The combat became better the harder the difficulty you played on. When you actually have to coordinate your biotic/tech abilities and use them in order to win, it gets a lot more intense and interesting.

This. The combat is awful on anything less than Veteran. Once you're actually strategizing and working for the win instead of auto-piloting through a bunch of easy enemies it gets a lot more fun. I also agree with Flashy. Campaign mode in shooters is almost always boring, repetitive drivel, at least gameplay wise. I'd say ME is definitely a step above others.

Nonetheless, it's a pretty flawed game in many aspects. But I've never loved such a flawed game so damn much.

The main problem I had with Mass Effect 2 had nothing to do with the combat. The combat was great. In fact, they fixed the godawful combat from Mass Effect, which was my main gripe with that game. It looked great and had a cool story and solid writing, but as soon as you had to fight the game became annoying at best and frustrating a lot of the time.

In Mass Effect 2 they simplified the combat a bit, turned it into more of a shooter (thus giving you more control), and just made everything more streamlined and fun. I was rarely frustrated during combat.

What I thought they did wrong was taking out a ton of the depth to the whole RPG experience. I was fine with them turning the combat into more of an action RPG because it worked, but they removed so many little features and watered down all of the RPG stuff that I enjoyed from the first game.

Fixed that for you. I left the grammatical errors because it just wouldn't be you if it had good grammar.

badass brotherhood of steel in the background
And they wondered how he dealt with stress so well
Wild guess? You could say he stay sedated
Some say buddha'd, some say faded
Someday pray that he will grow a foreign barn full

i think my main beef was how one dimensional it was; every combat situation was essentially the same... find cover, shoot when they aren't shooting. the mechanics were solid, but the execution was very dull.

This describes every shooter ever.

every boring one, at least. i like running and gunning like in l4d

Really? Because L4D is the most boring apocalypse imaginable. I don't know how it manages to make wholesale slaughter of zombies tedious, but it does.
