher than that. One Island was approaching anyway. And boy, did he see a strange sight over the volcano. Normally, buildings don't fly in this world. They also don't float over mountains. But this one did. But from one look of its moss grown marble walls told him he knew more about this building than he knew. Instead, he knew it as the Sky Sanctuary. Why it was on this planet, he had no idea. But it had to be a sign. “Pidgeot, descend and fly full speed toward the mountain,” he cried. The sooner he arrived, the sooner he could search for answers. A few seconds later and after an unkempt makeover for his fur from the wind, Pidgeot finally settled on a scraggly bush at the base of the mountain as a perch. Tails stroked its feathers and recalled it to its pokeball. The resulting nothingness under Tails caused gravity to suck him into the bush below. After a gasp, he walked out of the bush with tiny little strands of green foliage sticking in his fur. Tails coughed, brushing the stuff off his fur. “I'm too intense,” he concluded. So Tails began his trek up the side of the mountain. He did realize he would have to search this whole mountain over if he was going to find anything, but that would be the price he'd have to pay for a friend. It wasn't much of a climb as much of a walk. The real rock climbing would happen higher up. He could fly then. But now he was on his hands and knees on the grass at the base, peering in some of the nooks and crannies of the rock formations. He didn't know if it could be found under anything. He crawled through the tall grass (That fully engulfed him, but the way), stood up in such a patch and even his head couldn't penetrate the canopy of grass. He waded through until his left foot stepped in something hot and bubbly. It made him go ouch in a loud way- through a loud yelp and jump- and that quickly withdraw his foot. But when he inspected his foot, it was still there, though tingly, and at the source was a Slugma. He winced, looked at his poor foot, then looked at the Slugma again. “How can you burn me and not the grass?” He asked. Bubbling noises didn't serve well as an answer, so Tails just fled before he got burnt again. It wasn't as bad as he first thought it'd be but he's been burned by Kitsune before, and she's trained too well for her own good. His foot would heal. The first level of the mountain base didn't offer any orbs and after a short flight and search through the grasses of the next layer of rock and grass, nothing else turned up. He had a decision to make from here on, though. He could take a detour into a cave that would go deeper into the mountain, or take the path that lead to the summit. He didn't know how dangerous the inside of the cave would be. It could be dark, could be flowing with magma... Walking the path to the summit was probably much easier, too. Little effort was needed and there was less of a work hazard. He didn't need tons of rocks falling onto him anyway. His body was too soft to take a single rock his size. The greenery parted with his feet as he finally ascended to the top of the mountain. It was bare rock shaded by the sanctuary above. And the shade made that orb's blue shine brighter. The orb was nested right in a pile of rocks near the edge of the pit at the center of the mountain. Tails didn't see too much problem in its present condition though. He also didn't expect there to be a sudden bout of seismic activity underneath his feet. “Ack! The volcano's still active? I'm outta here!” So he made a mad dash for the blue little orb instead. He wasn't about to lose it to a pool of lava. He was NOT losing Shippo's fate to die out like that. The shaking of the mountain didn't help his running much, either. By the time he had reached the orb and grabbed it up, the chunk of rock under him gave way and fell for the bubbling center of the mountain. But he was in control though. Startled, but in control. He may have yelped, but that didn't keep him from flying away. Having two tails can really help sometimes. While he flew away panting, he noticed there were four particularly large birds flying his way. And from behind him, from the pit in the center of Mount Ember cried a loud trill. Moltres rose from under the lava. It didn't look like it was too happy with Tails, either. It looked up to the sanctuary shielding them from the sun above, then at Tails again before spreading its wings. The lava below reacted quite violently from the flaring pinions. "I...I'm outta here," Tails prudently called as he flew away. And he could feel the sweltering heat from behind him as the lava from the volcano pillared behind him for the second time that he knew. When he looked back, Moltres was gone, likely hiding in the lava again. And Tails didn't think it needed the extra warmth. The sight of the flying building bewildered Tails while he finally turned around in midair. The lava below didn't melt a hole in the bottom. It only raised it higher. He couldn't watch too long, though. Never did Tails think the cries of the legendary birds could be so beautiful or awe inspiring. But those same cries warned him that he was being approached from behind. With a pillar of lava to his front and four powerful birds to his back, the only wise decision he could have made was dive into the canopy of trees below. Just like a fleet of jets, Ho-oh, Lugia, Articuno and Zapdos soared over him. The never broke their formation, even as the Moltres joined their ranks. The pillar of lava splashed down into the volcano once more and the sanctuary in the sky now hovered so high that it wasn't even blocking out the sun. Like a group of angels, the five birds ascended up to the building. They would likely make their new roost there. As he lay there on a tree, a few cogs began to work in Tails' head. If he could snag one of those, finding the orbs would be a lot easier. He'd have a reliable force in his roster. And he could protect himself and others like he would want to. His hand grabbed for Pidgeot's Pokeball. "It might be my only way...Pidgeot, take us to that building in the air," he called, throwing it into the air. He leaped from the shaky branch he was on and flew up and onto its back. "Just don't hate me for this...let's go," he told it. Pidgeot squawked in answer and began to soar up to that sanctuary. Tails had one orb safe in hand. He had to get the others. But he'd nab himself a bird, first. |

Tails didn't remember the wind being so turbulent around the Sky Sanctuary when he was there last. But now, Pidgeot was having a hard time even breaking into the airspace. As hard as it was flapping its wings, it was getting the spin around by the gusts surrounding that marble mammoth. "Pidgeot, fall back and attempt to pierce through at full speed," Tails called. Pidgeot chirped back, then leaned to the side. With a U-turn, it flew away from the building to make room for its aerial charge. After about ten seconds of flight, it changed its direction again and faced the building. "Now quick attack!" Pidgeot shot like an arrow from its position with a single flap of its wings. Tails hunkered down, clung tight. A sonic boom crashed over the area and Tails' belly felt like he left it floating in the air behind him. The two came in way too quickly. They cleared the wind, but Tails always had a problem with landing things. He panicked and recalled Pidgeot while he was still in the air. Leaving him moving at over a thousand miles per hour in the air. But. Tails ran around this place before. He stumbled over his feet when he landed, but after tumbling a few times, he was back on his feet and running down a thin, marble bridge. Wow, just like old times, Tails thought. You really never know when you'll visit a place again. Of course, he couldn't keep up with such a speed, and he slowed down to his slower subsonic speed. But by no means was he slow. His tails did most of the work. While he glided along a slope, he searched for any sign of those birds. Despite being clear and sunny, Tails couldn't find them just by looking. Maybe they were perching where they couldn't see him. Didn't matter. Right now, he could just relive an experience he had a few years ago, back when the first Eggman was causing trouble. He leaped over a pit of spikes and rode a half a spiked pendulum to its back swing. With another hop, he leaped and ran for a slim tower ahead. It was funny. Last time, there were badniks all over the place. This time, there's not a scrap of metal around. But running around freely like this was a good way to relive an old adventure. In fact, that uplifting feeling along with that spring beneath his feet propelled his spirits like he never thought they could be today. Flying up through the air in that tower, feeling weightless. But he neared the arc of his jump. Just because he felt good now didn't mean he couldn't seize his opportunity to make a good landing. That was speaking both physically and situationally. He guided his body with his tails, and he his feet met firmly on the floor. He took a breath, then turned and ran off down the next marble bridge. Only when he left the tower's shadow did he notice he wasn't alone. A shadow was cast over him that wouldn't