Some of you will have noticed elsewhere Duncan at 3 caught and killed his first rabbit on Tuesday,I was surprised as he's not been that interested before - unlike Daisy who is a natural hunter. He is now somewhat obsessed with finding them  and I'm a bit concerned he may decide rabbit hunting is far more interesting than coming to me.I don't have a problem with him hunting, although I wouldn't encourage it - but don't want him vanishing.Anyone else have a Terrier who's discovered the thrill of the hunt relatively late? |

Dudley didn't kill his first (and only) rabbit until he was 4 and although at the yard he goes off looking for them, and foxes and rats, I don't think it made any difference to him at all, he has always buggered off in certain places and not others and it hasn't made him any less of a mummy's boy. You'll probably find that the obbession thing wears off after a while as Duds was a bit like that with the log pile where the rabbit was but after a few days when he didn't find anything he forgot about it and doesn't look they anymore at all. |

I've heard of is it mountain or moorland rescue referred to before - are they the people who use dogs to track? Well if so - and this is going to sound very daft probably - I'd buy a muslin cloth/new handkerchief and keep it in Duncans bed, taking it with you (use plastic bags to prevent your scent getting onto it) when you go walking in obvious rabbit territory. If there ever is an emergency such as him disappearing down a rabbit hole, you'll have something to hand with his scent on to get him located faster. Saw this on some American animal rescue programme once. Sounds mad, but it seemed to work. |

Keep an eye on him for now - his new 'thing' may wear off but if he's anything like Archie in his hunt for bird food in the garden he may never grow out of it  For your peace of mind at the moment maybe get a bell for his collar so if he does refuse to come away from a rabbit hole you can pinpoint his location? |

Its taken him a long while to discover he's a terrier!!
:D I must admit Breeze is obsessed at present, with anything, her recall is still 100% but the "must find it" attitude is on override! Give him a bit of time, call him back, reward with food and send him off again, i think he should be fine. Dawn. |

Boo is completely deaf when on the chase but when it's finished turns around immediately and returns thank goodness! Just that the chase can last 20/30 minutes .... Davey does the immediate chase and returns within 2 minutes. |

He is very interested now but thankfully comes back when called - if a little reluctantly - my worst worry that he may attempt to pursue one into a warren hasn't happened even though we've seen several. |
