I know Brecon DAC well, I know a few people who train there. They hold a lovely show in the summer and we always get our newer members to go along and compete because it's so friendly. |

Ahh but you can start getting some groundwork in. Start teaching Maddie left and right, you can do this loads of ways but I started by using a toy and throwing it left or right and as the dog goes towards it give the command. Also start working on a really solid wait, so solid that you can leave her and so silly things like jumping up and down, waving your arms in the air and saying lots of things but she wont move until you give the release command such as Go or OK. If you have stairs on the bottom 2 start teaching her to always stop there with her back legs on the 1st or 2nd step and her front ones on the floor. Do this using a toy or treats and teach her a 'contact' command such as 'look' or 'stop' then taking a step or two away then releasing her, once she can do this start telling her the command from half way up making sure her toy or treat is there so she stops then walk past her before releasing her. If you can do this you are halfway to perfect contacts. Hope this makes sense. |

Thanks Paula, there are some good starting points there.
Funnily enough I did start this with her last night, not intentionally though. She was playing with her treat ball when one of the treats flew out of the ball to her left. I was saying to her "to your left" for her to get the treat, then just "left" and she (eventually) got to it. Throwing a ball or toy like you say would be a good start.
Also started teaching her wait, its proving not too bad at the moment, though she gets itchy feet and wants to come up to me  Only thing is, when I say wait she automatically lies down (which is nothing like the down command she knows) so is this a problem? Do I need to get her to wait in the sit position??
I think I am getting this  , our stairs are a bit of a tight squeeze as the front door falls practically off them, I do have some steps in the garden though so can try this there. |

Well, Peggy starts her agility class next Friday. I've read your tips on here so will start trying some of these. Think its going to be hilarious to start with as she does sit and a stay (just!!) - but if she's off the wall excited I cant do anything with her! I know shes going to be excited as she loves other dogs and wants to play with them all - so it will be intresting on the first night. I really hope she does well as i'd love to do competitions with her eventually. |

Ok - so off we went to our 1st agility class tonight. I got lost and couldnt find the place, and made Peggy sick in the car  with my erratic driving! so wasnt the best start we could have had.. Got there just after class had started but we hadnt missed anything so that was cool. Peggy was great at the recall bit, was good on her touch points - but was rather pants at the 'to go' bit - mostly because I forgot to bring her favourite toy so she just wasnt interested in going toward a strange toy. Overall she did well, but she was more nervous than I expected. Shes great around dogs and she was fine with all the dogs there - but she was nervous about doing all the stuff on the equipment eg the touchpoints - I could tell she wasnt comfortable with me putting her there and making her stay - but im sure she will get better and better as time goes on. Shes always nervous to start with in any new situation - and im sure once she gets used to going there she will be fine. ITs all very exciting and the time goes really quickly. :) |

:yay: she's bound to feel nervous for a the first few lessons, some of the equipment must seem rather strange to them on first sight  Don't push her in the beginning,Duncan found the seesaw very frighteneing so we just missed that out for a couple of weeks and tried again very slowly and he was fine with it.It is a lot of fun for both owner and dog so enjoy. |

Little update..... Peggy was a superstar this week! She was loving every minute of it and she did it all really really well. She actually got so excited at one point after doing the jumps, that she did come really big circles around the arena really fast :D She does this when we are out walking and shes gotten excited over playing with another dog - its really funny to watch. Anyhow - she even did the tunnel when it was fully extended and considering she is the smallest dog there - she did better than some of the bigger dogs. Go Peggy!!!!! :yay: :yay: |

 Bodie did a 7 week course for agility and was worse when he finished than when he started  , he loved it and managed to do all the obstacles but kept stopping and peeing in the tunnel and had to be man handled up the 'A' frame lol... He was seriously ill last Autumn with a nasal fungal infection, so he ended up taking 12 weeks out of Ring craft and Agility....he's fine now but its taking some getting back in to the swing of things  |
