Yeah they didn't create it or anything(soley at least). So if Nintendo were to add blu ray to their console they could just opt to go with another manufacturer for the disc drive. |

Actually sony owns the proprietary rights to Blu Ray, If Microsoft and ninty make a Blu Ray system they will have to play Sony royalties. |

Yes I realize that Blu-ray is just a standard disc format now like DVD (which was started by Toshiba), but Blu-ray was created by Sony so I figured they might get some kind of proceeds or have a patent or something. Basically in order for another company to make a Blu-ray player they have to pay Sony for the usage rights, I'm just not exactly sure how that all works.

I don't see the need to fully move to blu ray, yet. I don't see many development houses taking full advantage of the format. Especially not Nintendo (I could see Microsoft doing blu ray with their next unit). If it ever comes to that, I would be willing to bet it won't be in Nintendo's next system. (Assuming something new doesn't come out before then.) |

I agree. I've watched a few blu ray movies at a friend's house, and I've honestly never noticed a difference between them and DVDs. So until there actually is a significant advantages or prices become equal to that of DVDs I don't feel nor want the need to completely convert. Although this is strictly in terms of movies, I don't really have much experience when it comes to blu ray and gaming, but if nothing huge has come from movies I don't want it in my gaming either until its really needed. The biggest advantage for Blu Ray and video games is the space on the disc, dual layered blu ray discs hold about 50 gigs. That could hold a lot of content for a game, remember the rumor for the Sonic Blu Ray Collection? Putting all the sonic games on 1 disc would only work on blu ray. However like I said before I see few development houses using all that space. Really only companies like Square or Epic that are making big RPG's or big FPS games. I really don't see Nintendo needing that much space... |