leave him be. Tails felt a little too scared to look up. But the flapping of the wings told him enough. The shadow below him also told him that the neatness of the bird's feathers showed off what remarkable elegance it had even when enraged. When Tails finally worked the courage to look up, he saw the Ho-oh swooping down for him with its rainbow wings outstretched and talons ready to tear into him. He yelped and dived to the floor, covering his head with his hands and his body with his tails. Apart from a strong breeze that blew his tails around and the chilling feeling those talons came a little too close for comfort, he rose to his feet again. If that didn't cause him to wet himself, then he was doing pretty good now. But now he was staring down a mad legendary bird. The glare it gave Tails was enough to convey that he wasn't wanted here. When it spewed a white-hot wave of flame, that only strengthened that notion. But he wasn't ready to become the world's cutest french fry just yet. "Kitsune! I need some help here," he called, throwing her Pokeball out in front of him. Tails' Ninetales appeared just in time. Just as Tails was about to get cremated, she soaked up all the flames for him. And she whooped. Fire just made her feel alive. "That's a good way to meet the day," she cried. Now that her fire and spirits were up, things were looking down for the Ho-oh already. But wait, when did she start talking? Tails wouldn't ask yet. There was a battle to be fought, and a hard one at that. Ho-oh may be a legendary pokemon, but come on. This is Kitsune we're talking about here. "Kitsune, I'm glad you're feeling good. That Ho-oh doesn't seem to like me too much. Think you could take it?" Tails asked her. Kitsune stared at the bird. She sized it up real well. The odds seemed against her favor, but she was feeling unusually confident today. Maybe she knew what Tails was fighting for. Kitsune may as well have been a mother for both of them, after all. Her nine tails waved. The Ho-oh flapped its wings methodically, staring at Kitsune with the same content. They both seemed ready to tear each other a new hole. "I'm so glad it waited for me while I thought. I think I'll repay its kindness by beating it only half to death," she finally answered. “Good. Well, that fire's gotta be good for something. Kitsune, use a flamethrower!” Kitsune didn't need to answer verbally. The way the fire seemed to just shoot from her mouth as cleanly as any yell was answer enough. But the big bird wouldn't just up and take that. It flapped its wings once, whipped up a nice, strong wind and dispelled the fire just like that. That left Kitsune feeling a little choked up. And that lapse in an attack gave Ho-oh time to charge. It flapped its wings again, and along with another wind came a cloud of sharp star projectiles. Kitsune couldn't possibly have dodged all of them. And she only had the bridge to work with. Wait, just the bridge? Why just that? After Kitsune brushed off her wounds, Tails hopped onto her back and held on tight. “C'mon, this is the best way to do it!” he encouraged. “What about you, Tails?” Kitsune asked. “Don't worry, just go! And use a fire blast!” Kitsune bounded into action. She liked what Tails was thinking. It made the battle interesting, so hey. The sudden change in tactics kept the Ho-oh on its talons, at least. Now it was in pursuit of the two. And with a spinning platform approaching, Kitsune had the perfect change to launch an attack. “When I say, Kitsune...” She leaped from the bridge to the platform, and after having built a strong flame, waited for Tails' mark. “Now!” She let it loose right into the Ho-oh at close range when the platform spun her around. Despite the natural type disadvantage, it still sizzled like the bird it is. That, and it ticked it off even further. The Ho-oh squawked, but Tails couldn't tell the difference between its pain and its anger. In a fit of rage, the bird whipped up a fierce gust of wind and blew both Tails and Kitsune right from the platform. It was dizzying, and Tails couldn't tell where he was flying. He could remember flailing his arms and tails, but the sheer force of the gust disoriented him. He could only make out Kitsune's yell. He had a bad feeling concerning her safety. Then his head hit something hard. Tails never saw it coming. |

Falling...falling...racing in the sky, fighting another over position...jolted hard...going down... "...quite a bump..." Couldn't even fly...so numb... "Tell that to the cabin." It was all over...but someone caught him. "It's lucky it hit the ship. Else it'd be dead." The race wasn't lost yet...with some hard work, Tails could catch up. But that headache...he moaned and try to rub the side of his head, but he couldn't wrest his arms from his sides. Then he realized he wasn't flying the Wild Blue Yonder anymore. It was too bright to try to squint his eyes open though. "Did you really need to tie it up?" "You never know how Pokemon will react. 'Sides. Captain's orders." Pokemon? Where? They weren't mistaking Tails for a pokemon again, were they? "Oww...my head hurts..." he groggily said. As far as he knew, those voices were just a by-product from suddenly conking out. But he suddenly found himself sitting up after thoughts of his Ninetales invaded his mind. "Wait! Kitsune," he said as he turned his head to look around the deck. Deck? How far did he fly? The ocean wasn't too far from Mount Ember, but still... And who were these guys? One was clothed in a gray poncho and he wore some eyepatch like eyeglass over his left eye. Blond hair, looked habitually neat, with no trace of a beard on him. The other guy was a bit more scraggly. He wasn't hulking, but he didn't look weak, either. He wore generic pirate clothes, right down to the patches, and he had shaggy, brown hair and wore a red bandanna over his head. It seemed discernible whether or not the bandanna was an accessory or the hair. Either way, he was definite pirate material. ...And why were his hands tied behind his back? "So it finally wakes," the blond guy said. "Be you friend or foe? "I'm not an it," Tails protested. "I'm a boy. And I don't even know who you guys are." The guy paused in his answer as he rubbed his chin. "Ben, go bring the captain and tell him the living missile woke up." The gruff looking guy with the bandanna nodded. "Sure. Untie him though. He doesn't look like a threat." He didn't sound at all stupid, much as his looks would say. With that, he walked off toward the cabin. The blond watched as that Ben walked away, then looked back to Tails. "You sure know how to make a landing. Captain's been right livid since you crashed in." "Crashed in?" Tails echoed. "You heard me. Out of no where, you fall from the sky and make your own bed of the captain's shag carpet. You're just lucky this is an airship, or else the hight from any other fall would have killed you," the man explained while unbinding Tails' wrists from behind him. As soon as he was free, his right hand went to the throbbing pain that took residence in a bad knot on the right side of his head. That must have been what knocked him out. It was a miracle he wasn't seriously injured despite such a fall. His body did ache, but the pain in his head dwarfed the pain elsewhere. "Did you see any Ninetales fall with me?" Tails asked. He was already anxious to leave this airship. He had to find Kitsune. Easier said than done though. She was either at the sanctuary, dead from too high of a fall, or somehow made a lucky landing in the center of the volcano. Either way, he'd have a lot of searching to do. "No. Haven't seen any of these flying Ninetales you might have seen." Tails crossed his arms, up in a huff at that comment. Here he was worried about Kitsune, and this guy won't even keep serious. "Then take me to that big building in the sky. If I landed on this...airship..." Tails paused to think about that. An airship on this planet? When he stood up, it was clear that the sea was far under them, and there was no churning of the sea rocking under his feet. "Yeah...airship...if I landed here, then that means you must have seen it." A different voice answered. "Yeah. That's where we're headed." Tails turned around, a little startled. Another guy stood there beside Ben, wearing some expensive looking clothes. He was blond too, and his clothes matched his hair nicely. With black silk pants and and a blue and black shirt, he really did look like an upper class type. But he likely didn't have an upper class heritage. "Then could you take me there?" Tails asked the guy. The captain took out four pokeballs and the orb Tails only recently acquired. "He-" "Relax. It's just incentive. Help us out and you'll get your things back. Easy enough. But just to make sure you won't slow us down, you'll have to battle dear Benjamin." Tails clenched one of his fists, then took a breath. He only really knew the potential of Pidgeot. As for Fearow and Skarmory, he didn't know how well they could fight. And he couldn't use Suicune on this ship. "...What do you want me to help you with?" "You seen the legendary birds fly to that floatin' building? We're wanting ourselves some." So this guy was after what