Usually spaying is carried out mid way between cycles, so once she's had her first season schedule the operation for two and a half to three months from the day she begins bleeding. I say two and a half months due to personal experience of taking a foster dog in to be spayed exactly three months after her season began. When the vet opened her up he said she was showing internal signs of coming into season again :yikes: and had I brought her in a day or so later, he would have opted to sew her back up without spaying her at that point.

The idea of spaying mid cycle is that that's when the dog's hormones are at their lowest and most balanced levels; the abrupt loss of hormone producing organs will be felt less at this time than others, so while there are no physical contra-indications to spaying a bitch at any point in her cycle, the mid-point is best for her psychologically. And of course you will only know when her cycle is by letting her have that first season.
