having not played the game yet, from what ive seen and heard i do agree with you on that. if they made it more sectional they could have made the word detail on those parts better and had better art assets instead of spending all their time remaking an accurate 1949 la. but to their credit you can actually just chose to transport where you want to go.

Yeah and I usually do, as if you hit anything while driving you get fined for it at the end of the case and it effects your final case rating.

See, here's the thing. I don't have a problem with being forced to abide by the law, but I do have a problem with a huge aspect of a game being pointless and not fun. The open world in LA Noire just isn't fun. There is literally nothing to do in it. It serves no purpose other than a kind of cool recreation of 1949 Los Angeles.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks...

The open-world is not pointless. It serves as a medium for car/foot chases, side missions, and to give the player a chance to break up the monotony of interrogation.

See? Not pointless.

You can also collect hidden cars, film reels, find landmarks, and enjoy the splendor of re-created Los Angeles.

See? There is literally something to do in it.

Ultimately, the open-world is probably just there to facilitate car chases, which can cover extensive ground. Leaving you the option of driving yourself around in free-mode and in between interrogations/cases is just a bonus for players who enjoy exploring, much like the car viewer in the main menu. I, for one, don't really care about what the cars look like, but I can understand how someone might.

The damage threshold must be pretty high, though. I've five-starred plenty of missions while driving like a drunk, mid-bender.

I suppose they could have done something like sectioning off the story areas with an option for free roam whenever you felt like it.

I think it's a little more than just being pointless and not fun, I think the open world engine kind of detracts from the meat of the game a bit. It makes the more precise actions like navigating / investigating crime scenes feel stiff and awkward. Open world works with games like GTA and Just Cause because those are sprawling sandbox experiences where you're flying around doing whatever your heart desires. Nobody really expects super fine-tuning there. But, when you're following a specific set of moral guidelines and spending most of the game walking around contained locations trying to pick out little clues to solve a crime, the open world engine just doesn't make sense.

I knew almost nothing about this game going into it, except that it was open world, had a noire style, and involved Rockstar. I literally hadn't even seen gameplay footage of it, so I wasn't really expecting anything. I'm still not very far, but it's starting to pick up and I'm enjoying it more and more as I go along and get used to the system. It was slow and a little bare in the beginning, so I think the flaws stood out to me much more then.

Alright, fuck all that. I just powered through an eight hour chunk of this game and it's pretty great. Awesome atmosphere, especially when played in HD on the black and white setting. I don't really mind the open world anymore, and there are moments where it shines through and I kind of like it. Ideally they should have switched to a different set of game mechanics upon entering crime scenes, but eh, it's easy enough to adapt to. The first few cases are kind of lame and repetitive, and it still feels shoddy under the surface at times, but overall, very well done.

I'm a cheap asshole so there are few games that I can recommend buying at full price, but if you can get it for $20 off, you totally should.

Game is great, but the open world is still pretty much useless. Should have taken a page from Heavy Rain and made it more or less linear, just giving you the option of where to go next by selecting it in your handy notebook.

I think you missed the point of his comment, because he definitely wasn't complaining about the game having more than one disk.
