Ladies and Gentlemen, The following is my reflection of WWE One Night Stand, this past Sunday, in Jacksonville, FL. Firstly, I found the opening packages of the pay-per-view quite uninspiring and this didn't exactly help set the tone for the pay-per-view. The Orton vs Vandam match was average as a pay-per-view opener, but the lack of extreme spots during the match really made it evident that "Extreme Rules" may be viewed as False Advertising by the end of this night. Nothing in the strecther match was particularly memorable, and, like everything on this night, will be forgotten about very quickly. The finish to the match seemed pretty pointless, although I suppose we can all give thanks for the fact that Vandam was on offense the majority of the time, so we didn't get a rest-fest from Randall. The segment after that match seemed a poor way of booking Vandam out of the WWE, and Orton's arrogant cocky nature played off with the home fans in the way it probably should. I was surprised by the lack of noise from the WWE fans in attendance for Orton, and I'm kinda wondering now if he will EVER get over as a heel in the WWE. The tables match was a filler match, and seemed devoid of any real purpose. It was nice to see the old ECW reflected on this show, although the Dudley's spot seemed to reek of ignorance. Theres not much I can say about this match other than the fact that it was...there. Still, it gave the fans a chance to stock up on Redbull to stay awake after being subjected to Randall in the previous match. I personally enjoyed the ladder match, however, I thought there were a few botched spots such as Shelton's rope spot knocking Jeff from the ladder. There appeared to be a decent amount of action, but no one real spot which will be remembered. Charlie Haas didn't exactly do much, but I think there is potential for an awesome rematch here. The backstage bit incinuated this. On to the Lumberjack match then, and I really feel this is a waste of time even commenting on. The choice of lumberjacks made absolutely no sense, and the match itself was awful, as was the finish. Notice how Santino Marella's namebar said he was IC Champion, yet Chavo's made no reference to the Cruiserweight belt? Hmm, nope, apparantly WWE didn't either. The few seconds during this match that the picture stream failed was almost certainly the best part, and the bear hug finish made no sense. Also, when will they stop pushing Henry as the World's Strongest man already, Jesus?! The pudding match was probably just about the worst segment in WWE Television history. I thought this would at least be decent on the eyes, but it wasn't even that, it looked messy. After Candice has worked so hard on her wrestling, the least she deserved was a Wrestling Match on this show, although I can only assume this is being saved for Vengeance after WWE gave up on this show. Another awful finish to the match, but the segment at the end with Maria and the Referee was amusing I guess. Still, If we wanted comedy on this show, Hornswoggle and Boogey could have seen to this. Vince McMahon is capable of wrestling very good street-fights; so would somebody please explain to me what happened on this show?! Maybe now Creative will realise that Bobby Lashley is no Stone Cold Steve Austin?? Or maybe not! I didn't enjoy this match, although I am glad Vince finally dropped the Championship. The only downside is that it was to Bobby, but these things happen I guess. Shane got his 2 spots in which he has in every single match he has wrestled since 1999, still, at least in his eyes they still spring surprise on the audience, right? This really just confirmed the awfulness of this entire show. The Steel Cage match was a match I had no expectations for at all after seeing the Judgment Day match. With that being said, This match usurped all of my expectations, and turned out to be a really good match. I actually managed to derive some excitement from the show for the first time in the final 5 minutes of this match, It just got very interesting and exciting with a couple of near-falls. Edge doing the cowardly heel spot worked pretty well, and Batista put in a greta performance by his standards. Match of the night by the best part of a mile. Now usually, if WWE expect $40 for this show, they'd give us a WWE Championship Main Event which lasts longer than 10 minutes. Again, maybe not. Khali really, really, cannot Wrestle; and now after being pinned by Cena, this dire feud really should be over. The only decent spot was the FU off the crane bed, speaking of which, why the hell was there a crane on the stage to begin with?! After all the FU teasing on Saturday Night, this finish was always kind of inevitable, and really we were just praying for the match to end by the time it occured anyway. Real poor way to end a pay-per-view. In closing, The show marketed as an "Extreme Rules" show was actually far from extreme, although I have bought some chocolate pudding so that I can feel the excruciating hardcore effects of this deadly substance first-hand. WWE will REALLY have to put on a top card for Vengeance, like they did last year, but unlike last year, will have to deliver on it. WWE Fans must really, really regret ordering this show last night, and fans really should sue for false advertising given that this was as extreme as bubble-wrap. The only thing that was painful about this show was Vince McMahon's odd promo backstage, where he appears to have lost his mind. In truth, anybody who watches his programming will have realised this fact a long time ago. In the second blog of the week, Tomorrow, I will look at the WWE Draft this coming Monday on USA Network. |
