Was just reading though xxlynne's website www.terrierrescue.co.uk and found this article. It's a great read and a valuable source of information for any potential Terrier owners. About Terriers |

Very good article - wish a lot more people would read it before taking on a "cute wee dog who being little won't need much exercise and can be cuddled all the time" :( |

They've recently changed their website.Forgotten what the original article was but this is good as are other things on their site .Lynne is a passionate Terrier supporter - and knows all too well the problems they can sometimes bring with them (usually as a result of people not understanding their needs) |

A great article, especially the one section about the lack of road sense, I've seen some dogs esp in the country that would look both ways before crossing, not something ours usually pick up.... |

I think they paint a very bleak picture! I don't have half of the things they insist are essentials and seem to be doing all right! Most of the dogs I fostered were terriers, and of course there is Fred. Yes, he's a pain in the bum, but we manage with a 4' fence, he's got fab recall. Also I've never had a terrier here who was anything like the escape artist they paint. They make it sound as if you can never take a terrier off the lead. |

Funnily enough on tuesday just as we were setting off for a walk, little Sally (a staffy/jr cross recently rehomed through Four Paws) came hurtling down the road and into the park at 100 miles per hour just having got out of her garden. Her owners had put 3ft of wire on top of their 4 ft fence and somehow she'd still managed to get out. Boo can jump 4ft without even thinking. Most of the long legged terriers can. As a pup she made her way out of a first floor window and tried to make her escape over a leylandi hedge - sometimes it seemed as though she could squeeze herself through keyholes. I know she didn't but I really did have to have eyes at the back of my head. She's exactly the sort of terrier who would yoyo in and out of different homes if they didn't know exactly what could be in store. She did my head in at times and I was bought up that first and foremost terriers were not pets. We had to take a terrier from my grans farm in Leicestershire to live with us in Wales, because not only did he escape, he'd stow himself away on the village bus and take himself off to Leicester market. Once he'd discovered the bus there was no stopping him apart from keeping him locked up 24/7. Tag actually couldn't be walked on a lead, never mind off - the second he wanted to do something he'd slip his collar and be gone - but the dog was fun! Incredible ratter. Fantastic around chicken, sheep, horses & cats but boy could he keep a yard rat free. I think it's absolutely right to make owners aware of the worst possible scenarios, it'd be doing the dogs a disservice to do otherwise. |

I know there are escape artists are out there - I fostered a lakeland who zipped over it like it wasn't there, plus one JRT had no sense of 'staying with the pack' on walks so had to be kept on a lead, it just seems my experiences with terriers haven't generally been that bad. Also had other breeds go over the fence, but that's why I have the low fence, to identify the jumpers (with my neighbours permission who has 6' all round). I realise the need to inform people of what any dog is capable of regardless of breed, just think it's a bleak picture. Reading that I'd have no confidence I could take on a terrier, yet I've had two, and fostered another 8 or 9 and been very happy, so happy I'm going to be sticking with terriers. Just not RR terriers if they insist on a 6' fence, etc. |

Which bit are you referring to Linda as original link is broken.I have low fences,Daisy has been over once,Duncan never attempted to try  Terriers can be difficult dogs (understatement) but can also be the best - I think a realistic picture does need to be painted for anyone taking on a Terrier - just look at any general rescue site anywhere on the net and a large number of dogs looking for homes will be Terriers :( at the moment it seems to be Patterdales,Lakelands and crosses of either, both working dogs, both can be very temperamental with other dogs. |

It's the link from zandd's post - http://www.terrierrescue.co.uk/page4.htm I just thought that from reading that, I would have thought a terrier beyond me. Possibly they are, with all the problem's Fred has had, but it would have put me off terriers if I'd read that before fostering so many of them and I would have refused them! I didn't want to bash the people who run the rescue or anything, obviously they know what they are doing, and I know there are a lot in rescue was just saying it paints a very bleak picture. It was mainly the recall bit, and the bit about going over fences, as if they all do it. Possibly the ones they get in all do, which is why they are in rescue so they are right to say it to people looking on their site. Just made me feel a little bit sad. |

Good points, looking at it again as if I'd never had a Terrier I can see where you're getting at but having owned one - guess who  - that falls into most of the categories on there I can understand why they are so emphatic.Hopefully a prospective owner who isn't daunted by that then I reckon they'll make a pretty good Terrier owner. |

I've always wanted a springer spaniel, but on doing some research learned they would need more exercise than I could give on my own with a full time job. I think my life now would suit one very much (both Fred and Beauty can't come on all the walks I do as it's too much for them) but still nagging at the back of my mind is 'I could never handle one' and I think perhaps that was on my mind. That a good home may get put off. Probably by the time there will be another dog-shaped hole to fill I'll have teams of dog walkers out and about and I'll be back in the office and will need a lap dog. ;) |