Tails was after. Tails couldn't really see too much harm in it. "I was after one, too. I don't care which one I get. But if you'd let me come along, I guess we could help each other out," he said, doing his best to be reasonable. "Arr," said the captain. It didn't sound like he naturally used the word. He just seemed like one of those people never to take anything serious and take advantage of any situation for a laugh or two. His voice didn't even fit one of a pirate's. His voice was more fitting for an aristocrat. Or at least an upper middle class citizen. "Like I said, you'll have to face Ben in a Pokemon battle if you'll want to do that." "Okay," Tails answered. The captain tossed Tails his pokeballs, but kept a hold on the blue orb. "I'll just keep a hold onto this until we're done. Fair enough?" "Okay, okay," Tails hastily said. He fumbled with the balls and almost dropped them. Thankfully he wasn't too clumsy grabbing them, and only had to bend down to grab one of the balls. "You sure this kid would actually know how to battle?" Ben asked. "You know these kids nowadays. More and more of them turn out as prodigies," the captain reminded. "I guess you're right. Hope he's useful," Ben said as he took a Pokeball out from his vest. "I have a name you know," Tails reminded. "It's Tails." "I'll deal with names when we reach our destination. Now battle," said the captain. "Fearow, go!" Ben shouted, throwing out his first pokeball. A nice looking Fearow burst from the ball. Its feathers shined nicely. At least there'd be some sort of fight in it. "Drill peck!" "Pidgeot, here we go! Aerial ace!" Tails answered while he tossed out his own. His main aerial force and favorite means of transport was just as ready for battle when it appeared. It gave no hesitation in kicking off the ground and taking up offensive maneuvers. Tails never really noticed how fast Pidgeot could go until he watched it fly hard into the stomach of the Fearow. Chirping cries came from both pokemon in the brief scuffle. But just like Rocky sliced through competition in the ring, there was little room for opponents in the sky for Tails' Pidgeot. When it came to its own weight division, though. After Pidgeot drove its beak into the Fearow's ribs, it took that lapse in reflex to fly under and over. While Fearow was busy stabbing at where Pidgeot used to be, Pidgeot took the liberty of putting the Fearow out of its misery with a forceful gust of wind. And now the Captain had a second hole in his galley to worry about. So much for having a rustic ship of wood. "All right, Pidgeot!" Tails cheered. "Oy, I think he is one of them prodigies," Ben said, disgruntled as he recalled his Fearow. He took out a second pokeball. "Let's try this! Mukkubird, go!" The pokemon that appeared when Ben tossed that ball out was one Tails never saw before. It was just like a creamy chocolate bird, only it moved, flew and everything. In fact, even its head looked like the topping of a soft serve chocolate ice cream cone. Tails had to get one of those sometime. "Let's show this kid a thing or two from home! Brave Bird, fly!" Tails didn't like the sound of that attack. He panicked and stuttered out, "Agility!" That Mukkubird or whatever it was was fast. It had almost all the get up and go of Pidgeot. Tails was surprised at how fast the two left the ground. And he never saw the kind of reckless formation that that Mukkubird used. When it connected with Pidgeot, the sound of of the collision was enough for Tails' ears. If it wasn't for agility and Pidgeot's velocity away from the opponent, that hit would have only hurt more. "Pidgeot, show it how it's done! Use a Wing attack! ...ow." Tails' head was still throbbing, and the battle wasn't making it any better. But that didn't douse Tails' mood. After Tails called for Pidgeot's attack, Ben didn't get the chance call out any sort of move for Mukkubird. Pidgeot disappeared right then. A split second later, a booming crash sent the Mukkubird upward. It was funny. With agility, Pidgeot could break the sound barrier instantaneously. That made it deadly. The sound of pained trills and batting of wings was the only evidence that Mukkubird was being assaulted. The raid only lasted a second. But the Mukkubird dropped hard. Pidgeot appeared in the air above Tails and slowly flapped down in front of him. It was obviously pleased with its performance. So was Tails. Ben didn't like it too much. "I...I...How the...I never seen a bird go so fast before," he stammered. "Boy, have you ever heard of a race called the Wild Blue Yonder?" the captain loftily asked. Tails nodded. "Yeah, I won that some time ago in the spring." "Ben, I don't think you'll have to swab the decks after this. Continue." "Easy for you to say," Ben commented as he recalled the brutalized Mukkubird. He took out one last pokeball and looked at it with a bit of remorse. He looked like he hated to send out a pokemon against something like Tails' Pidgeot. He didn't have a choice though. "Chatot, go on. At least try and take this one out! Fury attack!" Again, a Pokemon Tails has never seen before emerged from that Pokeball's red light. It was a small one, too, only a few inches short of two feet. What was probably the most curious about it was how its head was shaped like a note from a sheet of music, black feathers and a pink beak. The petal like feathers around its neck and the blue, green and yellow plumage completed the exotic look of the bird's attire. "Air cutter, Pidgeot! Make this one fast!" Tails encouraged his own. Now that he thought about it, Pidgeot looked rather plain compared to some of these new pokemon. Pidgeot raised its right wing as it watched the Chatot charge at it. With a swipe of that wing, it created both a sonic boom and devastating blade of air. If it were any more solid, it probably would have cut clean through the little parrot. Feathers flew everywhere. But it was determined, and despite a bad wound on its wing, it made a perch on Pidgeot's head and started to peck at it like any woodpecker could. "Hey! Pidgeot, hurry and use a quick attack into the mast's pole, then ascend before you hit it!" Tails called. "What? Chatot, keep it up and don't let go!" Ben answered. Too bad it wouldn't make a difference. Because that little bird wouldn't get off itself, Pidgeot was glad to make it get off its head. It began to speed along the ground, then just before it hit the wooden pole, it angled straight up. The sudden change in direction disoriented the bird so much, it couldn't possibly keep itself on Pidgeot's head at that speed. It fell. Then Pidgeot sharply turned around and delivered the charging attack to the Chatot, batting it straight for the deck. Another crash and another hole. Even Tails winced when it landed. Ben wasn't a happy camper at all. Like a kid who's hamster just died, he walked to the second hole in the deck - third in the ship - and recalled his final fallen flapper. Despite the collateral, the captain applauded. So did that blond haired guy. He impressed the stockings off both of them. "Remarkable performance," said the blond. "I can see you won't have any troubles when the going gets tough." "I was so owned," Ben lamented. "So we have some holes to mend, worry about it later Ben," the captain said and patted him on the back. "Boy. Tails. Come with me to the cabin. Matt, you too," the captain said, addressing both Tails and the blond. "Aye aye, our beloved captain," Matt said. He clearly was playing with sarcasm. That gave Tails the feeling that the title of captain was really loose, and that they all ran this thing for the fun of it. And maybe the captain was more skilled with the pokeball than the other two. "Right," Tails said. He recalled his staring Pidgeot and followed the two to the cabin. |

Wow. Tails really did make a dent in that shag carpeting in the cabin. But he was surprised it didn't suck anyone right in when they walked over it. The thought made him squirm in his chair. "Something wrong?" the captain asked. Tails quickly shook his head 'no.' "I see. At any rate, you certainly impressed me. I never expected a kid to have such a well trained pokemon. It speaks well of you," he said. Tails blushed vividly from the compliment. He may have been used to getting compliments from his friends, but from complete strangers it was another story. "Thanks." "Now let's get to business, shall we? I may be called the captain, but my name's Reeve. My first mate and my brother, Matt, took you out to the deck when after you kindly gave us a new sunroof." "It will be a rain roof and a water cabin if we don't get this fixed," Matt interrupted. "We can get repairs when we return to the home port. Anyway. The man you just battled is Ben, a long time friend of ours. If you're wondering, yes we do try to look like pirates, but we won't try to sound like them," Reeve explained. "It's all just a get-up. We're all loyal to a pokemon team called Team Ace, as corny as it may sound." He sighed. "Blame my wife for that," he added under his breath. "And after showing us your skill, we'd like you to help us round up the legendary pokemon of the Sky Sanctuary, as you call it," Matt continued. "We need some powerful