I have a gorgeous patterdale terrier puppy who is 6 months old and called Jack. We have trained him ourselves and everything seems to be going ok. Since we got him he has always had a variety of toys and chews and has never been bothered in chewing anything else until now. I understand he has a new set of teeth and might want to try them out but its getting beyond a joke. He hasnt chewed anything in the house but he seems to want to chew everything when he goes to work with my boyfriend. He has chewed a handbreak, the lining of a van and eaten a folder full of paperwork! He always seems to be getting told off. I dont know whether its an attension thing, but hes never on his own, he goes to work with another dog who is very well behaved. We have had to leave him at home today because its causing problems for my boyfriend job. |

Oh dear
:o I've never had a puppy myself, but can imagine how frustrated you're getting. Could he be bored in the van? Have you tried leaving him with a kong stuffed with tasty things? Is he in a crate at home, coz I dread to think what you'll get home to if not... :D |

He is in the van very little during day. They are only in there if there are other dogs around as they cant watch them constantly. He is in a cage at the present. I darnt take it away at the moment. He has lots of tasty treats and loves them. I cant get my head round it. He even knows its wrong. His head is down and tale is under when hes actually doing it! i just dont understand. |

Does he do it when he's on his own in the van, or when your boyfriend is with him? |

Just a thought but could it be stress related, rather than boredom? It could be that he is not happy travelling in the van? What is he like travelling? Could also be seperation anxiety - you say he's not left alone very often. He will be able to hear your boyfriend when he's in the van but not see him, which may be what is upsetting him. Could you put his crate in the van and then when he needs to go in, leave the van doors open so that he can see what's going on and more importantly see your boyfriend? Tracy |

It a pick up, so it wouldnt fit in. We have tried to leave him in the back of the pick up with the equipment but he doesnt stay for very long. I suppose we could try and make more of an effort to train him to stay there. Im just scared he'll jump into the road. |

You obviously mustn't let him get into a situation where he could get in the road :( It sounds like he's stressed at being left alone. How long would he be alone for if he was left at home? |

If he goes to work he will be with other dogs all the time but be away from people no more than 3 hours over the full day, if he stays at home he will be alown for a minimum of 9 hours. We should be able to sort something out im just worried that he may continue to chew at an older age if we cant stop it now. |

He needs to learn there is far more interesting things to do than chew! I'd leave him a couple of boredom breakers when he's on his own, it will take him hours to empty a kong if it's filled correctly! You could try going to Kong Recipes for ideas. Does he have a favourite toy? You also need to distract him any time you actually catch him chewing things he shouldn't. |

hi... it sounds like he is anxious... i read that when dogs chew it releases a a chemical in the brain that releives stress... i would leave him with a kong as prev comments have stated also try and not tell him off but ignore him if he has chewed something. hope helps |
