I've noticed at the last few Free Comic Book Days some new comic book series arising based on Disney and Pixar movies and shows. All of these were fairly current franchises that Disney haven't finished milking yet if ya know what I mean. These were done by Boom! Studios who I haven't heard much about. The comics themselves were pretty good I guess, but not anything I felt I had to start investing my money in as I do faithfully to the Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe series. Well, as I was casually browsing deviantART, as I often do, I came across some more Darkwing Duck fanart, which always catches my eye. However, this fanart wasn't drawn simply as a homage to one of Disney's greatest Saturday morning cartoons, but also in commemoration to the news that Boom! Studios has plans for The Terror That Flaps in the Night (tm). This naturally called for the immediate Google search which yielded information that while a mini series had been planned for Darkwing Duck, the tremendous fan response (which I would've been a part of had I known sooner) had convinced them to do an ongoing monthly comic book series of Darkwing Duck starting next month! I am, of course, ecstatic and will make every effort to pick every comic of one of my favorite childhood characters while hoping that Boom! does the hero justice. Here are links to the articles I found. Much of the artwork pictured here is said to not be the final product. New Darkwing Duck Series - Preview of Darkwing #1 |

Wow that's great news to hear. Dark Wing could really work well as a comic. |

Nope, comes out in June but I'll definitely be looking for it. Durn right it could work as a comic. Darkwing's a parody of several different comic book heroes combined. They've had a few comics here and there before a long time ago, a few of which I have, but this sounds pretty promising. Just so long as they keep everything true to the series. Hopefully the writer's done his research on the series and plans to bring everything together faithfully while keeping the stories fresh and interesting. I suspect each plot will be resolved in one or two issues at the most (the series only ever had one or two part episodes as well), but I'd certainly enjoy seeing some longer story arcs. I'd really like some real passion put into these comics, but I'm going to try and not set my hopes too high, though. |

Hopefully they do put a lot of effort into it after the fan reaction. They know a lot of people are looking forward to this that are fans of the series and not just kids picking up something popped out by Disney who never even heard of Darkwing Duck until now. |

Alright, so I finally got Darkwing Duck: The Duck Knight Returns #1. I missed the release (back in June) since I couldn't find a date anywhere. Interestingly enough, the book is sold out everywhere. In fact, the book is flying off the shelves as soon as they put it there and is not available on Boom Studio's online shop either. I had to resort to eBay naturally and I'm working on getting #2. Hopefully they'll hold #3 and the following issues for me at the comic shop. I must admit I'm really surprised to see the book be THIS popular, though I'd like to say it's justifiably so. Darkwing Duck is one of those things that might've passed under the radar for some people, but has amassed a lot of fans obviously from during it's run and since. So, onto the comic itself. The artwork is really great. It remains faithful to the style of the cartoon and the coloring is especially well done in my opinion, particularly in regards to lighting. The writer has done his research well and referenced several episodes of the series, some obvious and some very subtle. Everyone seems to stay true to their personalities as well. As the story goes, Darkwing Duck has been out of action for over a year as the corporation Quackwerks has stepped up to enforce justice in the city of St. Canard. Even the St. Canard police force has been disbanded in favor of the Crimebots that now patrol the streets. Former police, everyday citizens, and former criminals alike, and even Drake Mallard (Darkwing Duck) and Elmo Sputterspark (Megavolt) all lead boring lives maintaining the Quackwerks systems. The comic flips back and forth between Drake commuting and pencil pushing to him reminiscing about his glory days as Darkwing Duck until the comic's conclusion where the time has come for the Duck Knight to return. Altogether, I say it's a well done effort into continuing the adventures of DW and I look forward to see where it goes from here. |

Wow that apparent popularity surprises me as well. I added the series to my Netflix queue, but perhaps I should move it up in the queue some. |
