I'm a bit in my cups at the moment.
Apparently a lot of Wiis are getting bricked from the latest update. Ouch.

The latest update also kills the Homebrew Channel for anyone who may be using it.

Oh man, I updated already. I haven't had that problem but I think the disc channel and shop channel have been slower to boot up. I hope they fix this problem soon.

System Menu 4.2 updates boot2 to boot2v4. Now, whereas in most updates the software updated consists of IOS, default channels, and the menu itself, 4.2 is updating the bootloader.

This was, in my opinion, irresponsible of Nintendo.

boot2 is part of the bootloader; the first thing the Wii loads is boot0, which loads boot1, which loads boot2. boot2 loads the System Menu.

If there is the slightest error during installation of the new version of boot2, the Wii will have a corrupt bootloader. There is little that can be done to save it short of directly reprogramming the NAND, because the Wii crashes before it can load any software. This include's Nintendo's repair disc(s). Basically, you'll probably get a new console if you send yours in after it bricks installing 4.2.

Furthermore, the code used to update boot2 is spotty. At the very least, before putting something like this out, the boot2 update code should have been reworked so that it would be less likely to fail- and, better yet, so that it would have a failsafe of some sort.

Essentially, bricks are because Nintendo updated the bootloader, which is something that should be left alone, with poor update code.

It's rather more complex, really, but this is simplified so that anyone who needs to can understand.

Nintendo should reimburse any purchased titles lost through these bricks, and cover the replacement for free.

This was posted on the tech support forums but was deleted.

Apparently this happened because Nintendo really wants to stop people from using homebrew stuff and piracy.

I think you might be safe, Bermuda, at least to an extent. From what I just gathered, you'll know if your Wii was bricked as you're getting the update, so those who have the update installed already is on the safe side, it seems. Still, if the system is booting up slower than usual now, perhaps you did suffer some sort of side-effect from the update itself. I'm also hoping that Nintendo finds a way to resolve this issue soon.

It's now hitting me that this update ended up punishing people who didn't use homebrew or anything like that. People who do use it would never update right away, they would wait for a workaround. People who don't use it would update right away because they don't have to worry about that.

Huh.

This is a pretty unfortunate situation all around. I have the homebrew channel, but I decided to go ahead and update anyway(I don't do anything illegal on it. . .save for Mother 3, but that's neither here nor there) and if I ever decided to import a game or had the urge to texture hack there'd probably be a fix out already(darn those pesky pirates and hackers). And luckily I haven't had any problems, I tried my SD card, loading a game, now I should probably try the shop channel.

From what I've gathered, like Madman said, it seems if you updated successfully, without the Wii freezing up during the download or anything, you're fine. Just a guess though.

I'm still fine, though I've backed up as much save data to my SD card as I could just in case.

Right, I've never used homebrew so I dove right in to get the update and fortunately didn't have any problems with it. As for backing up data, it's really lame that you can't make backups of any games that use WiFi for anything. That means that I can't backup nearly half of my Wii game saves but I do try to keep a copy of the ones that I can anyways.

I was actually watching TV while my Wii was updating, but it didn't seem to have any problems. It restarted just fine after the update. I haven't tried to do anything since, though.

Unfortunately, I can't really back anything up since I don't have any blank SD cards lying around. <_<
