Thanks for the kind comments,
:thanks: I quoted from the kennel Club Breeding Standard and from some information I was given by a local retired English Bull Terrier Breeder. I am very padantic and keep all the info I find out about the breed in a Folder and I am always on the look out for anything I can add to my file! ;) I have one regret and that is I am not in a position to work Jess, I am convinced she would make an excellent working dog as she is so eager to learn and to please. But then I think if I did work her would she have the same character she has now as just one of the family? I'll get some photo's posted as soon as I can sort some :yay: |

Heres a start: The Parson Russell Terrier Breed Profile: The Parson Russell Terrier was the first Kennel Club recognized variant of the Jack Russell terrrier, first drawn into the UK Kennel Club in 1990, and into the American Kennel Club in 2001. The Parson Russell: There are many reasons that I am attracted to the Parson variant of terrier. Firstly they are of Bold character and fierece courage. An extrovert; fearless; tough and feisty character are amongst his traits. But simultaniously he is gentle and loving with those he knows and with smaller dogs and puppies. A big dog in a small body; many have and LDS complex (Little Dog Syndrome) and often bite of more than they can chew, but will equally fight their corner.Parsons tend to be level headed and able to judge an equally matched opponant and will recover from many a kerfuffle; pretty unscathed. They will defend their master to the end and are forthright and worthy companions to any woodsman or household. They make excellent house dogs; although can be destructive and wiley if not occupied enough. They thrive on a fast paced life; enjoying agility and hunting activities, can be taught many tricks and are as happy curled up on a lap as wandering the woods and fields alonmgside their master. HISTORY: Reference: Jean and Frank Jackson-Parson Russell Terriers-An owners companion. The founder of the modern day Parson Russell terrier breed was Parson Jack Russell/Reverand John Russell (known by either name) from whom the breed takes it's name. Parsons being derived from The Reverand John Russells terriers themselves; a distinctive breed from the Wire Haired Fox terriers of the time; were starting to find favour in the show ring at the time of his death in 1883 (28th April). During his long career as a breeder the Parson remained faithful to theolder type of Fox terrier. This dog was capable of running with hounds; amicable and intelligent; it though lacked the elegance required of the show ring. It was predominantly white and the Parson chose to retain this trait- which we still see in the modern day descendants of his breed. He refined the breed and made the breed consistant in its type; whilst remaining faithful to the old type of terrier he was so fond of in his youth. The basis for the strain was the Parsons bitch Trump; who he brought in 1819 whilst a student at Oxford. After being ordained he returned to his native Devon and set to work with the church. He would never again live outside Devon and for 64 years; developed the strain of Parsons terrier using terriers found in hunt kennels and other Fox terrier breeders; whilst persuing his passion for hunting. He was doing that which many others were doing up and down the country; breeding a terrier type for the purpose of his sport.(Can Expand this to incorparate other Terrier strains of uk). I'll keep adding to it- and hopefully will take some piccies of Bob soon! Feel free to pull me up on the finer points.... probably been covered! |

A Parsons is only really a Parsons if you have KC papers to prove it ;) However a JRT is different to a Parsons :) |

It's not so confusing really...... What people tend to forget is that at the time Parson Russell was creating a strain of hunt terriers to his own specification (hound-marked, long-legged, able to run with hounds etc) there were other sporting parsons / huntsmen etc. connected to mounted packs all over the country who were striving to breed better and better working terriers too. Maybe Parson R's dogs were just exceptionally brilliant, or maybe he was just well-connected and able to spread the word about his dogs better than some, but somehow, the name gradually began to embrace the working-style fox terrier, as opposed to the dogs that were registered with the Kennel Club as Wire and Smooth Fox Terriers. Imagine the gene pool splitting 3 ways: the show dogs and subsequently the show-strain dogs that were bred and sold in huge numbers for the pet market - these are the Smooth and Wire Fox Terriers we know today. No.2: The working terriers bred for earth work. It is reasonable to assume that many hunts' terriers resembled the strain created by the parson. Remember though, it was a strain, not a breed. No.3: The odds and sods, if you like: the dogs that had either working terrier or KC regd. Fox Terrier somewhere in their genes, but were just bred through accidental matings, as pets and with no real purpose behind their breeding. Cracking little dogs, but it is these guys who have got everyone in a muddle  Over time (who knows why?!) Jack Russell became the name used to describe any hound-marked terrier, regardless of leg length or provenance. Until..... .....a group of enthusiasts decided they were going to 'rescue' the type of terrier that fitted the blueprint created by Parson R. thus distinguishing between the leggy, working terrier the Parson envisaged and all the other little doglets referd to as 'Jack Russells' As a result, the Parson Jack Russell was granted KC recognnition, so from that moment on, only KC registered dogs could cal themselves 'Parson Jack Russells' However, confusion still reigned: many people still wanted to call their dogs Jack Russells, regardless of KC registration (or not) so in an attempt to clarify things, the KC dropped the 'Jack' and the KC Registered breed became Parson Russell Terriers. So.....a dog is only a Parson Russell if he/she is KC registered as such, regardless of original ancestory or purpose  Controversial bit now....if the KC judges and exhibitors had taken more interest in hunting rather than showing for showing's sake, maybe the KC Wire and Smooth Fox Terriers would still resemble the Parson's ideal terrier and we wouldn't all be so baffled! Even now, folk are still creating their own strains. In the 80s, Brian Plummer crossed Jack Russell types with beagles and staffies to produce the ultimate rat-kiling machine and created a strain called Plummer Terriers that breed true to type, have their own breed club and hold their own shows. It doesn't mean every copper and white smooth-coated terrier is a Plummer Terrier though :) |