stuff to help us make ends meet and with your help, Cap'n here thinks we can do it." "And to make it worth your while," Reeve spoke up, "We'll make sure you get one of your own in the haul. Not only that, but you'll get this...orb or whatever it is back," he said staring at the blue flame in the middle of the eerie sphere. "I bet it could fetch some sort of a price, but the birds would help us get a better trove. Whaddya say?" "Sure, I guess," Tails said. "I need that orb anyway. It's for a friend. This and seven others will either...well, either help him or kill him...but he's not doing too good anyway. So I'm desperate to get some help to find them anyway. I think the Lugia could help, since it's a psychic." "Fine. Deal is done. You scratch our back, we scratch yours, you get the picture. We were close enough to the place already, and if you fell from that like you told us, we'll be there in about..." "Land ho!" shouted one of the hands from the crow's nest. "See? Now let's go," Reeve said. He rose from behind his desk and walked out of the cabin. "Look forward to seeing how you take on the big birds," Matt said to Tails before he too left. "I guess there's strength in numbers," Tails said, staring out a window. "Five of them to three of us...And that Ho-oh's probably injured. I just hope you're okay, Kitsune...We're coming..." After a clang sounded from outside and the ship jerked to a stop, Tails slid down from the chair and exited the cabin. Round two with the birds. |

"What is up with this place?" Vincent asked. For the one who steered them into this, the guy behind the wheel sure didn't seem to know much about these old ruins. Yet he somehow steered through that hurricane of a barrier. He was as little a candidate for pirate of the year as Reeve and Matt. His black hair was tied back in a pony tail, and his plain white shirt, blue jeans didn't speak much for him. But apparently his redeeming quality was his skill at the helm of the ship. When Tails watched the ship somehow drift over and under the marble structures within the sanctuary, he knew some sort of genius was behind the wheel. "This place was built with ancient Echidnopolitan technology," Tails said to the three. "You know about this place?" Reeve asked. "Yeah, I was here once a few years ago back when I was back on my own planet," Tails answered. "I'll just take your word for it. From here we split up. We won't want to take too long if we want to make it back to port. I'm not into risking our fuel." "All right." "Aye." "Got it." "Okay." Vince, Matt, Ben and Tails agreed. Tails just wanted to get Lugia and get out. He knew he'd be hurrying. "And guys, be careful. This place isn't meant for humans. Use your flying pokemon to fly around, or you'll fall right through some of the bridges," Tails warned. "I'm probably the only one here who could actually run around safely." "And what makes you so special?" Matt inquired. All it took from Tails was to spin his tails into his rotor and start to hover up a few feet from the ground to quiet anyone's doubts. "Right. You'll be the only one to traverse the place without pokemon. Got it," Reeve said. Again, he was amazed. Then he sent out a Crobat , Vincent an Aerodactyl, Matt a Xatu and Ben sent out his Pidgeotto. Which he healed with a revive and several potions earlier. "When all signs of the legends halt, we meet back at the ship. Move out, and don't do anything too reckless." The four humans climbed onto their pokemon (Ben grabbed a hold of Pidgeotto's talons) and all took off at once, leaving Tails to take the ground path. "Gotta find Kitsune," he told himself. "I can take care of the birds when I come across them." After having wound his tails up, he took off in a shot. He was higher up than when he left off. That wouldn't do. So what did he do? He took a leap of faith from the side of the marble path. The draft blew him in all sorts of directions on the way down, and like he was a kite, the wind blew against his fur and face in force. For a few seconds during that roaring fall, Tails thought he jumped at the wrong area and was on his way down to earth. But one of the tell tale clouds of the Sky Sanctuary caught him. It was like he fell into a pit of cotton, only it was cool. Just out of his reach was a continuing path of marble. Wobbling a bit, he stood up and began to bounce. He never would attempt to explain how the cloud could support his weight, or how he could achieve upward momentum from a bunch of crystallized water vapor. But when it helped him out, he wouldn't complain. When he was firmly on the path, he started his run again. He lost too much time in dealing with those guys. It would be a miracle if Kitsune was still among the living. His chest was pounding, too. Being so nervous and now jumpy would probably eat at him. And that would hurt when he came across a legend. Jumping over spikes, across clouds, springing up through towers...it took a lot of running for a bird to finally find him. A wave of heat suddenly flew across the part of the bridge he was about to cross, followed by a roaring cry. Just like wax, the marble just melted away before him and the fiery body of Moltres came just feet away from him while it veered around. Tails would be finding out how his Fearow battled sooner than he thought. But now that he thought about it, he couldn't fight it too fairly. "Pidgeot, Fearow, come on out, you two!" he called while throwing his Pokeballs out. Fearow appeared first. The way its head was cocked, the way it stared down the Moltres, you'd think it didn't know what fear was. When Pidgeot appeared, Tails jumped onto its back. That made it fly into the air. "Fearow, fly with us!" Tails called. "Feeear!" If anything, the Fearow had an impressive wingspan. It was larger than Pidgeot's. And its beak looked like it could tear through that Moltres with little problem. "Pidgeot, try to work as well as you can with Fearow. I don't know how it battles yet, so just follow my lead," Tails said. Maybe it was because Tails' pokemon weren't attacking yet that Moltres didn't make its move yet. But as soon as Fearow and Pidgeot began to circle it, it got wary and fired a warning flamethrower at Tails. Pressing against Pidgeot's back, he had it descend to dodge it. But that heat radius...it turned the sky into an instant desert for a few seconds. "Now! Quick attack!" Pidgeot drew its wings in, then flapped hard when Tails lowered himself close to its back. He leaned to his left to steer it at Moltres. The hit came off well. After ramming the Moltres in the gut, Pidgeot flapped upward to give the Fearow room. It flew in with its wings spread wide. In front of it was a darker copy of it, and after the dark copy crashed into the Moltres, so did the Fearow. Moltres didn't give the two birds a chance to get too far. It flapped its flaming wings once and scorched the air surrounding it. Tails winced and squint his eyes shut. It felt like he was suddenly thrown into an oven, but before he could scream, it was over. ...That hurt. Tails took that as a reminder of what his own Pokemon went through daily. He looked at his arm and found his fur a little browner than it was. And Pidgeot was flying a little more erratically from that attack. That heat wave...now he knew what Kitsune was doing to all those Pokemon she fought. Yet she thought nothing of burning them. And she would even attack Tails to teach him a lesson. This was nothing compared to Kitsune. He coughed, then said, "Pidgeot, Air cutter!" After stopping in the air, Pidgeot flapped hard upward, creating several blasts of sharp wind. They cut the Moltres nicely, and prepared it for what treat Fearow had next: A nice, big hyper beam that shot the thing out of the sky. Two versus one. Maybe it wasn't fair But Tails couldn't take chances. He watched as the Moltres fall from the sanctuary and down to earth. It would survive. It was a legend after all. The others could scavenge it later. Now, Tails had to find Kitsune. She had to be here somewhere. Pidgeot let him down when it flapped onto the other side of the bridge the Moltres burned, then he returned both Pokemon to their pokeballs. Without any other hesitation, Tails tore off once again. |

