Wii U Discussion

I'm a bit in my cups at the moment.
This is probably still too early but I kind of feel like speculating on the Wii U. I guess this will eventually turn into a regular Wii U discussion thread, or maybe I'll make a new one after E3, I dunno. We'll cross that bridge when we get there.

So, what do you think the system will be like, what do you want from it, etc.?

I was thinking about it, and you know what I think will be a Wii U launch title?

Pikmin 3

The game has supposedly been in development for years now, and was moved to the Wii U. It's probably almost done at this point, and I can easily see Nintendo revealing it this E3.

Of course I'm almost always wrong about these things, so I've probably damned it to being released near the end of the Wii U's life...

Also, an article about someone's recent experience with the Wii U. Confirms that it will use an AMD Radeon HD GPU and a multicore CPU...though it's subject to change.

Ah, Pikmin 3! Now that you mention it I can totally see that happening. The new golf that showed the controller on the ground where you can see te ball/tee gave me the idea of plucking Pikmin out of the controller like you would out of the ground... But I don't know if that would really work. Maybe the controller will be used more like a command tool for ordering your Pikmin (and keeping up with them).

I can't think of any other Nintendo games under development that we know about besides another Super Smash Bros, and that won't be coming for quite some time, so maybe you're right about Pikmin being a launch title :). I wonder what other kinds of new games might be announced at E3 this year... Perhaps a new Star Fox for the Wii U? That'd be cool B)

Also, the performance specs of the new Nintendo are sounding great :D

I bet the system will hit in September, October. We will see a good smear of games at e3 and I am willing to bet sonic generations will get a wii u port. Or we will see a brand new title shortly after launch.

I'm betting on November myself. That's when Nintendo usually releases their big stuff, plus it's the holiday shopping period.

Spike TV interview with Reggie. Not really worth watching, the only interesting bit is that Nintendo will be slowly releasing info on the system until E3.

What do you think the shop will be like, or what do you want it to be like?

It's one of the things I'm most curious about. Will it have the same selection as the Wii Shop Channel? Will they add GameCube games? I could see them doing that, especially since the Wii U won't take GCN discs. I also really hope we'll be able to transfer our WW and VC games to the Wii U.

And if the 3DS is any indication, the Wii U's shop won't have stupid points!

EDIT: I was looking at the tablet and it hit me...streaming your VC games to the tablet. How did I not think of that before? I'm even more interested in the digital distribution part of the system now.

Oh yes! It's genius! I really hope that's true and you can transfer all of your Wii VC games over to the Wii U and play them on the tablet! (can't say the same for WiiWare because just about all WiiWare uses the Wii Remote). Since GameCube discs will no longer be supported I suppose the same must go for controllers... So that controller option will no longer be available for our Wii, WiiWare, and VC games? :/ I also hope for the ability to transfer your Wii game, WiiWare, and VC save data. And speaking of data, how much internal storage do you think we'll get this time? Will the system have a removable HDD like the other 7th gen consoles? Or maybe it will rely more on SD cards for storage like the 3DS does?
(edit: Man all these thoughts really make me excited for the Wii U)

Also, I agree with you that we'll probably be getting our Wii U's in November.

Here's some more food for thought: will the standard retail value of a Wii U game be taking the price hike to $60? Or keeping the Wii's budget price?

A lot of people are wondering what retro's next game will be. I for one think it's smash bros 4.

@Gamma Yeah so far no GCN controllers for the Wii U but every Wii controller (Remote, Classic, and Board) will work. For storage, there was a rumor that it'll have 8 GB of internal memory. I don't think that's been proved or disproved. You'll be able to use USB storage devices, which I guess includes USB external HDDs. If that's the case I hope Nintendo lets us use whatever ones we want and not proprietary ones.

And I've wondered about the price of games myself...plus the price of the system. I think Nintendo learned a lesson from the 3DS launch and will try to price the console wisely. If I had to guess right now, I'd say it'll be $300. The only doubt I have is because of the tablet. I bet that thing jacks up the price. And how expensive will that be by itself anyway?

@Einar Project Sora is working on Smash Bros. from what I've read, so no, unless Retro is just designing a stage or two like they did for Mario Kart 7. I'd rather they work on another Metroid, or maybe even a new Star Fox. I almost said F-Zero as well but I'd be fine with Sega doing it again.

A video of the Zelda tech demo. We've all probably seen the tech demo before but this is the best video I've seen of it.

On the game prices, isn't it funny how Nintendo has so gradually moved up the price of new handheld games with each new system, but the home console games have always sat at a steady price of $50?

As for the controllers I'm sure that the Wii U won't have GameCube ports: that really wouldn't make any sense; all Wii and VC games can be played with either Wii controllers or classic controllers. We can be glad for the look of the console, but I'll really miss being able to use my GameCube controllers in Brawl, N64 games, and maybe another Wii game or two.
