Hi everyone, great forum. Firstly I would like to thank the staff at EMRC for their service and for putting me in contact with RED the Lakeland Terrier I’ve upped some pictures and will put more up of him out and about soon. My name is Phil and the wife is Lisa, we live in a lovely part of South Wales, surrounded by mountains, only 20 mins to the sea and 40 to the beacons. We got two kids aged 9 and 12 and decided to adopted a dog. Last week we drove to Nottingham to see Red. Red aka (Redfordd Griffiths) is doing absolutely fine. He is a brilliant dog, one of the best I have ever come across. For a 20 month old dog he is pretty advanced. After walking Red and seeing how he was with other kids at EMRC I knew he would be the perfect dog for us.

Red loved the journey home from Nottingham, I was a bit annoyed as I thought well if I drove almost 4 hours up the least red could have done is to drive home. But no he chilled out in the back with my misses. Stretching out and often sleeping with his head wedged in the compartment of the door, why do they do that? Very funny. When we got home the kids were waiting, he was and still is great with the kids. They were all over him and he almost wagged his tail off. After 5 mins of that I the kids were off to their rooms to give him some piece.

Reds first day / night went really well considering. He did have a wee in the house as soon as we got in from the drive. I am a firm believer that if this happens you should get a newspaper roll it up as hard as you can and hit the owner over the head many times for not watching ya dog close enough :-). So after spanking myself and cleaning up the mess without a fuss I popped him out for a walk. That night he was a little sick and did a poop overnight ie 12am till 7am. But this is only too be expected due to the massive changes he’s having to go through, first day nerves and excitement. Since then no more accidents other than one last night. But I think within 2 weeks he’ll be spot on. When his feeding times and walking times blend with his body. If not I can get him out of this within a month no problem.

Red is smitten with my misses, he follows her everywhere. Red is taken out for a very quick stroll at 7am every morning so he can do his business. Then he has food, he is on a mix (soon to be Burns) at the moment. I’ll also introduce some lamb, poultry, fish, with high carbohydrate starchy vegetables and grains i.e. potato, cabbage, carrot, oats. Along with his normal mix.

Basically I’m going to ensure he gets the correct vitamins and minerals ie
Vitamin A Beta Carotene ,Vitamin B-1, Vitamin B-2, Vitamin B-6 Vitamin B-12, Vitamin D, Vitmin E. Niacinamide, Folic Acid, d-Calcium,Para Amino Benzoic Acid

Calcium, Copper, Iodine, Iron Ferrous, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc.

I will be trying to minimise any vitamin C as this is quite bad for Lakies as it can cause kidney and liver damage if taken in high doses. So it will be the bare minimum with regards to that. Plus I’ll be keeping him away from junk food and highly acidic fruits, soy, avocado, white rice. But if anyone has any suggestions or tips I’m all ears Smile.

So far he’s staying on his mix has plenty of water as I think Red was a little dehydrated when we got him home as his poo was like a Mr Whippy. But that’s probably down to hormones. It has settled now and I think he is getting into the routine as its getting normal to half n half.

Back to his walks, after the 7am splash n dash. He walks to school at 8:30 on a haltie and is taken for an hours walk or longer. Then he’s taken out for 30min to an hour on a lead, at 12-1, then a up the school at 3:30 on a haltie and walked until 4:30 (switched to lead) down the woods n fields. Then splash n dash between 8-9:30 and another at 12am before bedtime. The splash n dashes will adjust after the next week when I finish off the Garden work so Red can have the run of our garden. Plus he often gets taken out in between these times for fun. IE I took him up the mountain today. He loves it! All those new smells, he’s a bundle of fire then.

Red does have a lead problems ie pulling and barking like a looney at other dogs and animals (typical asbo terrier). The pulling has gone with the haltie, he will walk to heel when he’s had a bit of fun and if you use a stern voice, but in woods and out and about on a normal lead well he’s all terrier then and pulls a bit for a while. I am now working on that, witht eh stop n go method and change direction method. With the mad barking, well we will have that cracked in under 2 weeks I reckon secret weapon is "hotdogs" He can not resist them, the force is strong in the hotdog. Basically the method that works for him, is ignore his behaviour, show him a treat prior to or in mad bark nutout episode, give him some hotdog and if needed tell him nicely to sit which he will, then calm which he does. I count to 10 with him looking at the other animals so that his short term memory empties and he’s doesn’t get reinforced for barking, then give him the treat and stroll on. We dont often get to 10 mind you rofl! As this works and he’s as good as gold, I’m hoping he will become classically conditioned to the idea of dogs = reward for me, then I'll switch that to operant conditioning and use word calm soon or even use a clicker, which being a psychologist I know he will get it in the end.

