Pippin is now 10kg and although fed on a weighed diet and 1 hour walk plus small walk looks stocky and is bigger than other borders, he is slightly taller than the average border. He runs around the garden like a mad thing and does not have many titbits, so please help. is he obese, i can feel his ribs but i still worry that maybe i am doing something wrong. help please. |

Duncan weighs 10kg also and my vet says he is slightly overweight when I was worried he was very overweight! He has a very stocky build though and he says the build is as important deciding ideal weight.I would imagine if you can feel his ribs OK and he's full of energy he doesn't have a serious problem but maybe do what I'm doing and cutting back on the treats and titbits after I eat and adding more vegetables to his meals. My vet surgery run a free weight clinic maybe yours has something similar? Worth asking the practice nurse (rather than paying for a full consultation with the vet!) I always get the vet to check the weight of both mine whenever we have an appointment. |

Can you feel each rib, in a sticking out kind of way? Or can you feel them under a thin layer of fat? If you can't feel them much at all, then he could probably do with losing a few pounds. What is he fed on at the moment? Some of the big commercial dog foods are very high in sugar. |

Dudley weighs 10.5kg and the vet isn't worried about his weight half as much as I am. I'd like to get him to 10 but most of his weight is muscle at the moment so I'm not too worried. I do have to watch him all the time because his grandparents like to feed him. |

Around 7-8kg (ish) is about right for a male Border. Dawn. |

Keep an eye on his weight though,it's just like us - creeps up without us noticing! I only realised Duncan was overweight when at a Terrier Fair and compared him with a lot of other (mostly working) terriers and noticed the difference. And just like us it's tough to get rid of... |

It's very hard as BT's come in so many shapes and sizes. Most of the ones bred in the SE are very small and make Duds look like an elephant but when I go across the river to East Anglia and Essex they are nearly all his size and build. The breed standard says that they should be 13" at the shoulder but loads have been measured out of minis for next year and the height regs for that is 13.75". BUT that said they seem to be very prone to gaining weight whatever build they are and it's something you have to watch all the time even if they are fussy eaters like Duds and don't appear to eat much. I think he's like Fenella and can live on fresh air. |

I was once told by a very old fashioned vet, the best advice for any dog owner, of smaller breeds, is that the last rib or 2 should be visible but not sticking out terribly, if no ribs are visible then weight could be a little over so pop them on a diet and excersise a little more. :) |

It was in one of my books and I'm sure I saw it on the KC site. |

Can't find it so must of imagined it. Thought Dudley was getting fat on holiday until he went for a swim in the sea. When he came out he was really skinny. Really must get him stripped. By the way when I say really skinny I don't mean really skinny just thinner than I was expecting, when I weighed him at home he just what I wanted him to be just REALLY hairy. |