It sure sucked being a fox in a den of angry birds. Now that one of their own was down, the other four were hot on his two tails. At first is was just the Articuno. Then the Ho-oh. Then the Zapdos joined the flock and then the Lugia. He knew that as soon as they fired any sort of attack, he was done for. He may have been fast, but that didn't mean he could keep running from those birds forever. He found the perfect place to hide in one of the towers coming up. They were big. He wasn't. He could lose them. Maybe. But the Ho-Oh started to chase him with a flamethrower. He could feel the heat from behind and that was enough incentive to coerce him into fanning his tails out and spinning. He was getting close. And that fire was getting closer. Just a bit more... He yelped as he leaped into his own sanctuary. The fire singed his left foot. First the Slugma from earlier, now this. What a ride. Holed up now in that tower, Tails was trapped like a rat. He didn't know about the other three, but the Ho-oh landed on the marble path outside. With its good position, it spewed its fire into the tower instead. Tails crawled close to the side of the door. "Shoot...now what?" he had to ask. He couldn't move. If he did, he'd be incinerated. Luckily, there wasn't smoke along with this fire. But it heated the inside of the tower efficiently enough. It quickly turned from a sauna to a furnace. And worse. But as tight as Tails balled himself away from the flames as they billowed through the tower, he couldn't escape that heat. If he didn't do something, he'd succumb quickly. A feeling of fright chilled through his body. He couldn't lose here. Not here. If only Kitsune was still with him... He was panting hard, and the sweat pouring from him by the time something finally attacked the Ho-Oh. It redirected its attention away from him and to whatever tossed rocks onto it. With a screech of its cry, it flew into battle. It was the perfect opportunity for him to flee. He laboriously rose to his feet, panting all the way. He leaned on the marble wall to wait for his second wind. But it wouldn't come. He took a deep breath as he slid down the wall. If he couldn't move now, he'd have to rest. But at the same time, he needed to find Kitsune. Pidgeot. He'd have to do it. Taking out his pokeball, he pressed that button in the middle to let it out. The bird appeared before him, staring into his big, blue eyes. It could tell he was a little hurt. It lowered its head and chirped. "Pidgeot, you need to go find Kitsune," Tails said. He rested a hand on its head to try to keep his own self sitting up. "Don't fight any of the birds and try to keep out of trouble. You gotta find her, Pidgeot...I'll be fine here...I think..." Pidgeot spread its wings out, then flapped up through the tower and flew out the upper doorway. But...that burning was worse than Kitsune's. It was torture instead of an attack. No matter how much he wanted to get up and run, all he could do was listen to the sound of two birds fighting outside, one with flames and the other with rocks. One of them hit the tower hard...The sound of marble crackling ripped through the tower and stung Tails' ears. If he didn't move, he'd be flattened by the collapse of the tower. The trampoline was right there in front of him. All he had to do was climb on and the spring action would do the rest. With another deep breath, he rose to his feet again. Another crash. "Whoa!" That hit almost knocked Tails off his feet and onto his butt again. Now he walked, even though his foot felt nonexistent now. He stepped onto the red spring trampoline. When it clicked, it sent him careening up through the tower again. And not a moment too soon. From under him, an Aerodactyl slammed the Ho-oh into the bottom of that spire. If he were just a few seconds hesitant, he would have been minced. Both birds squawked in pain, but that wasn't Tails' problem now. He leaned forward to the door he was flying up to, and fell flat at the landing. He was just a little startled. That was all. Now that he was laying on the cool marble of the doorway, the cool air blowing through his fur, he'd be up to speed in no time. For now, he would just rest. Tails watched the clouds drift by to ease his own mind. What with the fighting between birds, it was really hard to have a few winks without something nice to look at. The clouds did that for him. Flap, flap...it sounded like Pidgeot was back already. When Tails turned his head, he saw a pair of talons land with a click on the marble bridge. But they were thinner than a Pidgeot's. A cold wind blew. Before he knew it, he was on his feet and running away from the Articuno that had its sight set on him. Tails barely avoided being put on ice by a chilling Ice beam from the bird's beak. The birds didn't like him today at all. Only two pokemon were with him now. Fearow, and the Skarmory that only hatched a few days ago. He didn't know how they'd fare against an Ice type, much less a legendary ice type. And Suicune wasn't even an option...He was more worried about the his pokemon than the dangers of being attacked himself. But he couldn't just run. He was too tired to fly, and Fearow would just be shot down. If he could somehow survive and regroup... He was breathing hard, scared now. He was surprised he didn't wet himself there, either. Maybe he was growing up... maybe... Articuno was charging its ice laser again... It was only intolerably freezing for a moment. |

Something tickled through the numbness. "Tails!" It stopped when that something called the boy's name. Oh, how he wanted that feeling to come back. It was nice to feel something. He didn't even know how he got like this. There was a warmth washing over him. It was a bit wet, but at least he could feel it. It kept getting warmer...and warmer... Something gave way and he fell to his back on the ground. The sound of a flame died down, and Tails was shivering again. The nighttime air met his eyes when he opened them, and there was none of the sanctuary above him. He was at the tip-top of it. A Ninetales and Pidgeot were standing over him. Could it be? He sneezed before stuttering, "K-Kitsune?" "Get up, Tails. You're lucky we found you," she said. "Pidgeot freaked when it found a crumbled tower. I almost thought you were done for, since it said you were there when it left. We searched for hours for you and we find you up here standing as still as a statue. And when we flew over, here you are, frozen. We need to go. Now." "I've b-been searching for you, Kitsune," Tails answered. But he wasn't going to argue. "But...could you warm me up? Just a little more?" he asked. His fur wouldn't warm him up if the melted ice drenched it. "Fine, but we need to get outta here after this. Just say when," she said. She obliged him with a blast of warm air that blew when she spread her tails out. It was a tuned down version of a heat wave. All the cold just washed away. It felt so good...he was so stiff from being frozen. Pidgeot trilled off a song while it waited for Tails to get to his feet. Kitsune knew he wouldn't get up on his own. Silly kid. After a few minutes and no sign of the birds, she killed the warmth and grabbed Tails up by the ear with her teeth. "Yeow!" "I'll keep going when we get back, I just want you out of here." "I could take it," Tails argued. "Yeah, when you're not getting put out in every way possible," Kitsune added. ...Tails couldn't think of a comeback for that one. So he just complied and climbed onto Pidgeot's back. "Hold on, let me on first," Kitsune told him. "I'm the cannon, remember?" she reminded. Yeah, Tails still remembered her spectacular performance against the Suicune he had now. He climbed down again and let Kitsune hop on before he climbed onto first Pidgeot, then onto her back. He never noticed how warm her fur was. Perhaps being cold really made you appreciate the warmth of others. "Okay, Pidgeot. Take o-" Tails was interrupted by the cry of one of the bird pokemon. The shining feathers of Articuno flashed before the three before they could take off. It sang its call as it soared down to them. A bright light was shining from its beak. "Pidgeot, fly, now! Kitsune, intercept with a flamethrower!" Tails shouted. He didn't want to get his butt frozen again. Pidgeot quickly kicked into the air and to assure the Articuno didn't follow, Kitsune fired a hot line of flames at it. It went without saying she yelled every time she did that. It was either from the aggression, or maybe that's how bad it hurt when fire shot through your throat. Tails wouldn't have to find that out in his lifetime, fortunately. The flames cut through the Articuno's Ice beam and smoked it in the face. And thus began their flight from that horrid place. It was definitely better for the birds. But when Articuno started to follow, Tails got the feeling they were after him since he invaded their roost. His fault, and now he had to dig himself out of that hole. Which meant Kitsune and Pidgeot would end up doing most of the work. "Pidgeot, do a somersault to get behind it," he called. It was getting ready to fire another beam when Pidgeot ascended. It tried chasing them around with the beam, but Pidgeot was too fast. It was behind the 'Cuno and Kitsune was ready for some deep fried bird. "Okay Kitsune, you use Fire Blast now!" "Roger!" Kitsune charged her own attack now, and fired it from her mouth. It exploded above the Articuno, and didn't seem to have been aimed well. "Keep the Pidgeot steady, Tails!" "I can't help it!" When another cry echoed through the area, Tails feared the worst. And he feared his fears came true just to spite him. That Ho-oh from earlier burst from the clouds below and almost rammed into Pidgeot if not for Tails' quick steering. "Ah! There's two of them now!" Tails protested. These predators always came out at night when things were darkest and where no one wanted to answer a scream. "I know, just focus! If you're a pilot, just think of it as another dog fight," Kitsune encouraged. "...Yeah...I'll do my best...All systems, full power!" he cried. Okay, so Pokemon weren't systems. Scientists and pilots just happened to be subject to force of habit, and