Wow that seems awfully complicated to fix a simple bug. I'm surprised they didn't do a system update like they did with Wii Sports Resort's glitch.

There's advantages ad disadvantages to allowing patches, this is one of the glowing advantages.
What are the disadvantages?

Lessens QA because some devs thinks that they can just patch it later on. Also not just patching, but allowing changes to be made to games later on(such as DLC) lets games come out that aren't even done yet and make you pay to see the end. Such as Prince of Persia on Xbox 360 and PS3. Thankfully this doesn't happen too often, but it still unfortunately does.

I'm fine with the first point because I'd rather them be able to fix bugs than have the game remained bugged forever.

Also, NOA is doing this as well

Honestly, the more I learn about the game, the less I want it. I still kind of want to play it so I can legitimately complain with everyone else...

Its like having a spot on your body thats sensitive and playing the game is like having someone punch you in that spot over and over again. I was tempted to write nintendo a letter about the game, saying. "Try again, but don't embarrass yourself this time." But worded nicer.

You could just give me $50 and I could sit you in front of some god awful teen drama shows and you would get the same effect.