Red has also had many luxuries bought for him. He got his own comfy basket, with a mink blanket (fake mink) but bloody mink nonetheless, the spoiled bugger! He got a Kong and a ropey for his teeth and a cryptic toy feeder that he likes. He got his own grooming kit and coat oil, Groomers mild shampoo and fly shampoo (which he don’t need at the mo) . He’s registered with our vet that we normally use. Plus he’s got full M&S insurance that’s like pet plan ie unlimited in years. He’s book in to the groomers too, cantt wait as he is really in the rough.

He’s also going to obedience class with the misses. Can anyone recommend one near Pontypridd or in 1 10 mile radius? This is mainly to train him for off the lead time when up the mountain, or down our local field. At the moment we keeping him on his lead. I’ve got him a retractable lead to train him down the fields, its an 8m. Our only fear at the moment is if he darts off after some scent or animal, we cant be sure if he’ll come back to our calls, or be able to find his way back to us or the home. Or even kick off on another dog. I think he's a more nervous than aggressive towards other dogs as he just barks, does not snarl or show his teeth but he would fight if needed. The center claim he is good off the lead with other dogs, but I'm not so sure about that lol. Or if he escapes, as he looks a bit like Houdini. I’ve never had to train this with another dog as on the farm I never had to worry about this with our new dogs, let em run, no cars, people, shotguns etc, but a 3 bed semi, despite having a big garden is no farm lol. So any ideas and tips in this area folks would be great! As I want Red to have some fun running time off the lead, but without losing him and with him being away from Joe Public.

So all in all Redfordd (Red for short) is so brilliant I cant put it into words. He is fantastic with all the people that come to the house. I also have a granny flat attached to the home where the misses parents live, and they will be looking after Red when we go on our Florida hols in Feb, which we booked well, before we found our boy. Red really likes them. Red is bloody awesome with the kids, and the kids treat him very good as if he’s toddler ie with a bit of care, but still with play. Red seems over the moon, and will be even happier when I get the Garden sorted this weekend for him. I will be glad when I can give him more space off the lead. He loves being around people. He will not leave my wife’s side, which is good as she’s a housewife and will be spending the next 15+ yrs with him. Plus I’ve also taken two weeks off work to spend with him.

Also I am not sure if Red is a pure lakie. The center and his vet card claim he is. But I think he got some Border in him, as his body is a bit long, his neck is a bit short and he's docked for working. Any ideas folks?

Any advice or tips from anyone here would be greatly appreciated, especially regarding giving Red more freedom and space.

Many thanks from Phil, Misses, Boys n Redfordd

:welcome: Hello MrE and Red  He looks beautiful, and certainly sounds like he's settled right in with you :) What a star for being so good on his journey home, he sounds very laid back.

I'm also in S Wales (Usk) but don't know any training places local to you, but TracyB on here knows all the good places in S Wales so should be able to help out there :)

Sounds like you're doing everything right - I kept my dog on his flexi when I first got him until I was sure of his behaviour around other dogs and that his recall was ok. (Turns out he's not too keen on some dogs and when there are distractions his recall is iffy, but we're not all perfect  )

Hope you enjoy TT!

Hi MrE & Red

What a great name. I'm in South Wales (Cardiff) and particularly love the long legged terrier breeds so Red's already a favorite! I have 2 Welsh T's.

Wondering who you're taking Red to for grooming as there's a terrier specialist quite near to you?

Edited to add that JMO (and I'm more often wrong than otherwise!) but I think he's more likely pure lakie than not, back and neck lengths vary enormously within breeds whatever the standard says :)

:welcome: :welcome: You sound like the ideal Terrier Talk member - totally smitten with their dog but well aware of how trying they can be at times ..... Great also to find how much background work you did before taking him on - if only all owners were that conscientious.

 Sorry Red forgot to say you are

You've obviously had Lakelands before and it sounds like we will be coming to you for advice on diet etc.

Thanks for the warm welcome all. You are all right I do like this place, its seems like a very down to earth place with real people and real dogs working out their lives together. I've been making a gate today so not had a chance to come on. Red's got a touch of collar cough, so he's been walked on the halter only today, will start him back on the lead on Sunday :-) But he'll still have a run on his long lead I'll just walk him to the fields with the halter then clip him on the collar and take the halter off :-). Had some good news today. The farmer where I live in Tonteg will let me use his fields if I want to train Red up and to give him some off the lead run in one of his fenced in areas. Hopefully they will be fenced in enough :-)

The good thing about this is perhaps he'll bring his dogs out now and then and help Red get socialised. But more importantly, when he does run off or escape, which we all know he's gonna do at some point, if he heads to the farm and goes for it, at least he wont be shot!