since Tails was often behind the wheel of a biplane... you get the picture. In front of them was Ho-oh and behind was Articuno now. Tails leaned back to have Pidgeot ascend. They ascended with him. "Pidgeot, ram the Ho-oh with an Aerial ace," Tails said. Pidgeot quickly flapped twice and sped right into the phoenix of a pokemon. "Now, Confuse ray, Kitsune! Whaa!" The Articuno just fired with another Ice Beam. Luckily, it hit more of Kitsune's tails than it did of Pidgeot's tailfeathers. "Bah, I hate the cold. Here's that Confuse ray, Tails!" The night just got a little darker, and a rainbow light engulfed the Ho-oh. After a pop, it disappeared as soon as it came on. Now the Ho-oh might as well have been a drunk pilot. It even crowed like a drunk. So Ho-oh was as good as useless for the time being. That gave the three time to take out the Articuno. "Pidgeot, I need you to use agility! Kitsune, you keep a flamethrower ready," Tails ordered next. Pidgeot sped into action as prescribed. Kitsune inhaled deeply. Tails had to focus more on flying, now that he set off the equivalent of the boosters. They came up on Articuno fast, and it didn't look like its reactions wouldn't help it. "Now!" With a yell, Kitsune let the Articuno have it with a blazing stream of fire. Articuno just screamed bloody Mary. Kitsune got it right in the chest. The sounds of its flapping failed; it sank beneath the clouds without any further struggle. Thank goodness for type advantages. "All right! Kitsune, turn around," Tails shouted. He was on a roll, or at least he felt like it. Leaning, he steered Pidgeot around and set it on a course for the Ho-oh again. It was still fluttering about without too much of a care. It made a good target like this. "Okay, we have to get it good while it's down, guys," he told Kitsune and Pidgeot. "I don't know how weak it is from earlier, but I know you hit it pretty hard...If we can get it to use another fire attack, you can suck it right up Kitsune," he said. "Leave it to me. Make Pidgeot close some ground." "Speed up, Pidgeot," Tails said. He nudged his foot into Pidgeot's back and it flapped forth for him. A few seconds and Kitsune let them know she was in range. In fact, they were flying right beside the Ho-oh, with it to the sanctuary again. It looked like it was flying in its sleep. "Wow, good job, Kitsune," Tails said. "Just watch this." The Ninetales took a breath and blasted the Ho-oh in the face with a bunch of fire. That incited quite the squawky yell from Ho-oh, and it returned fire. Kitsune was a little wobbly at first, but she stood up to ensure that Pidgeot didn't take too much heat. As for Tails, she thought he could still use all sorts of toughening up. "Yeow! Hot!" Tails protested. "You don't know what you're missing," Kitsune cheerily rebuked. Being close to her ensured Tails both got a good dose of the burn, but it didn't mean he'd get totally fried. The fire merely kept to Kitsune's fur and was absorbed. Either way, it hurt like heck. "Warn me the next time you do that, Kitsune!" Tails shouted, waving his burning arms about. "Remind me." The Ho-oh shot Kitsune a glare, but that didn't faze her. And it didn't faze her newfound strength any one bit. With force and authority, she blasted a round of fire that engulfed Ho-oh entirely. It was enough to drive Pidgeot away from it, and the clouds under the Ho-oh dissipated. It didn't go out, either. Just like the Articuno before it, the Ho-oh sank down beneath the clouds. Ah, to take out three legendary pokemon in one day. It sure is an ego booster. It was for Kitsune at least. "How's that for making your own phoenix?!" she yelled into the night. Tails, however, didn't answer that. He was holding onto Kitsune tight. "Kitsune, sit down so we don't fall off," he meekly said. "Fine, be that way," Kitsune said as she sat down on Pidgeot's back again. With a third legend out of the picture for now, Tails thought it safe to flee. To where, he didn't know though. He still had people to look for. Reeve still had that orb. He wasn't going to let that sky pirate make off with it so easily. But it'd be hard to find him or his men tonight. That's when an idea struck. "Kitsune, we're gonna find a pokemon center and spend the night there," he announced. "Why not just go back to the HQ building?" "Because. There's some guys I need to find. I met them after we got separated. And now they have something that's meant for Shippo," he briefly explained. "Then just south of Mount Ember's One Island. There should be one there. It's a city after all." "Yeah. C'mon, Pidgeot. Let's go get some rest. To One Island." "Pijio!" Pidgeot cried as it flew away with them. It didn't even take a minute later for it to touch down in front of the Pokemon Center of one Island. Tails was thoroughly chilled from the night air and now his sensitive skin from the burn. Sleeping tonight would either come easy or not at all. He took out a few pokeballs. "Return, Pidgeot," he said, recalling it to its ball. He looked at Kitsune and she stared back. "What?" "...Nah, you can come with me. Let's go in." Even if Tails loved the sky, it felt good to have his feet on solid land. Where he didn't have to balance at every waking moment. And birds more powerful than what he was used to. Yeah, now that he was at sea level, he couldn't complain much. He walked from the dark night outside, with the damp coolness radiating from the tropical grass and dirt to the sterile inside of the Pokemon Center with the door ringing to a shut behind him - and almost on his tail. Every time a door closed, he always checked on his two tails. A two tailed kid could never be too careful. "Greetings," said the nurse from behind the counter. "How may I help you tonight?" Tails yawned. "Could I stay here tonight? I'm too tired to fly all the way back home," he said. It was clearly a lie, but that redheaded girl didn't pick up on it. "Of course. All the pokemon centers I've seen offer free lodging for trainers. I'd ask if you're even a trainer, but that Ninetales is yours, correct?" she asked. Tails nodded, and Kitsune said "Ninetales." Apparently Kitsune wanted to keep a lower profile. Talking pokemon aren't common, you know. "You know, I've never seen something like you before," the nurse said, staring. She was smiling brightly. This was likely another person that thought Tails cute. "It's a long story," Tails said with a chuckle and rubbing the back of his head. "I'm just a fox kid from another planet, but that's the only weird thing about me, I think." "Another planet?" Tails nodded. "It's over a thousand years in the fut- ow! Kitsune," Tails whined. She just nipped one of his fingers. Apparently she was ready for bed. "Ahh...I'm just gonna go to bed now, okay?" "I see... Well, go on ahead and have a nice night..." she confusedly said "Let's go, Kitsune." The Nurse (known as Joy in and around areas of Kanto, Hoenn, Jhoto and other foreign regions, and can be assumed every other Pokemon Center nurse has the same name) waved Tails to the door that read 'Trainer Rest Area.' Tails was at first surprised to see a few other trainers asleep in here. It was a small island. But it was a pokemon center. And maybe these people had reasons just as dynamic as his for sleeping in a strange place and so far from home. He chose an isolated bed and walked over. He pressed on the mattress with his hands to see how soft it was and it gave way pleasantly. The comforter proved to be soft, but not too itchy. When he found it to be of his satisfaction, he slid his shoes off. He gratefully climbed in and under the covers. Kitsune layed down at the bedside. The pillow wasn't too soft, but it wasn't hard, either. Just cushy. It was perfect, he thought. He hated pillows that went flat, but hated sleeping on rocks as well. Already, sleep was gripping him. "Goodnight...Kit...su..." he murmured as he drifted. The alpha waves had already dragged him under the current of wakeness and into the depths of sleep. It was much more soothing there. |

