Have finally got Duncan to go down from a distance - thought we'd never get there BUT it's oh so slooooow - not exactly a drop-down more a leisurely stretch then I'll just lie down for her eventually! How can I make him see that it should be a little bit more enthusiastic than that - would like to make sure that he would go down immediately in an emergency.Thanks.

What treats do you use? I found when practising "sit" with Holly, that if you use a variety of treats (plain biscuit, chocolate drop, cheese, corned beef or tuna treats ;)) the quicker she did it, the better treat she got. She soon got the idea that if she did it immediately she got corned beef. Then when he does it immediately everytime, you have to substitute the treat for praise. Keep him guessing - you play the lottery in case you win, it's the same for him!

Yes I do use treats but problem here is that is a distance down,he gets the treat when either I go up to him or call him but it's getting him to drop IMMEDIATELY I give the command that I'm having trouble with.Should I stop giving him a treat if he's not fast enough to drop?

What's his down like when he's close to you? Maybe you should concentrate on getting really quick down's when he's with you and then gradually put distance between you.

I made it a game with Toby, I'd move him around the floor and if he hit the deck as soon as I gave the signal (either verbal or hand signal) he'd get a treat. If he didn't I'd say 'too slow' and move him around again without treating him and try again.

Tracy b yes his down close by is very good - and I'm sure it's because there will be a treat forthcoming! Will bring him in closer then no treat if it's not fast enough. Really must work on this as when taking him out for his last walk at 9.00 a gorgeous staffy puppy ran out onto the road to greet him and got hit by a car.Thank god the driver was literally crawling along and he just got a glancing blow, not hurt at all as far as we could make out.Now if the staffy knew the "down" command it probably wouldn't have happened. Will let you know how we get on.