Red's coming out of his shell even more, was having a good ole game of tug of war on his ropey with him today. Plus the kids joined in with him, which was loverly to watch. After buying it he never bothered, hence I thought its not his cup of tea. Nope he loves it now :-)

For sammie204 yip I was surprised to find a dog so quick, that’s a great site and people on there are very helpful even if some are a bit OTT with caring for the fallen, if you know what I mean :-)

For Paula & Duds nope I've never had Lakies but we did have plenty of terriers when I was young, and I've read as much as I can over the last 4 months, prior to getting a dog, on 6 different breads that I wanted for my family :-) Also I studied animal psychology as part of my psychology training :-) Its very interesting and is the real science imho behind some of the training we see today. Plus we had to learn a lot about the anatomy of cats, rabbits, dogs and primates and how diet could affect this. Unfortunately in psyche we studied the nasty end of what happens to animals which were caused by psychologists, neuro-biologists, biologists, behaviourists and cognitive scientists. These experiments would make you weep! Thank god they are not done no more. Nonetheless as bad as it is, it has formed the backbone all training plans to date and helps vets and behavioural experts discover and uncover medical problems. Believe it or not, a human, biological or accident caused lesion to areas near the amygdale and your pet would do everything in his power to kill you! Yet one correct one can tame to craziest pet that would normal have to be put down etc. So whilst we learn a lot of the fluffy stuff we also got to learn a lot of bad stuff, it’s a real hard study I’d be lying if I said I never had a lump in my throat with some of the lectures and study material I’ve had to go through. But despite growing up with all sorts of animals its more theory than practice at the moment for me, but Red’s changing that.

The book I got for Lakies is Lakeland Terrier by Patricia Peters, which I think is pretty good. Also I don’t know about you, but I’d love to learn how to groom. Sorry Red but after your first groom I’m gonna have a crack!

http://www.ardynas.com/Grooming.htm

Thanks for the welcome to zandd, yip I remember how trying they can be from when I was young. They seem to go deaf now and then rofl. I cant wait for around 6-10 weeks when Red beds in and shows his real personality! I’ll be on here screaming for help then I bet :-) He’s on best behaviour at the moment ;-) Plus JRT your right he is settling in brilliantly all my mates can not get over how well behaved he is!

Also thanks ClaireS for the advice I’ll ask Tracey. I only want a training school really for to help getting him socialised quicker if needed. IE back up plan if all else fails. I got to be honest I have phoned a few and I’m not impressed. So I’m only going to go to one if needed on recommendation. Basically as he is my wife’s dog she really wants to learn how to do it herself, which I will help her with no matter what. So next week we will be writing up a full training plan for him, that will work him and fill it with plenty of fun in between :-)

Plus Tafia, you lucky lucky lucky bugger, two Welsh terriers, they are lovely dogs and as bold as they come! I hope you’ve posted some piccies on here of them, I’m going to have a browse after to see if you have. Also I don’t know any groomers so I am taking him to the one at the Garden centre in Radyr they are called “Groomers” she seems to have all the gear, and says she can cut him to suit his breed no probs. Will post a picky after she’s been let lose on him ;-) But if you got anyone you can recommend for when I balls it up when I have a go, and then when Reds hair errrr grows back. Then please let me know :-)

Again thanks all for the warm welcome. I have learnt a great deal from reading the posts on this site. It’s a brilliant idea a place for terrier lovers. Its great to find a place that is so down to earth. I’m off out for the night now, bit of chess :-) but I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the forum when I get some time off tomorrow night :-)

All the best people and thanks ever so much again ;-)

Wow how lucky are you to have easy access to a fenced in area where Red can be trained in safety - that will help so much! Especially as it sounds like it's not used much so not too many distractions to beign with - that will make initial training much easier - especially if he's an escape artist like Daisy.... I so remember the very first time Daisy (my little rescue from here...) played a game with me,really makes you feel all "gooey" Your course sounds fascinating - be interested to hear how much of what you learnt you can apply to reading Red and his reactions to various situations - help or hindrance I wonder?

wow it will be great for red to have the run of a field too. i find it theorputic (sp) watching mine run free as it were.

we took millie to puppy classes and the main reason for that was the socialisation and the training was a bonus.

i hope you find one that you are happy with and good luck when you have a go at the grooming!!!

Yep defo a lucky break getting an area I can let him run and work with him. Help or hindrence mmm hard to say I think both to be honest as I am also a firm believer that whilst knowlegde is damned important, it can never replace experience. I guess Red will not be the only one learning ;-) Your right about plaing games with them, it feels brill and its lots of fun, makes you feel like a kid again lol. Plus your right bexster, watching any dog run free makes me feel simialr to fishing or watching the sea, just taking it in and being chilled out. That is unitll one of our asbo terrorist terriers decides to take on a few cows! But its defo relaxing, the running not fighting with cows :-) Mind you I think Red along with many other terriers may prefer the fighting with cows! Plus my garden will be all done for him by Friday \o/ Cant wait :-)

PS oh yep WalkTerrier.TalkTerrier I live near ponty :-)