Tails and Kitsune got up early the next morning. But they didn't leave the pokemon center. There was a good place to watch the volcano and the sky sanctuary from inside. Kitsune climbed halfway up the sofa Tails climbed on to keep watch. "Good morning," said Nurse Joy from behind him, "Is there anything I could do for you?" she asked. Tails shook his head. "Nah, I'm just waiting for someone to come back," he answered, though he didn't look away from the window. "Okay. I hope whoever you're waiting for comes around," she politely replied. "Thank you." Nurse Joy bowed, then walked back to the front of the Pokemon center. A half a hour passed. "You sure they'll be coming back?" Kitsune asked. Tails nodded. "Positive." "How will you even know they'll be here?" she prodded. Tails waited for a few minutes to answer that one. When the clock struck half past ten, what Tails was waiting for did in fact arrive. An airship sailed in from the eastern skies, far out in the horizon. Just as Tails thought, they were sailing toward the sanctuary. "See that flying ship?" Tails asked. "That's them." "Uh-huh. C'mon, Kitsune." He and Kitsune hopped down from the couch and dashed though the pokemon center and out the door. "We hope to serve you again!" Nurse Joy called after them as they ran out the door. "Thanks!" Tails yelled back. Like the prop lights on a set, the sun was burning brightly on the island. If Tails weren't on his way to extort some treasure, he'd much rather hang out for a while. But if he waited too long, those pirate guys would be too hard to find in the sanctuary. Quickly, he grabbed Pidgeot's pokeball (It seems no one will figure out where he keeps those things) and called it out. Before it could even get a grasp of where it was, Kitsune, then Tails leaped onto its back. "C'mon, Pidgeot, we got an airship to raid!" he almost cheerfully said. "Pidgeo!" Pidgeot loved the enthusiasm. It kicked off into the air and flew off in the direction of the sanctuary and the ship. The trees, valleys and sea passed by in a flash under them, and they approached the ship rapidly. He knew that coming on so strong would make them appear like an opponent force, but he cared more for the orb than he did those Ace Pirates. He could see Reeve, Ben, Matt and Vincent run onto the galley. Tails thought they were wondering what was about to attack. He almost couldn't wait to see their reactions when he showed up. Tails quickly predicted the trajectory at which he and Kitsune would fall if he recalled Pidgeot, where he'd need to be to land on the galley and waited for that right moment. "Return, Pidgeot!" "Tails!" The two fell from the sky, and just as he predicted he and Kitsune landed right in the center of the galley, just in front of the mast. He turned to face the four. "Well, well, the fox boy survived yesterday," Reeve said. "And here we thought the birds got the better of him." "Yeah. But I still want that orb back," Tails answered. "But what of our deal?" Reeve asked, faking a hurt tone. "I've had enough of those birds. I had to take out the Ho-oh and Articuno last night in an air battle and before that, my Pidgeot and Fearow took out the Moltres," Tails explained. "I think they got you good last night, and now you're back to try again, huh?" Reeve and the others were silent. That kid actually defeated three legendary birds on his own? If he did, they he was already out of their league. But... They still had to fight for their honor. Since when do 'pirates' back down from a challenge? Reeve knew it would amount to it anyway. "You read us like a book, good job," he finally said. "Battling legendaries..." Vincent said, amazed. "It looks like we underestimated him," Matt commented. "I was the one who had to lose to him," Ben bitterly added. "...Well, there's three of us that haven't battled you. Let's see...if you can beat the rest of us, we'll give you back your precious orb. We'd rather go through that then have your Pidgeot have a free reign with our ship," Reeve admitted. "Oh," Kitsune said, breaking her silence. "What's keeping me from just burning your ship down here and now? All this wood would have no problem spreading so much fire." "We'd ask that you don't," Matt answered. "This thing's all that's letting us keep our own lives in order and giving us a chance to keep our village from dying off. So we have less than good deeds under our belt, we have to feed the women and children." "Kitsune," Tails addressed. He didn't know if they were lying, but...he didn't want to be responsible for kids and wives dying. "Don't. Let's just fight them." "Fine. That means I get to burn up their pokemon instead," she cheerily replied. "Vincent, Matt, show that kid how guys like us battle," Reeve ordered. "Aye, aye!" the two said in unison. They took out a pokeball apiece. Matt said, "Nothing personal, but I can't just throw the match because you happened to beat some legendaries." "Strength in numbers," Vincent optimistically said. The two yelled "Go!" and out came a larger version of a Yanma. Maybe it was an evolved form of it. Its wings and tail were longer, its eyes were compounded and it had mandibles unlike Yanma. The other pokemon looked like an evolved form of Gligar. It had more teeth, its claws looked harder and its wings looked like the batty cape of the B-movie vampire. Looked like a tough fight. Tails tossed a pokeball of his own out to assist Kitsune. "Skarmory, go!" Tails' small Skarmory blasted out of its ball and curiously began to peck around at the ship. Kitsune nudged it with her head, then pointed it over to the opposition. "Nine. Ninetales nai." "Skar!" "Use Blade Test on that Ninetales, Glion!" Vincent yelled. "And Megayanma, follow up with Air Cutter!" "Kitsune, take out the bug first with a fire blast! Skarmory, use...umm...Wait for Kitsune, then use a Repeat attack on that Megayanma!" cried Tails. Kitsune, thankfully, was the fastest of the pokemon in battle, and while Megayanma was still trying whip up a few blades of sharp air at her, it was bombed with a blast of fire. But she was tackled by the Glion and it slashed at her hard while she was pinned down. That actually scared Tails. "Kitsune, fight!" he yelled. She kicked it off her, and it flew back to its own position next to Megayanma. The dragonfly pokemon was still trying to recover from that heat, so Skarmory took that chance to fly into it. It connected with its beak against the bug's head and incapacitated it quite handily. It rolled across the deck and stopped at Matt's feet. "Not even a chance," he sighed as he recalled the squashed bug. "Next! Xatu! Psychic on that Ninetales!" "Glion, keep it up with your Blade Test! Same Ninetales!" Vincent ordered. "Change of plans, guys," Tails said, "Kitsune, you know Sunny day, right?" he asked. She nodded, of course. She used that same maneuver to take out the Suicune. "Then use that. Skarmory, I think you can use Blade Test too! Try that on Xatu!" Kitsune almost never howled. But in order to strengthen the sun, that's what she had to do. Flames streamed from her mouth and seemed to climb into the sky to join with the sun. While she was doing that, both the Xatu and the Glion attacked. Kitsune almost buckled down when the psychic blast hit. But maybe from the sole virtue of of that blast that Glion couldn't attack her. The blast deflected it. It looked like these pirates needed to learn some teamwork. Skarmory squawked and took flight again. Its target this time was Xatu, and after watching the Glion, emulated that attack by slicing the Xatu up with its wings. Despite Skarmory's inexperience, the cross-cutting bladed wings almost overwhelmed the bird and knocked it down. But while Skarmory retreated to Kitsune's side, it rose up again just like an inflatable punch dummy. "Kitsune, are you all right?" Tails asked, worried. That psychic attack was powerful. "Yeah...thankfully some people don't know how to plan," she answered, glaring at Vincent and Matt. Vincent just brushed his black hair from in front of his eyes, and Matt mockingly bowed. "Then keep going, Kitsune. Use Flamethrower on Glion. Skarmory, try to take out the Xatu with another Blade Test." With the sun burning with the intensity of a thousand...suns now, Tails figured the next few attacks from Kitsune would hurt. If she survived. "Glion, get that Ninetales before it can get you! Cross Poison!" Vincent called. "And Xatu, try to stop that Skarmory with Night Shade!" Matt added. Tails knew that when Kitsune yelled, it meant the flaming that would commence would hurt. Glion succumbed fast to the flames. It didn't even have the chance to flap around like a bat with its head bitten off. "Gack! Return before you burn up the ship, Glion!" Vincent shouted, recalling the burning scorpio to the pokeball. Matt found himself returning his pokemon as well when Skarmory found its wings slicing into the sides of the Xatu. It didn't get back up after that. "All right, guys! Kitsune, can you keep going?" Tails asked. "Yeah...I ain't going down yet..." she panted. Vincent and Matt took out new pokeballs. "Aerodactyl, it's your turn Use Wing Attack on the Ninetales!" Vincent shouted, tossing his pokeball out. "And Golbat, you're all I got left Sludge bomb that Ninetales!" Matt yelled. You could tell he was getting desperate because he threw his pokeball like it was a baseball. Tails quickly assessed that Aerodactyl would be more trouble than it was worth. He'd have Skarmory take that on. Hopefully Kitsune could knock Matt out of the battle. Two against one would be so much easier. "Skarmory, you'll have to use Steel Wing! Kitsune, get another flamethrower through!" Tails called. Golbat fired the ball of sludge disturbingly quickly, but Kitsune shot her flames deftly at it. It intercepted it and the sludge exploded, kicking it up a notch. BAM! The flames were almost as if they were solid when they struck the bat. It was blasted back and came to a dead stop at the rail of the ship. But Kitsune finally was knocked out when that Aerodactyl batted her back with its rocky wings. It was fast, furious, and flew back in front of Vincent when it was done. "Kitsune! Oooh....you did your best...return," Tails said as he called his fox pokemon back. He watched Skarmory slammed its hard wings into the Aerodactyl's chest. Even if it was small, Skarmory's wings packed a devastating punch against