"it's not just been this morning.....I've been searching other planets too, just got here from Ariel, where I lived for-" He cut off suddenly, straightening up and looking slightly ashen. He recovered very fast, though. "look, my parents were killed because of the Alliance, or don't you listen? I think that's reason enough to want to beat up those bastards a litt-" he sat back again, suddenly, and stared interestedly at the woman, seemingly just realizing something. "you have quite a handle on the English language, my friend, not to mention a little french...somehow I have trouble believing I'm the only one who is holding back secrets at this table." he had thought there was something different about this woman, and if there was one thing Nikolai knew, it was the art of language, and this she was not who she said she was. Neither was he, exactly, but...

Once they were seated Aaron had a chance to watch the actions of both of his companions. He noticed the subtleties of their actions now in a way that he couldn't have while sitting between them and turning his head like he was watching a tennis match. Nikolai was right, that was sure, he wasn't the only one with secrets. Aaron had gotten around enough to identify Adelle's accent as a high class one, she was clearly more than a bookseller. It didn't take a genius to figure that one out. She pretended well though, he could give her that. And Nikolai, he did little to hide the fact that he had secrets. He kept rising to Adelle's prods, revealing more and more about himself each time and Aaron could tell that that was exactly what she wanted. For his part Aaron didn't care much for secrets. Everyone had secrets, even if they were silly trivial ones. They were really none of his business, even if he was curious. Perhaps, Aaron reflected, he was too quick to trust people...

As Nikolai finished his reposte Aaron felt compelled to end the verbal sparring. He leaned forward over the table and rested his elbows on it. "Alright now, both of you. Everyone's got secrets. There's no need to go dragging them out in the open kicking and screaming." He looked at them each in turn, locking eyes for an instant in attempt to rein them in, he turned his gaze on Nikolai second, "Look, as long as we can agree that none of us is an undercover Fed," He glanced at Adelle for conformation, but figured he was probably right, "You have nothing to worry about."

"And as for you," His head turned a bit to look into Adelle's mismatched eyes, "I've got nothing against people who can speak eloquently," He congratulated himself on the use of that particular word, "So you can speak freely if you want." With that he leaned back casually in his chair, raised his glass and took down the last of his drink. Before setting it back down he looked mournfully at the ice that remained.

"Well Great Mediator" said Adelle, looking at Aaron cynically, "would you like us to start all our sentences with 'I feel like...' or 'I understand, but...' as well?" Then she grinned and slapped him on the shoulder, startling him. "Just picking on ya buddy. I'll talk however I like whenever I feel like it, but I can't say I don't appreciate your open mindedness. Another round I think, even though I can't really afford it, and you," she pointed at Nikolai "need to calm down." She turned away and signaled the bartender.

Aaron took her sarcasm in stride, understanding it perfectly, being prone to it's use himself. He cocked his eyebrow at her nonetheless and pretended offense for a moment. "Yes, and later we'll be sketching our feelings using bright water color paints," He rejoined at last, sarcasm flowing like a mountain stream. "And I prefer Grand Arbiter, thank you very much." He nodded to himself. "Yes, that works well..."

"She's right you know," He said, adding his two cents whether it was looked for or not, when Adelle addressed Nikolai. He raised his empty whiskey glass to the bartender's questioning glance.

"So Nikolai, what exactly are you planning on doing right off once you get this ship and crew?"

Nikolai downed the rest of his ale in one gulp, after listening to the others. the next words out of his mouth are smooth as amber. "no, Adelle, let me get this next tab, it is the least I can do for the irritant I have been. It
is a knew world for me; this is a strange place." he flags down the bartender and says, "next round on me, and change my ale with something a bit stronger, Whiskey, I think."
he pulls back his coat to grab his wallet, flashing a bit of metal on his belt, before covering it up again. he hands the bartender the money, and then looks at Aaron, and slightly smiles, remembering something. "'A merry heart does good like a medicine; but a broken spirit dries the bones.' I have been quite a nuisance. forgive my idiocy, both of you. if I am to get a crew I feel I need to let go of my complications for awhile." he leans back again, and takes a sip of his whiskey. "I'm not planning on doing anything right off, Adelle, that would be quite foolish. I wish to look for cargo, make a few dollars, get rolling in the shipping business. that is if I get a ship and a crew. I can't look to far ahead, to many possible variables." then me smiles again and downs the rest of the whiskey.

"but first, I need a ship." he gets up and looks them over again for a second, and then walks right out of the bar. the wind blows up as he opens the door, flaring back his long trench coat, revealing a revolver at his belt as he leaves.

Adelle looked at Aaron, "shall we follow him?"

Just as Nikolai finished speaking the bartender came with the next round. He picked up the cup that had been brought to him, dark amber colored whiskey swirled the ice around inside. Aaron raised the glass to his mouth, but then Adelle spoke and he lowered it. His eyes flicked at the door through which Nikolai had just gone, then back to his glass. "I suppose we probably should... He seems like he might be the type to stick with." Aaron was not at all sure that he wanted to be involved in what ever racket Nikolai was proposing, but the prospect of a ship was tempting.

With a decisive clink he set his glass back on the table, but not without a mournful glance at the whiskey. It was a travesty to leave good drink like that, but other matters were more important. He stood, smoothing his vest with one hand. "Shall we?" He crooked his arm, an invitation for her to take it. Unfortunately for Aaron he had a penchant for old fashioned courtly manners. It rarely went well for him, at least on most planets, when he offered his arm to a girl. Apparently such things were outdated, and now only saw use at expensive dinner parties. Mostly they thought he was mocking them, sometimes they simply laughed. Once or twice they had taken it completely the wrong way, and Aaron had had to detach himself to keep from landing in an awkward situation. But then again sometimes they accepted the invitation with grace, so he continued to foster the habit. That and kissing a girls hand, although he tried that less often as it frequently left him with a sore cheek or led more quickly to the type of committed situation that he really didn't care for.

