They are gentle and loving and have an intense desire to please their owners. Cairns are intelligent and full of spirit, mischief and merryment. They are very protective of home and family and are quick to sound an alarm. They are not fighters- they will not pick a fight as will some other terrier breeds- but they will stand their ground and in no sense of the word be called cowardly. they are not barkers, but will warn of a prowler or other out of the ordinary circumstances. These qualities make the cairn Terrier an excellent all around companion and family pet. It has often been said that if you have a Cairn Terrier in your home for a year you will have one for the rest of your life. Posted Image Cairn Puppy History- The Cairn Terrier is an ancient breed which many dog historians believe to be the first true terrier. Cairns were initially called short haired Skyes but Skye terrier fanciers protested the use of the name. To avoid confusion,it was suggested that the name of the Shorthaired Skyes be changed to the Cairn Terrier of Skye. Cairns were piles of stones which served as landmarks or memorials. Common throughout Scotland, cairns were frequent hiding places for the small mammals hunted by terriers . The shortened name of Cairn Terrier was agreed upon in 1912. The Scottish Terrier and West Highland Terrier eveloped from the same basic stock, the three were often found in the same litter and distinguished only by colour. In 1924 The Kennel Club ceased to accept for registration the progeny of Cairn Terrier and West Highland crosses. Previous to this, white puppies of such matings had been accepted as West Highland Terriers, while the darker pups of the same litters were registered as Cairn Terriers. Hundreds of years ago the white puppies of thes terriers were culled as they were not desired, probably because they were hard to see against the snow. They came from the highlands and isles of west Scotland where they spent their days scouring the fields and cairns ( rock piles and rock fences) for Badgers, Fox, and Rats that stole grain and livestock off the Scots' hardscrabble farms and estates. |