rocks. While it was thrown back, it was able to recover quickly. Skarmory fell back before it could retaliate. "Looks like you lost your big gun, kid," Vincent said. "Yeah, and now it's two against one," Tails replied with a smart grin. He tossed out another Pokeball. "Pidgeot, it's your turn! Steel wing! You too, Skarmory!" "...I haven't got a chance," Vincent said. Pidgeot shot for Aerodactyl once it appeared from its pokeball. Its wings started to glow, and it smashed right into the big old pterodactyl. If that wasn't bad enough, Skarmory zoomed right past Pidgeot to add insult to injury with its own rock cutting wings. Vincent hastily recalled the falling Aerodactyl before it made another gaping hole in the galley. "Yeah, yeah. You're tough," said Vincent, begrudgingly. He tossed out another Pokeballl. "Go on, Swellow. Aerial ace," he said. Tails thought it would be best if he put the guy out of his misery now. "Pidgeot, Skarmory, both of you use Brave Bird!" he shouted. Pidgeot experienced that attack first hand, and Skarmory would likely follow Pidgeot's example. Pidgeot kicked off into the air and ascended high with Skarmory riding on the draft. After gaining enough altitude, Pidgeot changed direction and dive bombed the Swellow. Swellow was trying to keep up, but even Skarmory could fly faster than it, solely from the draft of Pidgeot. The three birds collided head on, and Swellow was unconscious before it crashed onto the galley. Vincent facepalmed as he recalled the beaten bird. "His three took our six, Vince," Matt said. "I can see that," Vincent answered. "I told you last night you guys wouldn't beat him, but you didn't listen," Ben said, shaking his hairy head. He didn't want to watch anymore. He retreated to the cabin. Reeve, however, applauded. "Vincent, Matthew, you can go to the control room while Tails and I have our battle." The two shrugged, then did as they were told, walking out of sight. "It's not often we see such strong pokemon," Reeve told Tails. "Can't you just give me the orb and I can go home?" Tails asked. "If only it were that easy," Reeve said, taking out two of his Pokeballs. "But a pirate has to uphold his honor, even if he knows he'll lose." "People and their honor," Tails sighed. "Let us see how your Pidgeot handles mine! Ace, Crobat, go!" Mirroring Tails' own Pidgeot, Reeve's Pidgeot appeared before Tails' at Reeve's right side. Tails' left. It stood just as taciturn as Tails', wings straight at its side and eyes staring and piercing into the opponent's. Beside it appeared the ever fluttering Crobat. Its four wings assured great agility. Thankfully, its poison wouldn't have an affect on Skarmory at least. "Pidgeot, show that other Pidgeot who's the real deal! Agility! Skarmory, use Steel Wing on Crobat!" Tails called out. "Ace, you use Agility, too! Crobat, focus on that Skarmory for now! Air Slash!" The two Pidgeots seemed to be exact replicas of each other. They both spread their wings, they both crowed at a high pitch into the sky. Tails could tell right now that Pidgeot would have fun with this. Crobat thrust its four wings forward to create a vortex that seemed more like a beam at Skarmory. It was a steel type, but it wasn't as free from harm as others. It hasn't seen enough battle. But it persevered and answered with a vicious attack with its hard, sharp wings. The answer left a mark. "Now, Pidgeot," Tails said, thinking. What would be the best attack to use now? "Pidgeot, use Aerial ace on Reeve's Pidgeot. Skarmory, keep it up and use Sky attack on Crobat." "Crobat, let the two birds have their fun. Use a Hyper beam on Skarmory! Ace, answer Tails' Pidgeot with an Aerial ace of your own!" Reeve commanded. Both of the Pidgeots disappeared on the spot. Their battle would be so tense that even Skarmory and Crobat would watch. Or try to. Their battle could only be heard. The sounds of feathery bashing and light boned bodies colliding filled the air for two good seconds. Both Pidgeot reappeared in midair. One of them had thrust its body beak first into the other's chest. They both fell to the ground, but one got up. Reeve and Tails were tense. Whose was it? The victorious Pidgeot flew into the air...and flapped back to Skarmory's side and trilled a beautiful, but boastful song. "All right, Pidgeot!" Tails cheered, pumping one of his arms into the air. Evidently, he did something right before Diaruga tied up time. "...Pity," Reeve said, recalling his own Pidgeot. Thankfully, his wasn't bleeding. But it would certainly need to rest up. He tossed out another Pokeball to reveal a Togetic. Meanwhile, Skarmory and Crobat realized that they were still in the middle of their own battle. They glared at each other to make up for their lack of animosity, then Crobat inhaled, causing an ear wrecking screech that brought Tails to his knees. "Ack! ...ahh..." These were the times where his acute hearing hurt more than it helped. Stupid supersonic waves. The bat screeched again as it unleashed a debilitating beam of energy at Skarmory. The resulting explosion sounded like it would take Skarmory down immediately. ...Which it did. When the smoke cleared, Skarmory was laying still on the ground. It got nailed where it hurt. "Yeow...You did good, Skarmory. Come on back," Tails said, recalling it to its pokeball. Taking his two remaining pokeballs out, he thought about using Suicune. But...he didn't want to wreck the ship. "Fearow, you're out next!" he called, tossing one of them out. "You use Drill Peck on Togetic! Pidgeot, try using Air Slash on Crobat!" "Togetic, use Metronome!" Reeve called. As much as he would have liked to have Crobat attack too, it was on the ground resting off the beam it just fired. Pidgeot stretched its wings out again, and this time it slashed with them to create a few sharp blades with the wind to hurl at Crobat. Crobat was lucky it was on the ground. That attack knocked it out handily and blew it back all the way to the cabin. Reeve sighed and recalled it. Now Fearow got to have some fun with the Togetic. It lifted into the air and dive bombed like a screwdriver at the Togetic. A pained scream was what Togetic answered with. It winced and whined. Apparently, having a long beaked bird spear you with its beak hurt a lot. But after looking at Reeve, it dried up and began to wave its arms around rhythmically. It lit spontaneously on fire and charged at the Fearow. The flames did more damage than the charge did. Like it was just hit by a flaming pillow, it jumped back and quickly ruffled its own feathers to cool off. "Okay, that's two down," Tails noted while Reeve returned the Crobat to its pokeball. "I can see that," Reeve reminded. He plucked another Pokeball out of his pocket. "Altaria, you need to pick up where Crobat left off! Dragon Dance! Togetic, I'll need you to use Water Pulse on that Pidgeot," he called as he threw the ball out. Tails would have never have thought that he'd have two cuter pokemon with him. But one part of being a trainer of flying pokemon meant using any and all of them, no matter how they looked. Tails needed some variety of his own. So Altaria wouldn't be a threat this turn. Tails didn't want his pokemon to end up confused, so... "Pidgeot, Fearow, both of you use Aerial ace on Togetic!" But maybe that wasn't too necessary. After that hyper beam, Tails forgot that Pidgeot was still destructively fast. Pidgeot disappeared, then Togetic disappeared after it was struck by Pidgeot. And poor Togetic, Pidgeot played volleyball with it and it yelled "Ti! Tick Ti!" all the while before Pidgeot spiked the poor thing to the ground. After Fearow's assault earlier, the pain simply overcame it. Even if it was still conscious, it wouldn't want to get up after that beating. "Tiii..." it murmured. Disappointed, Reeve recalled that pokemon as well. That was it. Altaria was all he had left. Just like a frightened kid, Altaria panicked while it danced. It didn't want that to happen to it. Faster and faster, it danced until it finally bowed. Then it found itself victim to an agile slice from Fearow's beak. It cut into the bird's cottony down and left a nice gash that would take a day or so to grow over. Fearow kicked back and away from the Altaria, and when it flapped to a landing before Tails, it stared. "Reeve, can we quit now?" Tails asked. "I don't want to have to hurt pokemon just for your own pride," he said. Pidgeot trilled in agreement. Even Fearow crowed. "You're so idealistic," Reeve remarked. "Just like many kids I've seen..." He reached into his vest and pulled out that blue, flaming orb. "But idealism won't cut it in this world. That's why everyone fights." He tossed the orb to a surprised Tails who stared at it when he caught it, then he looked back at Reeve. "Now show my crew what fighting's all about." Tails stared into the orb, then looked to his pokemon again. "Pidgeot...Altaria...you heard him." Author's note: This was a section with quite a bit of battle because at the time of doing this, a kind of 'mission' for the RP, there were a certain number of battles required. Personally, I've always found them boring and that excess amounts should go die somewhere. I hope this hasn't scared anyone away. (: |
