Hi there and a very warm welcome to TT. A useful place to start might be www.dogsblog.com where you will see a list of breeds and may well find yourself a nice Border Terrier in rescue. Border Terrier rescue themselves are obviously worth getting in contact with. The relief/rescue organisations aim to match the right dog with the right owner and may have more enquiries than they have dogs, so it would help to be as flexible as possible in terms of age, colour and sex. If you want to find a good breeder, you could go to the Crufts website and check back through their archived results over the past few years for the Border Terrier results. Chances are you'll see the same kennel prefix names coming up again and again and you could try approaching these kennels direct. Realistically, you may be waiting some time for a puppy: the better breeders are breeding to get as close as possible to their particular breed's "standard" rather than breeding to provide puppies to the general public. The best they will do is put you on a waiting list with no promises. It may speed things up if you say you'd be happy with a 6 month old pup - some breeders "run on" puppies they aren't sure of but accept at 5-6 months they won't make it to the showring. Benefits here are you still get a fun-loving pup but he or she will probably be housetrained and are unlikely to have amassed too many bad habits. The places to avoid like the plague are back yard breeders who advertise dogs in the 'free adverts' Puppy farms - obviously! Thoughnot everyone understands how to spot them. Basically if an establishment is offering readily available dogs in several different breeds then they are a commercial breeder. Neither of these types of breeders will pay too much heed to breeding for character and temperament - which pretty much define terriers. BorderDawn is one of our BT experts and it might be worth sending her a personal message? Good luck with your search and do keep us posted with news of how you get on. |
