Don't panic! The vast majority of dogs have no problem with their anal glands whatsoever - they empty them without any help at all whilst going about their normal lives, barking, pooing, running etc, etc. When Rascal was being stripped, the groomer without doubt, would have checked them and if there has been any need for attention would have mentioned it. The main problem is that some dogs just don't suit modern diets and the glands aren't stimulated on a regular enough basis, a build up happens and they get blocked - but by no means does it affect all dogs. I've one the does and one that doesn't which is why we moved onto a natural diet which cleared the problem up immediately. The other cause is that a very small percentage of dogs naturally have a design fault in the gland leading to a predisposition to blocking. A good groomer is just as able to empty the glands as a vet. It's easy enough to empty them yourself at home albeit, slightly stinky! I've a website somewhere which explain exactly how to do it, I've try and find it if your interested. Found it! anal glands Edited by Tafia, May 4 2009, 12:28 PM.
