Guess who's back.... back again. Hey there peoplez, I am indeed back to write another blog after an indefined period of dissapearance. Im sorry I havent had a chance to be posting more blogs recently, but things should be back to normal now in that respect. Anywhom, enough of the prelogue, this column today looks at The "Great" American Bash, which I still believe to be false advertising. Randy Orton vs Dusty Rhodes - To kick off the most boring Great American Bash in history, we have the man who invented the Great American Bash squaring up against the most boring man in history. Seems like a fitting way to open this round-up of the show. Quite why WWE would employ a rope match so close to the Benoit tragedy i'll never know, although after this contest I may take a leaf out of Chris and WWE's book, and go searching for that rope. I just hope this match is kept short, and doesn't have the inevitable interference from Cody Rhodes. Prediction: Randy Orton wins to the sheer delight of...erm....nobody WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match - Finally, the cruiserweights make it onto a non-gimmick WWE pay-per-view; although the match itself is relatively underwhelming. Shannon Moore, despite suffering very badly cut hair, has been cleared to compete on this pay-per-view along with Chavo Guerrero, Jimmy Ying Yang, Jamie Noble and Smackdowns #1 Announcer Funaki. Well, he is better than Michael Cole anyway. I'd expect this to be the typical 10-minute, neatly done cruiserweight match with a decent amount of highspots and action. It wont be a classic, but it'll make a fun, lively and engaging undercard spot Prediction: Jimmy Bang Bang finally wins the Cruiserweight Championship, and not one person in the HP Pavillion actually cares. Carlito vs Sandman - Singapore Cane on a pole match, hmm? Why don't they just put Kane on the pole, he'd feature more prominently than he ever could during that 3-way later in the night. This match should be a short interval like match without too much emphasis on it. A good time to use the bathroom, or perhaps, for our viewers in the UK, time to make some superstrong coffee to keep you all awake. You might need need it to survive Smackdown's main event without reaching for a pilow, eye mask and soothing cup of lavender tea, putting your feet up on the sofa and curling up into a deep sleep. Prediction: Sandman canes the living hell out of Carlito, en route to another win. ECW World Championship Match - Firstly, I think it needs to be said that the John Morrison character is stupid... I actually prefered Johnny Nitro. Either way, he will be at this pay-per-view, taking on ROH's former golden boy, CM Punk. Another match with potential to be good, as their contest at Vengeance was really quite good considering it had such a short period of time. At least the fans won't crap all over this like they did a month ago because Chris (Benoit) wasn't there as planned. I think if they give them a decent 15 minute slot tonight, we could see a fairly good contest. I'm eagerly awaiting this match to see if WWE book it anywhere close to correctly, and holding my breath Prediction: John Morrison pins The Punk. WWE Intercontinental Championship Match - Finally, Santino Marella has done us all a massive favour in losing the WWE Intercontinental title after a reign so bad it had Pat Patterson spinning in his grave, and I wasn't even sure he'd died. This match has a little bit of history behind it for anybody who remembers, as Umaga won his first Intercontinental Title from Jeff Hardy back in February on an episode of Raw. Given the prelogue and the fact that Jeff Hardy is probably the 2nd top face on the brand at the moment, I'm actually amazed this feud wasnt given more build-up. Come to think of it, given this is WWE, am I actually that surprised? Well anyway, I believe this should be a good match and, if given enough time, could be a stand-out contest on a lackluster card. Expect some well-executed spots from Jeff Hardy and the usual Umaga offense. I do hope this doesn't turn into a case of another Umaga squash match....mind you, on a card with 9 matches, there is always a danger. Jeff could have some great feuds with Orton and Kennedy over the Intercontinental title, and Umaga's character doesn't need the title right now. Prediction: Jeff Hardy wins the IC title following a Swanton Bomb! WWE United States Championship Match - From one Hardy to another. Matt Hardy vs Montel Vontavious Porter for the US Championship has Match of the Night written all over it. We've seen some really, really great matches from Matt Hardy ever since WrestleMania 23, and the transformation in his ability this year has been amazingly impressive. His match with Dave Finlay right before Vengeance is right up there with the Cena vs Michaels hour as the best television match of the year thus far. Montel Vontavious Porter has also come a huge way in 2007 since disembarking his feud with Kane... some 5-star contests with Chris Benoit have been seen this year, along with good solid matches with Ric Flair and Batista as of late. These superstars personify what the SmackDown brand is all about, clean cut angles, high-quality wrestling matches and good ring psychology. Both have the ability to keep the fans entertained in long, well worked matches, and Matt Hardy could now be viewed as the top face on Smackdown, and MVP as the top heel. This match may be for a 2nd tier belt, but is the true main event of SmackDown's portion of the show. Expect an awesome wrestling clinic in this one. Prediction: Matt Hardy wins via Pinfall WWE Womens Championship Match - A rivalry which really escalated back in May, and broke onto the pay-per-view radar in a sticky mass of slurpy pudding nine weeks ago in Jacksonville, should finally end this evening at the "Great" American Bash. Candice Michelle had really, really been improving in the ring throughout the year..but she's had a few terrible matches recently, and looks to have slipped back into 2005 Candice Michelle. Melina is, of course, still good in the ring.....and has a really awesome new finisher! With any luck, it'll finish Candice's run as champion tonight - old habits never change. Prediction: Melina wins the championship back by pinfall, and not a pudding in sight WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match - Batista vs Kane vs Dalip Singh. When I look at this match, I wonder why they didn't just make it Dalip Singh vs Batista, because that's effectively what it will be anyway. This might just be the single worst World Championship match that I have EVER seen in my life. Kane seems to be a bit of a spare part in this equation this evening, I really don't see any possibility of him winning the match, and it looks like he will be the one pinned to set up the One-on-one match between Batista and the retaining champion at Summerslam, where the Championship will actually change hands. The recipe here would seem to read Kane and Batista form an alliance to take the heel down until one gets knocked to the outside while the finish is contested in the ring. Prediction: Match Sucks, Champion pins Kane, retains, nobody cares WWE Championship Match - John Cena vs Bobby Lashley. This is something I can be positive about, the build this match has recieved has been very well done. They've succeeding a UFC-style big-fight feel to this one, with all the vignettes and other superstars opinions and stuff. This is the kind of realistic build-up more wrestling matches should recieve, rather than the exuberant kayfabe angles which these matches normally come packaged up in. I love seeing WWE trying something a little bit different when it comes to building an interesting angle which the fans will enjoy. In regards to the match itself tonight, I think it has a lot of potential to be a very solid contest which should be given about 25 minutes and feature a series of false finishes and well booked psychology thoughout the match. I'm intrigued by this match, and looking forward to it, because I know we are bound to see something good tonight. Prediction: John Cena retains via a Pinfall Enjoy the show! |
