Hi All Just wondered if anyone had any helpful tips on 'sendaway' for me and Peggy. Overall she's doing very well, but the area we have a big problem with is when I try to send her away over the jumps towards the trainer at the other end (who is waving/squaking her toy and calling her name) - she wont go. If i'm up the other end calling her, she is fine, and jumps with gusto and full energy all the way to me - but Peggy is a very insecure dog and doesnt seem to want to go on without me when I try and send her on. Im finding it hard to practice on my own aswell, so was wondering if there were some tricks of the trade that could help :) Im using her favourite toy - but overall she gets distracted easily and pays more attention to me than anything else most of the time. Her insecurity isnt going to change overnight - so hoping for some magic fix to help us in agility! All suggestions welcome as we are complete novices and just starting our 2nd course of 10 weeks for beginners. Thanks! |

You need to buy yourself a bucket
 At agility our instructor uses targeting a lot with toys and treats but rather than just waving the toy about she targets to the bucket. Treats work best with this until the dog gets the idea the you can swap to a toy. The one thing you have to remember is that if the dog goes round the jumps etc the treat/toy has to be picked up so the dog doesn't self reward for doing it wrong. To start them off have the dog by the bucket and put the treat on it showing the dog where it is you'll find they soon pick this up and my dogs only have to see Wendy with a bucket and their off. Once they are off towards the bucket start shouting 'Get it' or something so they start to associate the words with the action. |

Excellent idea - I was thinking of using food/treat somehow, but when its the other end of the riding school I was worried she wouldnt see it - but on top of a bucket makes perfect sense. Will try that this week and keep practicing. She very rarely goes around jumps - only when i've done something wrong and am in wrong place or something - usually going around corners. We are still working on that one! :D |
