It's like Microsoft and Nintendo had a bet to come up with the dumbest name for a new console :P and Microsoft won. (One. . .won? touche) Posted Image Controller, console, kinect. Specs include: 8 gigs of RAM, USB 3.0, Wi-Fi Direct, a Blu-Ray disc drive, 64-bit architecture and "practically silent operation." I haven't been watching the conference, so I know nothing about games, I just dropped in for a bit and saw some stuff about a Halo live action TV series and stuff about the NFL (riveting Microsoft. . .absolutely riveting!) so if anyone has additional insight please share that here! So far, the console itself looks kind of stupid to me, and I think the controller looks like a cheap knock off. Those specs are sounding pretty good though so can't complain there. Oh and that name. . .yeah. Did they explain the name yet? (Cause it's the whole package in one?) EDIT: No surprise here, but it's confirmed that there will be no backwards compatibility with the 360. After seeing a lot of emphasis on it's multimedia aspects of the console and not just gaming, it's solidifying my choice to just stick with Nintendo and Sony this coming gen and just leave Microsoft in the dust. What about you guys? This console interesting you at all? Edited by Hyper Metal Sonic, May 21 2013, 01:31 PM.

I kinda like the look of the console. Not sure about the controller, my knee-jerk reaction is that I like the look of the 360 pad better. And they gave into Bluray huh? And well I guess Xbox 1 won't be used to refer to the original Xbox anymore. :p Though I think I prefer this over calling it the 720. :eggman: I AM interested in what's happening with the new consoles since what happens with the consoles affects PC games, but really I don't see myself ever getting this, especially since most of its games will be on PC. And this also hammers in the high possibility of there being a big gap between the Wii U and the other consoles. 8 GB of RAM alone makes a huge difference. EDIT: Picture from another angle EDIT 2: really I don't think I should even say "possibility", it's obvious there's a huge gap in power between them. Yeah, the RAM is a good point. But at the same time, how much of that 8 GB will actually be devoted to non-exclusive games you know? Especially if there will be PC ports of a game (they're not going to release a game that requires 4GB+ minimum RAM I wouldn't think). I'm sure quite a few of those Gigs are being used for OS itself and all the bells and whistles. Even when the Wii U starts picking up in sales again, I think it'll miss out on quite a few games because of it's power (or lack there of) but I think it's too early to say and can't really wait to see these new consoles roll out and see how the game changes. |

Even if they use. say, 2 GB of it for the OS and other crap, that's still 6 GB for games, 5 more than what the Wii U uses. Also there have been some recent PC games that recommend 4 or more GB and at least one that has 4 GB as the minimum. Requirements are getting higher. I'm also not sure what you mean by non-exclusive. Both the PS4 and One have 8 GB of RAM. It's not like the 360 vs PS3 where the former had 512 MB and the latter had 256 MB. |

I mean it exactly as it sounds. And kind of going off what you said. What if the PS4 uses 1 GB of RAM for the OS, but the One uses 2 GB? (Or any variation of those numbers) That'd give one more than the other to play around with. Obviously, a game like COD probably wouldn't take advantage of that extra RAM, it wouldn't be in their interest, but an exclusive first/second party game would have a little bit extra to work with, and since they don't have to worry about ports it would be within reason to do it. It wouldn't be anything massive but definitely something. And that may be true, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if a lot of PS4/One games don't take full advantage of all that RAM. The thing I'd like to know most is how much of that RAM devs actually have access to. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if it was 4 for the OS and 4 for games, which would still put the Wii U at a significant disadvantage but at the same time, if sales pick up and there's reason to develop for it, I don't see it as something that'd be completely impossible to work around for SOME games. Yeah, Wii U is definitely going to lose out on some support due to its hardware, that's for certain but I think the Wii U is at more of an advantage than the Wii to 360/PS3 were. Which thankfully, most people don't buy Nintendo consoles solely for 3rd party games :P. |

Okay, I'll concede on that, but I think we're getting tunnel vision here actually. RAM isn't the only thing of course. The differences in the GPUs and CPUs also matter. It's especially worrying when the Wii U's CPU is apparently slower than the 360's. "Which thankfully, most people don't buy Nintendo consoles solely for 3rd party games :P." But that's not a good thing! :eggman: |

Oh most definitely! Yeah there's way more factors that's gotta go in to first before we have any concrete information. I'm just having a little fun speculating with what we got! As a multiconsole owner, I really don't mind too much, since chances are if there's a game I wanna play I'll most likely have a means of playing it (eventually. . .) I just like have discussions like this. And, while that may not be a good thing, at least we're used to it by now :p. |

Same, realistically I'll most likely play mostly Nintendo games on the Wii U and everything else on the PC, but I do still enjoy discussing these things. |

Yeah, it's just fun to talk about! My set up will probably be Wii U majorly since Nintendo games are usually my main interest, and then PS4 for 3rd party efforts, and PC for indie efforts that don't hit consoles, or classic games that may hit GOG that are either not on consoles or are cheaper. I plan on getting a new PC sometime in the near future. I would like a new one to do video editing on, and thankfully a computer for video editing will go hand in hand with one for gaming, so that should have me covered, but that won't be for a long time probably. . . |

One of my biggest regrets this past generation was buying both a PS3 and 360. I really don't think I'll be buying both a PS4 and a 1. As it stands right now, I'm leaning more towards the PS4. And one is a dumb name, but I do like it better than pretty much everything people have been guessing. 720 always sounded stupid to me, so I'm glad they didn't go with that. |
