Spaying is the complete removal of the uterus and ovaries. Besides producing eggs, the ovaries manufacture the females sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone which are responsible for bringing about the secondary female sex characteristics such as a more refined body shape and the development of the mammary glands. Another of their jobs is to regulate the lubrication of the bodies mucus membranes. Mucus membrane is basically a lining of various internal and external organs - therefore the body "dries" out somewhat.

The eye keeps itself clean through a combination of blinking and natural lubrication, a spayed bitch still blinks but no longer has the same amount of lubrication to wash out foreign objects - hence infection.

Exactly the same thing happens in menopausal/post menopausal women.
