OK. Just reading the posts on which dogs foods you all feed, and the one on Burns and I have got myself all worried!

Both of my two have been on BETA puppy since I got them - in fact both breeders had them on this too. Currently I have been buying meat from my local feed merchant with is from France, and no doubt full of crap at £0.30p per pack. They have that in the morning (which the WOLF down) and then Beta in the evening (not as keen!).

I would love to tell you what is in the French stuff, but can't read French! The BETA puppy is dry food and has 29% protein. I don't have any major feeding problems (Alfie will eat anything - Missie is more picky) but I am now concerned that I am going to be causing problems for later life?

What should I be feeding, and am I doing it all wrong?! There is a burns supplier right near me but it is shockingly expensive - a same size bag of BETA is half the price more or less.

Nature diet looks good, but again expensive, and how much should they have?

Where do people buy BARF and is it difficult to store and prepare?

So many questions!!

Yes Burns is expensive, but it's not the only one of it's type! I choose to feed it to mine as it's only the one of the healthy varieties they'll both happily eat  I've no experience with Beta foods, but I used to feed Yoyo the typical commercial foods (Pedigree and Bakers usually), and since I changed him onto Naturediet and Burns his "funny turns" are hardly ever now, compared to every three weeks, his skin/teeth/coat are looking fandabbydosy, and he is much less hyper :yay:

You can get Naturediet cheaper if you are a breeder/trainer/pet supplies/behaviourist and buy it direct from them. I buy it in 10 boxes at a time and it works out at about 52p a pack (but I have to include delivery, if you live within a certain radius you get free delivery). Yoyo gets the equivalent of one pack a day and as many biscuits as he wants (I free feed the biscuits).

I stopped giving Archie Beta Alpha (think that's what it was) as he had skin problems - anything that says 'meat/animal derivatives' without actually listing the % of ingredients is suspicious to me. I think that the lower the protein the less hyper dogs can be too.

At first I chose the Beta because of price but realised that the JWB is fed in smaller quantities, mainly because its not full of fillers that the dogs don't need, so it ends up being roughly the same price.

I don't think there's a right and wrong food to feed, there are so many to choose from! But I would steer clear of anything that doesn't fully list what is going into the food. No idea about BARF I'm afraid :)

As long as the french stuff doesn't say le cheval. :o

If the french stuff is meat and bone minced you are half way there with BARF. There are lots of sites that tell you how to feed BARF. The simple point in BARF its that it's Bones and Raw Food, you need the to feed proper animal mince as human stuff doesn't have the bone.

Rather than the BETA puppy you could feed 2 meat and put steamed/part boiled veg to bulk it out. Carrots, cabbage, anything in season really but not too much potato.

Burns seems expensive but you feed less as there is no excess junk in the feed.

If your dogs are settled on their diet with no problems, DONT mess with it as this can cause tummy upsets etc.

If you find a food your dog enjoys, doesnt get any problems whilst on it, looks healthy and it's in your price range, you're doing everything right!

Ok, following all the posts on here, I want to try different food. Reason being - their poo is terrible on the french crap from the saddlery and I would like Alfie to be A LOT less hyper so perhaps the BETA is too high in protein. The only thing I have to be careful, is that missie doesn't drop weight.

SO

I went to my local feed merchant last night as they stock Burns and Natures diet. I looked at the JWB but that is 30% protein, so higher than the BETA! I looked at all the different feeds, and went for a very small bag of Burns to try it. Last night, I gave them half a pouch of Natures diet each and they loved it so much, Alfie pushed his bowl right around the kitchen as he was licking it clean! He then bought it into the lounge to me (I swiftly took it away!). Missie loved it too. I have also planned to give them a small amount of Burns this morning , mixed their regular BETA. Fingers crossed it will be better for them.

 My JWB is 20%, but that's the lamb one which helps Archie's skin. But its great that you've found one you (and the dogs!) are happy with :)

Just make sure that their food is changed over slowly over a week or so ;)

What is the CSJ? Not familiar with that?

I am mixing 50g of the burns with 100g of the beta, so as to decrease the beta over a week, whilst increasing the burns.

More info on CSJ here. :)

I feed Burns. When Tilly first arrived, I fed her the dreaded Pedigree Chum, but to cut a long story short it was full of colourings, and was so hard there was no way she was chewing it. I did some research and found out all sorts  about commercially prepared foods, so switched (gradually) to Burns.

You don't have to feed much, so it isn't that expensive. I would say that a 7.5kg (£17.35) bag lasts us about 2.5 - 3 months. I feed it in two meals, breakfast & tea, and usually add in some of what we're having too.

HTH

Georgie

Well am in process of changing what my dogs eat as its the nastiest crap going and some days they walk away from it and it gets wasted. following posts on here i've compared protein levels etc and went to a big pet store today, he recommended burns, he also suggested Chudleys (anyone ever heard of this) but then looked at the ingredients and it said it contained animal derivatives (all the left overs basically) which put me off slightly, he also stocks JWB, he gave me some samples of Chudleys (its approx half the price of Burns) but not sure i wanna go down that road. Went to my local pet shop who do not and cannot get burns, they have JWB but also suggested NUTRO (anyone heard of this). Obviously it would be good to get them something i can get locally but if i opted for burns that wouldn't be a problem as WOodgreen stock it so can get it from there.

Ok, well, I am persisting with the Burns in the morning - they were turning their nose up at it, but now eat it if I soak it in warm water. They are then having the Natures Menu in the evening. BUT - Alfie has had the runs a couple of times this week. Do you think this could be because it is not a puppy version (he is 10 months nearly)? Or because it doesn't agree with him? I have starved him for 24 hours after but one night this week there was a couple of spots of blood in it. After what happened with my friends Springer I am on red alert.

Should I continue with the Natures Menu or give up on it? Missie is great on it incidently.

Is it Naturediet or Natures Menu you're feeding? :)
