Janet, I cut the hair relatively short where the top of the leg meets the body, it stops matting and knots. If I find a knot it's always small and I just snip it out. I'd ask you groomer to make sure those areas are cut extra short, or you can give them a trim between groomings. She may also be leaving a bit too much of a Westie-like "skirt" and the hair that hangs down from Gem's underside may need to be a bit shorter overall. The matt king would hurt like heck in that area, the skin is very tender and will pull with any heavy matt-busting. You might want to try the matt king over Gem's coat between groomings though - it should pull a bit of hair as well as cut a bit. It will keep her coat a bit harder as it softens from clipping.
