However, the vet has told my friend that there is NO connection between his behaviour and the hip dysplasia and has told her not to focus too much on the HD but to work harder on his demeanour!!!!!!!!
WTF? And how long did that vet study in canine behaviour to come up with that conclusion?

It's possible the dog is just a bad tempered dog, but really, constant pain so bad he was collapsing is gonna make anyone irritable. Even a terrier with their tolerance for pain of any sort.

Fred is much happier now, although he is still a pain in the butt half the time. The biggest change we made was stopping the two day events, and really limiting even one day events. I also watch him for signs enough is enough, and if I stop what we're doing (have spent all day training then backed out of assessments as it's just too much for him) when he tells me he's had enough he's a much more pleasant dog to have around, and possibly Cooper will be the same! Even if they are both still mardy buggers. ;)
