 Lovely dogs! We can elect them as honorary terriers so you can put up more pictures! We had a class at our last fun day called 'Not Quite Obedience' specially for terriers. We had the usual sit, stay, lie down and then drinking from a tea cup and jumping uninivited onto the judge's knee as well. Totally & shamelessly rigged so a terrier would win :P A Dandie Dinmont came first, called Henry. |

Out of interest - are terriers harder to train than other breeds or easier? Mine seem to have the attention span of a goldfish...and Peggy tends to focus too much on the potential treat reward than than what she's supposed to do in order to get it  I've got a clicker training book but wondered if some breeds were just prone to be harder? |

Attention span the size of an ant's heart, but Saff's very much intelligent 8) We learnt play dead (for us, DeadDog!) last night :P But the lack of attention span ...    Makes them more fun ;) |

The training club I've joined to get Dill familiar with working around other dogs is very into obedience competitions and as Dill does seem to enjoy working, I've decided to give it a go. Ultimatley, I'd be more interetsted in working trials. Anyway, we have been allowed to skip the beginners' class and are in with the Bronze Good Citizen class. Once we move to Silver, we will also be allowed to join the Advanced class where they focus on competition stuff. I'm going to watch a comp in May near Ripon. I am a bit worried about the way the dogs have to work so close at heel and the way they are taught to 'present'. Fine if your dog is normal sized, but how can you emulate that with a tiddler? |

Hi We are new to the forum but just had to say that my JR Minnie takes part in competitive Obedience. we won out of Beginner and now work Novice and A. Little 'uns can work close it just takes a little patience. minnie has been taught with a clicker and a target stick. She was taught to hand touch as a puppy. All her exercises have been taught with clickers and food and toys. She loves it and is being placed in her Novice class so we have high hopes for the new season just starting. we are off to Cardiff tomorrow to attend a show on our way to a weeks holiday with friends. there will be 5 Border Collies, 2 Shelties, 2 JRs, a JR/Westie X and a Beardie X cross all on Holiday together in Pembrokeshire. :yippee: |

Can someone tell me what to expect from an obedience competition please? I am about to take part in one on saturday with my little terror Dave. The trainer at our class asked if I could register him on the kennel club activity register so that he could take part. But now I am panicking!!! |

Try not to panic and just enjoy yourself.(easy for me to say
 ) Have a look at this link it's very good. Obedience UK book When you get to the show you need to find the ring/s that you are in and tick yourself off and put your name on the list for your running order. You need to be at the ring ready for your go when they call you so keep an eye on what's going on. Stays take priority over everything else so you need to find the stay ring and be there at least 10 minutes before the time. The times of the stays for each class will be on the score table on your ring when you sign in. The stewards will tell you exactly what you need to do, usually you do heel on the lead then your recall then heel off the lead then retrieve but this may change a bit. In pre beginner and beginners you can talk to your dog as much as you like and at pre beginner you can reinforce the 'wait' command when doing the recall so I would advise that you say 'wait' as you turn round and while you get ready to call the dog in. You can only tell your dog to stay once so don't be tempted if they move. If it does move and comes to you just pop the lead on but don't move out of the ring as it may disturb the other dogs. If it runs out don't shout but leave the ring as quietly as possible then run like hell to catch it. Have fun. |

Thankyou! I think it was beginners obedience that the trainer said we were doing. He is sooooooooooooooo good in class, even last night when we had another class of dogs join us that he hadnt met before. He was a bit more nose-to-the-ground than usual but was to be expected I suppose! I am so worried, out of a class of about 15 dogs its just my manky little boy and 2 other dogs-who are around2 years old whereas Davey is just 1-that have been asked to compete. I cant for the life of me figure out why we were asked to do it!  |

Hopefully your instructor will be there to help you too. I would think it would be pre beginners as this is the lowest level, she may have entered you for beginners too. What show are you going to? |

Well we came 8th-out of 8!
 He was fantastic with the heelwork and the recall-one of the best-but he completely lost it with the stay and only lasted 28 seconds  If we had just been judged on the heelwork and recall he would have come in the top 3 at least. |

That's really good for your first show. The stays are always the hardest bit as they are not used to sitting with 20 odd other dogs. |
