Yay release dates! Of those I really only care about Kirby and DKC. I'll keep an eye on Wii Party and see how it turns out, as well as a few more of those listed in the press release. What the heck is FlingSmash?

A budget title that makes use of WiiMotion+.

If you watch this video, you'll see that the title itself pretty much explains the rest :P.

I'm a bit in my cups at the moment.
Metroid history narrated by Samus

The video has a GCI remake of SM's final boss battle.

I still don't know about Other M...it certainly doesn't help that it seems like they're pretending Prime didn't happen...

I just don't like the emphasis on story and characters. I don't like Samus talking and interacting with people. One of the reasons I loved Prime was because she didn't talk, you had the option of having the story told to you through lore scattered around the world, and it was just Samus, Pirates, and the local wildlife.

Yeah I know it's weird that I still loved Fusion. And I'll probably end up loving Other M since I almost always love games I doubted at first.

So far Metroid: Other M is receiving fairly mixed reviews ranging from 6.25 to 9. I read the full review from GoNintendo which gave it a 7.2. Not that I pay much attention to review scores, but I am interested in the points they bring up. For those who don't want to read those reviews, I'll fill you in somewhat. Most of them seem to agree that Samus' character was horribly done and that the cut scenes made up too much of the game, were not well acted, and the story made little sense. Another complaint is the focus on action rather than exploration and the lack of that feeling of isolation you usually have in Metroid games. They almost make it sound somewhat linear and say it deviates from the Metroid formula far too much.

However, the controls, from their simplicity to the way you switch from third person to first person were complimented as being very well done in what I read and the game is pretty fun even if it doesn't feel much like a Metroid game at times. They say the music is well done, which was pretty obvious from the beginning and I'm sure there's some memorable remixes and great new songs as well. It even has some kind of post-game mission to provide more replay value beyond tracking down the rest of the items.

Maybe I didn't pay much attention to the reviews of the Prime games since I wasn't into Metroid at the time, but it's interesting that while the original Metroid creators were somewhat detached from those games and ignore that they ever happened in the "main series," those turned out to be awesome games, some of the best in the series. So then they team up with Team Ninja and supposedly were working very close with them in developing this perfect Metroid game and there seem to be a good many people already with seriously mixes opinions of it. I just find it weird, but whatever. It's early and I'm not my usually positive self.

Anyway, I still fully intend to pick the game up Tuesday (or Wednesday, whenever GameStop gets it, release dates confuse me) and for those that may wait I'll give you my impressions on it.

I'm REALLY not sure about this after reading Go Nintendo's review. One of the reasons I like silent protagonists is because it's basically impossible to ruin them. I had the feeling that would happen when they decided to develop Samus. And I heard that the controls weren't so great.

I guess I'll still pick this up cheap at some point, so I can actually get a proper opinion of it.

So I've been playing the game. There's are a lot of cut scenes. Long ones. Also flashbacks. They're pretty cool and once they finally stop they do leave you on your own for a while to get a little bit of the Metroid feeling of solitude, only Adam is watching everything you do. You pretty much fight your way to survive to each save stations which also serves as a navigation and energy restoring station, and these are pretty common. You can restore your stock of missiles at any time through quick concentration (hold the Wii remote straight up and hold A for a few seconds). This kind of defeats the purpose of having so many missile expansions in my opinion since you rarely need to shoot more than three missiles at a time. Missile expansions only add one missile to your maximum, anyway. If you health is low enough (I think it has to be 20 or less before you get the first E-Recovery Tank, 40 after you get the first one) you can restore one full energy tank through concentration (two once you get the first E-Recovery Tank). There are energy tanks that add 99 energy to your health as well as energy parts that you have to collect four of to complete an energy tank (in other words, heart pieces). The other pick-up item is Accel Charge which decreases the time needed to fully charge your arm cannon. So to summarize, the pick-up items are Energy Tank, Energy Part, E-Recovery Tank, Missile Expansion, and Accel Charge. Everything else is a weapon you've already aquired prior to the game's beginning, but are waiting for authorization to use. So when the morph ball bombs, ice beam, speed booster, etc. become necessary to continue through the game, Adam will authorize them and there you go. I was very confused at first with the acquisition of the Varia suit upgrade. In every other Metroid game there has been no need to travel hazardous areas before you get the Varia, but sure enough, in this game you have to travel through them to a certain point before the Varia function is activated. However, the hazardous areas (AKA really hot places) don't cause your health to plummet near as fast as in previous Metroid games.

The game is really fun, though I've gotten lost several times as in previous Metroid games. It really is a different experience in some way, but it still feels like a Metroid game in others. The controls work well enough and I can't really think of any complaints. The Galactic Federation squad of soldiers that are investigating the Bottleship with you are pretty cool. The voices are cool and the acting is pretty good except for Samus I've got to admit. It's like the voice actress is trying to convey Samus supressing her emotions and yet she sounds emotionless when you should be able to pick up on some emotions in her voice and sounds like she is trying to convey emotions when she shouldn't be. It's kind of hard to explain. It wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't trying to narrate over half the game. There are several areas that force you to walk around very slowly with no other control. From what I can tell it's when there's supposed to be something scary around the corner and it's trying to build up suspense, but it sometimes comes across as annoying. There's certain instances that force you into the first person view when you're supposed to be looking for something to examine but it gives you absolutely no indication of what that thing is. So you might be frustratingly stuck in first person view trying to figure that out as I was. My only other gripe is that it doesn't come close to the level of interaction Metroid Prime 3: Corruption had. I've got to say Metroid Prime 3 is my favorite Metroid game or at least tied for favorite with Super Metroid. After starting the game it was obvious you wouldn't be able to interact with practically everything like in the Prime games (in regards to scanning and whatnot) but I at least expected you to be able to talk to the GF soldiers when not in a cut scene to get a little bit more information or at least find out what they're doing when you see them at a computer console or rummaging through some papers. Talking to NPCs is pretty standard, but oh well.

The structure of the game is a lot like Metroid Fusion in some ways, so if you liked Metroid Fusion and don't mind a little more emphasis on story and action in Metroid, you'll probably love the game. I'll have more once I get farther.
