Daisy has picked up another ear infection, she is prone to them and was wondering if there is anything I could be doing to minimise the risk? Her ear often seems dirty and I'll occasionally wipe the entrance with moist cotton wool. She does seem to have a lot of earwax and don't know if I should do anything about this or just let nature take it's course? |

One drop of warm olive oil in each ear once a day will help with any earwax, but it can make her ears quite oily if you let her shake her head after you've done it! Holly had quite a build up of wax, and this is what I had to do to help clear it. Best thing to do is after a couple of days of oil treatment, wait till she's been sleeping on her side, then wipe the inside of the ear she's been sleeping on. Not sure about infections and how to prevent them though :err: |

Poor Daisy! Archie has had a few, and the vet just gave me Canural (sp?) drops to clear it up. The olive oil sounds like a good preventative measure if its down to a build up of wax. Don't do what I stupidly did - bought some dog ear drops (Johnsons I think) and used them on Archie when he had a build up of wax - I thught 'great' as it got loads of dirt out... The next day his ear was very red, sore and swollen inside - the drops had caused a bad reaction and he needed prescription ear drops  |

Poor Daisy. How long have you had her? I ask because when we got our last GSD he had terrible problems with ear infections and had to have anti biotics the lot, Mum had to clean his ears out all the time BUT after about 6 months this all stopped and he rarely had dirty ears again. The vet thinks it may have been the fact that he was having proper food and his coat was then healthy so his body could look after itself. Other than that can't help I'm afraid but agree with the oil idea if you massage the base of the ear once you've put it in it doesn't all come back out when they shake straight after either. |

Thanks folks,I got Daisy on 01 April, she was a little street dog and her ears were very badly infected when she was picked up by the warden, she'd scratched her ears so much they were like leather :( She's having ear drops - Canural at the mo and because of her history I do check them regularly which his how I picked up on this.I'll keep a close eye on her and will try the olive oil as I think it is the wax build-up which is also leading to infection.Hope your theory is right Paula, maybe the improved diet will help too. |
