Yes, for real. There were rumors about it recently and it's been confirmed. There's also a countdown on their front page.

I don't know how many of you know/care about System Shock but this is pretty significant. Not only was SS2 the most demanded game on GOG, but it was notorious for basically being in licensing/rights/trademark/whatever limbo. EA has some rights to it, but after the SS2 dev closed down, part of the rights went to an insurance company who just sat on the rights and apparently wanted a lot of money for it. It's explained more in the article.

Several months ago I played a pirated ISO of SS2 with this fan patch that lets it run on modern systems. If you played Bioshock, this will feel familiar, though a bit clunkier. I didn't get too far but definitely plan on buying it legit from GOG at some point.

So despite being a tad clunkier, how does it compare to Bioshock?

I've only played the first, but to be honest, it wasn't my type of game so I've never beaten it (it also didn't help that I had to give it back to my friend :P) and I heard the second one wasn't very good, but I have heard some good things about System Shock 2.

I probably wouldn't get this game until it's on sale, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for it if it still holds up today for those that weren't already fans.

Its very similar to Bioshock actually, but its systems of perks, upgrades whatever you want to call them. Are MUCH less forgiving then Bioshock. The choices you make are permanent and as such experimentation is impossible! If any of you do get it, I recommend the "spoiler free" walkthroughs online. If you don't want to do that, then be prepared to start over at least once.

If you didn't like Bioshock, I'm not sure if you'd like System Shock 2. Like I said, they're pretty similar though as you'd expect SS2 isn't as streamlined as BS. SS2 has more RPG elements than BS for sure, if that sparks your interest. You have stats like Strength, Agility, Cyber-Affinity and some others. There are also three different classes you choose from at the beginning of the game that decide what you're proficient in. And like Bioshock's Plasmids, there are Psionics that give you powers.

As for Bioshock, I personally thought Bioshock 2 was great on the gameplay front. It felt like BS1 with the fat trimmed off so to speak. The story wasn't as interesting as the first game's though.

EDIT: Einar makes good points as well. I had a similar experience with Deus Ex and ended up starting over after not being satisfied with my choices. Also, if it helps, I'll clarify the classes. Choosing Marine is basically your standard FPS experience since you'll specialize in guns. OSA specializes in Psionics and Navy is a jack of all trades.

Hmmm, that does interest me quite a bit! However, I'll have to be in a certain gaming mood to want to do that probably :P.

I KIND of knew that, since i do remember them announcing the 1999 mode for Bioshock Infinite (which actually looks pretty cool/good!) being inspired by that type of game play.

Sounds like it'll be a game that I'll most likely check out when it's on sale, and not any time sooner :P.

The game is really good, great music, great story just stellar all around. But, it's like the bridge between modern and classic games. The grueling difficulty of the old mixed with the modern convenience like restore points.

System Shock 2 has finally come to Steam, and 30% off for a week! ($6.99). That's actually pretty tempting since it's cheaper than on GOG...but no, I can't. Later, but not now. It'll get better sales anyway.

Nice, not a bad deal!

You get a bunch of goodies with the GoG version that you don't get with the Steam version though right?

Yeah, you can see what you get on the GOG page. So, a good deal if you don't care about not getting the extras GOG has.
