PlayStation 2 Remembrance Thread

I'm a bit in my cups at the moment.
This Christmas (Christmas 2012 that is) I will have had my PS2 for 10 years. 10 years of gaming on that thing, and I still remember getting it like it was yesterday.

A lot of people say the SNES is the best console ever, and despite it having some of my favorite games of all time, I think the PS2 could give it a run for its money. There's just so many good games for the console it's amazing. And there are still games I want for it.

So what did you think of the PS2? What are your favorite games for it? Any fond memories?

Like I said, I still remember getting it on Christmas of 2002. My first games for it were Sly Cooper (I've already said how much I love the series), 007 Agent Under Fire (an okay James Bond FPS) and Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (awful, buggy game, I should've gotten Ratchet & Clank instead.)

I didn't get the PS2 right at launch, because at the time I thought $300 was a lot for a console. Plus they were all sold out everywhere. I think one of the earliest games I got for PS2 was Mr Mosquito. It was a weird little game based heavily on Japanese culture where you played as a mosquito trying to annoy some poor family. The flying controls were awful but the game was kinda funny.

One of my favorite games was Final Fantasy X. I really thought it was amazing at the time because the battles were so fast compared to IX. It' actually one of my favorite Final Fantasy games.

Then the more recent Persona games are certainly some of my favorites. It isn't often a console gets such good games near the end of its life cycle.

I did miss out on quite a few games like the Sly, Ratchet & Clank, and all Jak games after the first one. Though a lot of those have gotten re-released on PS3 so one day I think I'll try to add them to my collection.

Oh yeah, I still gotta play FFX. In fact, I consider the PS2 to be the console I first started playing traditional JRPGs on, starting with Xenosaga Episode I in 2003. I haven't played it in a long time so I'm not sure how much I'd like it today. I remember being so bad at it, I got stuck on bosses often and ended up restarting the whole game three times. During the final parts of the game I spent so much time level grinding to beat the final bosses.

I only have 3 PS2 games left, FF12, Beyond good and Evil, and Okami. Haven't beaten any of them...

MOTOR GAMES ON CARDCYCLES
Somehow, the title made me think that Sony finally "discontinued" the thing, but I guess not.

So yes, the PlayStation 2. I got mine for my birthday in September of 2002, after I had been clamoring for it for a while. It also had the honor of being my very first DVD player, so I received it along with a copy of Monsters Inc (my first DVD). Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly which games I got first for it, but I know that fairly early on, I got Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, and a bunch of Nickelodeon games. And Kingdom Hearts because it had Disney stuff in it, despite the fact that I was fairly clueless at the time on how to play an RPG that wasn't catching mons (I've learned since then).

Then, I learned about the GameCube, and since all of the games I wanted (meaning, Nintendo games) were on it, I decided to save up money to buy one. And I did. Unfortunately, this lead to me nearly ignoring my PS2 for a while, due to the lack of exclusives I was interested in at the time. So most of my attention went to my GameCube, and my PS2 basically became a DVD player.

But finally, the poor thing got a resurfacing from me a couple of years ago when I decided that I wanted to get into Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. So yeah. The rest of the story tells itself. Sometime last year, however, my sister wanted to watch a movie with the PS2, and came complaining to me that the controller wouldn't work. So I tried every controller I had, and surely enough, none of them worked. That's when I knew that something was wrong with my eight-point-five-year-old PS2 Fat. Specifically, the controller port was busted. It could still turn on and run things and everything, but it's not like I could do anything. So I finally retired the old thing. And then a few months later, I went to GameStop and bought a refurbished Slim with FFX, X-2, and XII, and it is now sitting in my dorm room right next to my Wii.

So yeah, that's my PS2 story. I'm quite sad that I never really got a chance to appreciate it for most of the time I had it, but I still have FFXII and KHII Proud Mode to beat, so it's not over yet. And I've also never tried out pre-Future R&C, Jak, or Sly, and I definitely think that I should someday.

I can't believe my almost decade old fat PS2 still works. The controller that came with it broke randomly (along with the extra controller I got with it the same day) but the console itself works. The memory card I got with it still works too, though I'd like to get an extra for backup and because space is running out on it.

And yeah it took me a few years to start appreciating my PS2 as well. I'd say it wasn't until 2006 that I really started to appreciate it, starting with Dragon Quest VIII.

Well, it happened. It finally happened.

The video is all corrupted on my PS2. Just suddenly started happening while I was playing Persona 4.

I don't want to believe it but I think the old girl has finally had it. :'( And I certainly can't afford to get a new one, and I don't know how I'll get money for one. This blows.

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that. And right in the middle of Persona 4. I don't know what else you can do. I hope you can find a solution soon, though I know what it's like to be in a tight spot for money.

Do you know what the problem is exactly? Simply replacing the cable won't help?

I've tried searching around but I can't seem to find info on what I'm experiencing. I don't know if it's the cables or not but it doesn't seem like it is. I suspect it's something with the video chip.

I had basically no issues with my PS2 before this. I got some slight corruption when I was playing and got a little worried. Then after several minutes the screen started getting messed up.

I was able to work something out and I got a slim PS2 from Gamestop. (Thanks again for pointing out how good the prices at GS are Bermuda)

So far so good. The slims get hot though! Understandable since it's smaller. And the fat one is such a beast compared to the slim. I was able to fit it on my TV stand next to my N64, I definitely wouldn't have been able to do that with the old one.
