Dudley's hair and nails grow as if there is no tomorrow and having such fat pads it doesn't matter how much road walking I do his claws never wear down. From a puppy I have always clipped them myself but since I had him 'done' he will not let me near him with the clippers and will even take them out of my hand and hide them. At training there is a groomer who now clips them for me with thank goodness but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what they do about it as poor Jo has to wrestle with him to do them. I'm too wimpy to wrestle on my own in case I hurt him and telling him that it will only take a minute if he sits still doesn't seem to work. Any advise would be gratefully received as they grow so quickly I seem to have them done every 5 weeks. |

i have the same problems with my boy, but as his nails are black i never know how much to take off. i manage to get him still when he is asleep and sneak up on him and just take of the tips one at a time, it may take over an hour but it gets done. The groomer has refused to do him as it took her so long and he was trying to bite her, he would yelp and pull away and ended up with her cutting one claw so short that it would not stop bleeding for ages. I did stay with him to see if this helped but the b****** would not co operate. :x: So if you find a better way i will be interested. |

I tried the doing it in his sleep bit but he knows when I'm just touching his feet and when I've got the clippers. His groomer wont do them as she doesn't want to hurt him but Jo has been doing it for over 20 years so just grabs him in a half nelson and it's all over in 5 minutes. Dudley's nails are black too and as you say I don't want to make him bleed. I'll let you know if I find another way. |

Toby was exactly the same, anybody would think that I was going to cut his leg off the way he would react.
 He is a lot better now. I ended up just doing the one nail everyday and afterwards giving lots of praise and a really nice treat. I've managed to get him to let me do all his paws but only if he gets a treat in between paws. Buffy will let me do it with no problems, she will even give me her paw to do it. As long as I don't take too much off, I'm hoping that she will always be like this. TracyB |

Well if you havent seen the incredible torture caused when a dogs nail that has NOT been cut is torn from its socket, let me tell you it isnt nice! cutting nails is one thing I make sure all my dogs get done, however its done! My friends Lurcher ripped out her dew claw a few months back, still lame, still in agony, still screams when you touch it and is still costing considerable Vet bills each week for dressing changes. I know what I would choose. Dawn. |

Glad I don't have the same problem. When we first got Yoyo, the woman who owned him before us grabbed him by the back legs to show us how to cut his nails. He cried and screamed and wriggled and snarled etc. I felt so sorry for him. But she never walked him much (he used to take himself) so his nails must have needed doing all the time! He just seems to keep them short himself now. His back ones are very short, but his front ones are longer. They are never longer than on level with his pads, if that makes sense... :D |

It does make sense. The problem with the borders is they have such fat pads so claws have to grow really long to touch the ground. I try to let him dig as much as he likes to see if that will wear them down. I love YoYo he was what I was going have if I hadn't got Duds. |

i was not saying that i don't believe their nails should be cut, i do do mine regually to keep them short although with difficulty. I was just saying that doing it with a drimel looked painful, i have used one of the nail files for humans that do it like that on me and i managed to rip a nail down to the quick. OUCH. Besides if i even turned it on the dog would go barmy amd hide. But if your dog will let you do it, congrats. Mine doesn't like the hoover, hairdryer, brooms, mops or anything remotely like sissors so i wouldn;t get away with it. |
