I can't really add to the advice already given, except that if you train sit / stand / down and heel so that the dog is expected to continue in that position until either another command, or a release command, like 'okay', you can more or less dispense with stays, waits and leaves. I find this seems to make sense to most dogs and it helps enforce the fact that you are making the decisions.