Adelle stifled a laugh. She hadn't had a man offer his arm to her since she'd been kicked out of Companion training. It was an outdated gesture, but still used in the higher circles of society. She certainly hadn't expected to see it in this bar. She didn't accept yet but glanced at the full whiskey glass James had set down. "Mustn't go wasting dear Nikolai's money now" she said, "I've been a bookseller long enough to appreciate free alcohol. Drink up and we'll be after him."

Aaron didn't bother looking crest fallen at her reaction to his chivalrous gesture, he was so used to being laughed at that it no longer had any effect. Oh yes! Aaron James was a sad, persecuted man. He often lamented the fact. At some point, he often told himself, he would have to invest some serious time in brushing up on current social graces. The fact that he spent most of his longer voyages reading classic literature, often rife with such noble, romantic ideals probably didn't help him any. He resolved to ask Adelle what might be a good alternative to his normal reading, she was a bookseller after all and was bound to know something.

The invitation to drink up was not lost on him, and before she was even finished speaking he was drinking. It took him two short gulps, and when he was done he let go a long sigh as the whiskey burned down his throat. A hand on the table served to steady him as the room tilted a little, then righted itself like a good room ought to.

"Alright then." He tipped the glass upward and an ice cube slide into his mouth. Looking satisfied Aaron crunched it loudly. "Lead on!" This time fully aware of how rediculous he looked he swept an arm outward to indicate the door and bowed at the waist, "After you."

Adelle led the way out of the bar smiling. This was turning into quite the lark. James followed after and she paused to ask a nearby vendor if he'd seen a harried, grumpy looking man. The fellow pointed them down one of the smaller backstreets that led to another, more open, part of the city closer to the shipyards.

The sun was bright when Nikolai exited the bar, heading straight for the shipyards. As he came from a side street onto one of the main "parking lots" he was yet again in awe of the size of some of the ships, some towering above even the buildings themselves. they were lined up, side by side, facing a wide concourse filled with people and vendors. power cables lined the streets, and a loud thrum filled the whole area.he wasn't looking for a big ship however, just a small cargo vessel with some power. he wasn't sure where to begin though, he probably should have waited for that Aaron fellow, he probably knew what to look for. he looked around to see if they followed him. sure enough, there they were, walking along the concourse looking around. he waved over to them. he was very excited. to have found a possible captain, and a good one at that, was more than he could have hoped for. and the lady seemed as if she was slightly interested too, if not just to keep from being bored. heh, who would've known?

Aaron saw Nikolai just as he saw them, he pointed him out to Adelle across the crowded area, then strode forward in response to the beckoning hand. Somehow, between the bar and the shipyard, Nikolai had picked up a better mood. Or at least that's how it seemed. Now the man looked somewhat like a kid in a candy shop. Aaron felt approximately the same way, except that in addition to being in the candy store, he knew every single ingredient in every single confection, and consequently knew exactly what he wanted.

"You're not kidding about wanting to get a ship right away, are you?" His voice was tinged with something that could have been admiration, but might also have been jealousy. Either way Aaron was careful not to offend this man, possibly his only chance at a ship. "What do you say I help you out? I know a little bit about ships, which ones fly the best, which ones respond nicely." It was a not-exactly-subtle endorsement of his skills, but Aaron didn't mind. In fact it was all he could do to not get his hopes up too high.

Adelle viewed the proceedings with interest. She didn't know anything about ships really, in fact she tended to have trouble with things with engines, that was why she'd applied for the job at the bookstore. Still, things weren't getting anymore interesting around here and this could be a quick way out. Her boss, old Jovey, wouldn't mind. He'd been muttering about closing up shop anyway, perhaps realizing that his dream of a mass return to paper was not going to happen while he was still alive.
She twiddled with her bracelets while she listened to the two men talk. That Aaron certainly wasn't pulling his punches. He obviously wanted off planetside. She wondered why. She felt something rough under her fingers and looked down. Damn... on the underside of her bracelet the leather was already starting to roughen up and pull apart. Only a little bit, but she could swear it was getting faster every time. Oh well, with any luck she'd be away soon and wouldn't have to worry about it as much, depending on how trustworthy these boys turned out to be.

Ashley "Apollo" Roberts was in a bit of a pickle. This 'make a new life for myself on the Rim' venture was not going as planned, or maybe it was, since Apollo had not done an excessive amount of planning. He was rich and yet he was starving. Okay, so maybe starving was a bit dramatic (he had only missed one meal) but Apollo wasn't sure if his refined pallet could take another helping of... of whatever it was people ate here on Persephone. He certainly wasn't about to try a "good dog."

His assets, trust fund and stocks did him no good out here where he could not electronically access it. People on the rim dealt in hard cashy money, and Apollo was having a hard time acquiring that. Apparently concert pianists and trick shot archers just weren't in high demand out here. He had managed to find some work forging official documents for a weaselly fellow named 'Badger' but dealing with that uneducated prick made his skin crawl. Also he got the impression 'Badger' would sell him out the moment he knew Apollo's real identity.

Apollo decided it was time for a change in scenery. He had just enough hard currency to book passage on a tramp freighter, assuming he decided against one last 'good' meal before leaving, and he intended to board the safest looking vessel he could afford. The idea of going into the black on some luh suh heap was more than a little nerve wracking, but the prospect of staying here and either starving or becoming integrated in the local black market economy was worse. Apollo dressed in his finest clothing (hoping to make a good impression) and set out to find a suitable ship and crew. "Who knows," Apollo thought aloud, "maybe I can book passage on a finer ship by offering my services in addition to my fare."
