Hello to all.
Here is a brief guide to stripping a Border Terrier, it can also be used to do other broken and rough coated Terriers, such as Patterdales, Jack Russells, Fell Terriers etc..

The basic rule with any Terrier is HAND STRIP, do not clip unless absolutely necessary. Clipping alters the texture of the coat, it will become more Fluffy, none weatherproof and exposed undercoat always gives it a "soft" feel, when a Terriers coat in most breeds should be harsh.

As far as the Border, Fell, JRT is concerned, everything past the eyebrows comes off! Head, cheeks, ears, body, legs and feet!

First of all make sure your dog is ready for stripping. Borders look positively shaggy and the coat spilts and appears long and will pull out very easily, the other Terrier breeds don't usually grow quite as long, but the need for stripping will be very evident.

Ready for stripping.

Now most people who show will use finger and thumb, this can be tedious but gives the best effect. It will not break the coat as stripping knives sometimes can.
Gently but firmly take hold of the coat and pull gently but firmly in the direction the coat grows.

Repeat this right across the dogs body etc... untill all the dead coat is out. It may seem a mammoth task but it gets so much quicker and easier with practice, I can strip a Border from start to finish in an hour. Of course you don't need to do it all at once either, do a bit at a time, give time to you and your dog to get used to it.

You will see by this next pic, how pulling the coat out shows the coat underneath, a brand new shiny jacket waiting to emerge.

Trim round paws, bottom, and under tail with blunt ended scissors, its better to do round your males "privates" with scissors too, keep it clean!

The same is said for using a stripping knife, and for a pet owner it is much quicker and easier than using finger and thumb. Use a blunt stripping knife, available from decent pet shops or dog shows, "Mikki" do an excellent one, the red "fine" one is best and costs around £6.00. Here are a couple of pics of the knife being used, and showing the same effect. It must be said if a coat is not ready for stripping, a stripping knife can break the coat.

PLEASE remember if you have your dog professionally groomed, ask them for hand stripping only, especially with a Border. One final point to bare in mind is that a dog or bitch that has been neutered will sometimes have the texture of its coat altered by doing so, in many cases the coat will become too soft for hand stripping and and clipping may be the only thing to do.

I think that basically covers it, finally a picture of the finished article.

Dawn many thanks, that's brilliant,I'll have a go with Duncan - I often sit and pull bits out at night when he's near me - find it very therapeutic.

That is a brilliant piece of info, thanks! Missie is 14 months old, so her coat has had a full year of growth. Do you think she is ready for pulling? It is getting very fluffy and her neck is like a lions mane! There are pics in You and Yours could you advise?

She does look quite hairy. Try to pull it out, if it is ready it will come easily. Some JRT's coats can be a little "silky" and therefore difficult to manage, but most are really easy.

Thanks Dawn. I have booked her into a place up the road to have it done next Wednesday. I specifilcally asked if she does hand pulling, to which she said "yes, but I usually clip mine". I have said I want her hand pulled, but she reckons you should only do it when they are malting which would have been around a month ago. You are not based anywhere near Kent are you?!!!

No, sorry I am MILES away! Please MAKE SURE she is HAND STRIPPED NOT clipped, her coat will be very soft otherwise. I'm not sure whet she means by "when they are moulting?" they don't as such, the coat just gets as long as it is going to, then is ready to be stripped out, its really easy.

Dawn

You couldn't have timed this post any better for me as Buffy will need doing very soon, she seems to have turned into a hairy bear overnight!

What are your views on Coat Kings?? Toby doesn't get very hairy, his coat just goes very grey on his sides. His hair does grow longer on his back, like a mohican and because he is neutered it is not as course as Buffy's coat. Someone did say that a Coat King could be used to remove his mohican when it's ready to come out???

Hi Tracy

Most Border folk are not fond of Coat kings, I personally have never used one, but people say they are good to thin the coat out. I would go for a stripping knife such as the one you can see me using, a "Mikki" one, get the red one its the finer of the two and blunt the edges down. Toby's "mohican" should come out easily!

Dawn have stripped Daisy and she looks great but having problems with Duncan - who has never been stripped, can't seem to get a decent grip on his hair.Would it be better to have him done professionally first ie is it easier to strip a dog who has been stripped before? Don't want to hurt him and make him wary of being stripped.I presume Daisy has been done before as her hair came out so easy.
Thanks,Lynne

Has Duncan been neutered? Neutered males are notoriously difficult to strip, their coat texture changes, you may not be able to do it at all. i would ask a proffessional first and see what they say, it might just be he has a more awkward coat.

Dawn many thanks, yes he is neutered.I'll take him to a professional and get their opinion.I can get a fair amount of hair off but can't seem to expose that lovely soft bottom layer.Incidentally will Daisy's coat be altered when she's spayed? She looks ever so smart at the moment! Which will only last until she gets into the filthy brackish ditch she loves so much!

Well its strange, all the Border bitches I know that have been spayed have been totally unaltered, including mine. Don't know why, I expect there are some that do change but I havent seen them.

I have him stripped by a professional groomer but have to admit using a groom king sometimes in between.
