Ok so this morning I went to my local pet supermarket, along with a new quilt/crate blanket for the girls i bought a clicker, having never used one before im wondering who else has used them and does it mean if i have no clicker with me then Amber wont do as she is told?

The training school i took my beardie jazz to never used them plus i was paired with an old enlglish whom was deaf so ive been used to hand signalling with my dogs.

My reason for getting the clicker is to try and differentiate between asking pebbles to do as she is asked, and to train Amber whilst both on the same walk. I would hate to have to take the girls out seperately for their walks as the 2 of them are such close buddies now, for specific training in the house i do sperate them so they get one to one attention from me and also as pebbles is much older she is more advanced than Amber.

Any help from you guys would be great if you can advise me if doing the clicker thing with Amber now would be a good or bad idea ?

Wooooooooooo hoooooooooooooooo :yay: :yay:

This clicker training is going very well indeed.

Im on day 3 now, and tonight at the park with the kids as added distraction and getting them to make Amber chase them and follow where they were going I did the command "here" and pointed to the floor.......not once, nor twice but about 40 times.................. every single time she came straight back to me, travelling on some occasions a good 50 yards from the kids back to me, sat down right in front of me looked up! ................. "click" one very well deserved treat handed out :hi5: :yay:

Not only that, but Pebbles too, every time was straight back, she will sit when recalled anyway, but to know that the change over hasnt had the least affect on her and she still comes has relieved all my fears of a change coming at this stage.

Im feeling very proud indeed with my girls, and both of them had a treat tonight of chicken breast and rice cooked by me for tea

Well done Pebbles and Amber :yay: :yay:

Tammi - how do you do it? Is it like one click for sit, two for stay etc or just one click for each thing? Im quite interested in trying this but don't know where to start

You speak the command, and when they have obliged with the appropriate behaviour asked of them you "click" once and hastily provide the treat. I guess for people with a youngster about or a pram to push or any other distraction then it's quite a job to do as I found with just their lead round my neck and treats in one hand and clicker in the other I couldnt have coped with a phone needing to be answered or smoke a ciggie!! ............ then again doggy training time isnt a time when I should be having a ciggie, so I guess it will help me cut down too!!

I have to say I found both the girls response to it very good, and it was almost as if when Pebbles got to me first and she didnt hear the "click" she was asked to wait, and dutifully did so,almost as if the sound was now more important than the treat, then when Amber caught up and plonked her lil botty down too, they both heard the "click" and got their treats.
Im one very happy mummy with this, and will keep you updated as to when Ive got both girls doing star jumps through hoops with the clicker, and rolling over and putting right paw's up then flopping left ears down to look cute!

Yes please keep me posted on this cos I would like to try. Also if you manage to get to the stage where you can hold the phone and ciggie I would like to do that too!

Actually talking of smoking it is really strange what they come to associate with certain things, because when we first got Rupert, whenever I was taking him in the garden for a toilet trip - I would light a ciggie, because I knew I could be out there for sometime. Now that he is toilet trained, if I do light up he runs outside to pee on his own(out of the cat flap)

How very funny!!. Maybe you should become a dog trainer for the nicotine lovers too! Take one ciggie from box, upon this gesture ones dog will sit, on placing in mouth ones dog will promtly roll over and play dead, with the flick of the flint then all dogs must immediately be placed in the garden in order for their business to be done (said in my bestest school matrons voice which is the nearest sounding voice i can think of like my old dog trainer!!!)   .......... Rupes is so adorable Laanz, can we possibly have some new piccies soon, im missing seeing him again

Clicker training just getter better and better.....recall today 100% both girls first time, followed by a sit with no command as they now know that will be the 2nd request from them both. Im just over the moon now, and even got a doggy walking pal Carole and her gorgeous JRT Tilly tempted by the clicker too!

Ive just come back from the park on such a high with how well the girls performed and even showed off to Carole with Pebbles here, sit stay wait (treat placced on the floor for her to leave ) untill the command "ok" :yay:  :yay:

I think I could actually do cartwheels across the lounge im that excited  :D

LOL @ the ciggies -when the dogs get really good they can light the ciggies for you and hold them while you get the treat out of your pocket :P
I've been doing some clicker with Macey and she is really responsive to it -I've found Murph is tuning in to it too -although I'm not sure if it's just competition for the treats ( but thats not a bad thing either ;) )

LOL

my guys have made similar associations. If I'm working on the pc...all I need to do is light up, and turn around on the swivel chair....for some reason, they interpret that as the signal that we're going out, and they all rush to the front door.

With regard to clicker training....I've hoards of books on the subject, which I've read repeatedly...but I just don't seem to get results from it. My guys are too focused on the treat that they ignore the 'click'....I've never had the eureka moment with any of them. Even when trying the bog-standard 'touch the stick' exercise. I feel I need someone who is experienced with clicker training to come and help me, because something is obviously going wrong...but sadly clicker training over here is virtually non-existent, so I'll just have to wait until the Irish cotton on to the idea :eh:
