I've never heard of it - what does it do?

Must say when I saw the words "matmaster" and "Janet" in the same sentence I assumed you'd found some new gadget to make your rugs even more dazzlingly clean than they are already!!

 assume it's for cutting knots out?

Another link thing

Yep it is.Does Gem's coat get knotted enough to need one? Somehow thought a cairns coat was wiry and didn't matt as much.

I had a look at the link in Lynne's posting and must say it looks like the identical thing to the Mars Coat King. On Flynn when he was very fluffy this worked wonders (as wielded by Jonathan, his breeder)! However, I was told (was it you Paula?) that a coat king must never be used on a border terrier coat! So ... is the coat fluffy or wiry? And are you showing? If so, wait for the answers from the experts on grooming!

Well thankfully she goes to be groomed next monday

I use a normal dog brush on her as a rule. The hair on her body and head is corse and doesn't get tangled. It's the hair on the inside of her legs and under belly that are getting mats. I had to cut two matted patches from her elbows the other day with scissors because I couldn't get the brush through. She had one on the edge of her back thigh too. I bought one of these mattmasters from work hoping it would break up any mats without having to cut them out with scissors. I just couldn't use it though. I held the hair so it wouldn't pull Gems skin but I just couldn't cut through it. I was wondering if anybody used one they could give me some advice on how to do it.
We don't normally have a problem, it's because the hair is quite long now underneath so roll on Monday.
A friend of mine didn't have her Cairn groomed (stripped or clipped) for the whole of the winter. When she did take her to be groomed the groomer had no choice but to shave her close all over because of the mats. She came out looking like a little otter!

Thinking about it, Widge gets these small (i.e. under half a centimetre in diameter) matted things on his underside near his back legs, where he has virtually no hair to speak of! I use childrens hair conditioner to 'lift' them away from his skin and then just trim them off. What hair he hs in this area is so fine, it's very hard to unravel, so ironically the problem should go away when he grows more (and coarser) hair down there.

Janet,

I cut the hair relatively short where the top of the leg meets the body, it stops matting and knots. If I find a knot it's always small and I just snip it out.

I'd ask you groomer to make sure those areas are cut extra short, or you can give them a trim between groomings. She may also be leaving a bit too much of a Westie-like "skirt" and the hair that hangs down from Gem's underside may need to be a bit shorter overall. The matt king would hurt like heck in that area, the skin is very tender and will pull with any heavy matt-busting.

You might want to try the matt king over Gem's coat between groomings though - it should pull a bit of hair as well as cut a bit. It will keep her coat a bit harder as it softens from clipping.

:thanks: Stacy

I will use the matmaster in between grooming so hopefully no mats will form.
I did ask the groomer not to take off a lot of hair last time with the weather being cold  I must try to brush everyday too!

Can't wait for Monday!

Gem's hair is fine and soft around her belly and top of her back legs like most Cairns. She had two big mats on each front elbow which I had to cut with scissors. It looked just like sheep wool
