How about crating him at night full stop? I look at my crates sometimes and compare them to the nice squishy sofa we kepe in the kitchen and just assume the dogs prefer the latter - but sometimes, they actually prefer having their own contained little space.
I know I should put him away every night - he was going in regularly as I was determined to keep him in there every night for a good few weeks to see if I could break the habit, then he hurt his paw and couldn't get in with his lampshade on, so he came back on the bed.

The trouble is, I'm too weak and want him with me. :( I will be STRONG.

I know he's not worried about being in his crate - he goes in it himself some nights before bed, or I wake up and he's in there (normally if I'm fidgety). It's all me being sad and lonely. Mwah! :'(
