Basically the healthier the dog the less likely it is to have a problem with fleas so you need to provide the best diet possible following, of course, our own beliefs on that! Raw garlic is one of the best anti-parasite treatments - chop it up and put in food - 1 clove daily small dogs, 2 cloves medium. Brewer's Yeast - 1 teaspoon mixed into food daily = small. 2 teaspoons = medium. Can also be rubbed into their coat. (Amended to say that if dog is subject to sensitive skin of any sort, avoid BY at all costs) Zinc - (5-20mg daily) to boost immune system. Aromatherapy Spray - Lavender, lemon and peppermint essential oils, mixed with vodka and water - spray bedding and fur. Eucalyptus, cedar, cypress and lemon can also be massaged into the coat after mixing with a base oil and combed through with a flea comb. Bach Flower Remedies - Crab Apple is fantastic for cleansing their system. Grapefruit Seed Extract - 10-20 drops to a cup of water, massage or comb through fur. Also used in a spray bottle for treating the bedding. Herbs in their bedding - Mint leaves, lavender seeds, rosemary and sage. I place these between the cushion base and their blanket. We are using Johnson's Tea Tree Oil which acts as a flea repellant and calms itchy coats. This thread is very interesting! Kellie :flower: |

Great thanks Tafia,I do worry about the chemicals in flea treatments.Would lavender oil in their bedding work too - I love the smell of it. Lynne READ the thread properly (can it be diluted with just water - seems an awful waste of good vodka :licklips: ) |

Tafia - this is brilliant. Thanks so much for posting it. Just one problem - I'm having a dense moment and I'm working out which products go inside as opposed to being used topically; can you clarify that the zinc and the Bach Flower remedies are ingested? |

 Yes, GSE features very heavily in many of those remedies!
I'm sure you could just use water but having said that, I'm not overly confident what the chemical reason for adding Vodka is so have always used it myself. Burning lavender oil in a diffuser around their bedding area might help, my favorite oil for burning is Eucalyptus (which is a must have if ever your dogs get kennel cough), especially if there's a pup in the house or one of the dogs is slightly under parr.
Yes Pam! Crab Apple Flower Remedy is readily available from any Boot's that sells a range of Flower Remedies. You can buy 5mg Zinc tablets from some Boots stores as well, if you can't find them try your local health food shop. Natural sources for zinc are meat/ poultry/eggs/shellfish/pumpkin seeds/butterbeans (my guys love pumpkin seeds and have them for training treats). I'll post some homeopathic/natural worming remedies tomorrow. |

No Bugs! on me biscuits You can always make tonnes and take them on your doggie walks to share with doggie pals; like I do or make a big batch of dough and save in batches in the freezer: Watch out the measurements vary! You will need: 1/4 Beef stock cube 1tsp Boiling water 1tblsp Vegetable oil 1/2 small Egg beaten 1/4 cup/1oz/25g Plain flour (I use gluten free; but that is optional) 1/4 cup/1oz/25g Plain Wholemeal flour (again gluten free) 1/3 cup/1oz/25g Rolled Porridge oats 1/8 cup/1oz/25g Cornmeal 6 crushed Brewers Yeast tablets or a tsp of Brewers yeast powder 1 tsp Garlic powder Extra oats for coating and flour for rolling. Method: 1. Preheat your oven to 200*c/400*F/Gas mark 6. Grease a baking tray or use a non-stick one. 2.Dissolve the stock in the boiling water and allow to cool. Mix the Egg, stock and oil together. 3. Put all dry ingredients( except the flour for rolling) into a bowl and mix together. Gradually add the stock mixture and work into a dough. 4.Roll out the dough on a floured surface anto about 5mm/1/4 inch thick. Cut out shapes using a cookie cutter or into shapes with a knife. 5. Bake for 40 mins or until golden brown.Cool and store in an airtight container for up to a week. P.s they wont last a week! From How to make a dog smile! |

Dudley has a brewers yeast tablet everyday, he started having them as someone said it could help his speed at agility. Didn't realise it was a remedy for fleas too, the other 2 will start having it now. |

Against fleas my dogs get front LINE or Advance. As alternative our dogs get: Eukacid. Some vegetable means. Eukacid one can take also as smell donors, keeps fleas far from the dwellings. Thus we make it. |

Lynne, my brain tends to not work brilliantly just before bed! Oil and water do not mix so the vodka is used to dilute the oils. Undiluted oils on bedding can become rancid. |

Because of Archie's special diet at the moment I'm not going to give him any of the oral remedies for now, but I'm interested in the garlic one! Does a clove a day result in smelly breath  I think you can also get odourless garlic oil capsules for humans so that is another option. Some reading I did yesterday suggested cutting out brewers yeast to prevent yeast infections in the skin - but it was only 1 comment on a message board so I'm still undecided about that! Tafia do you use all of the remedies or different ones at different times? |

ClaireS - I had meant to say that if there's already a skin problem not to use Brewers Yeast, well spotted! I use the garlic (never noticed them particularly having garlic breath and if I do, I'm just happy that it's masking tripe breath! To be truthful at 6 & 4 years of age their breath is as clean now as when pups) in their food, Crab Apple & GFS in their drinking water pretty much daily and feed Pumpkin Seeds rather than Zinc tablets. You can use the ordourless garlic capsuls if you prefer. Herbs in their bedding is throughout the summer months. In three and a half years I've never even found so much as one speck of flea debris in their coat - including a period in which a dog come to stay who was so infested, he'd chewed & scratched himself raw. Due to the severe circumstances that dog was treated with pharmaceutical de-fleaing products, as was all bedding and furnishings. However, I stopped short of taking the vets recommendation of steroids and opted for chickweed & marigold tea compresses or applying witch hazel to his raw skin. Heeled very quickly bless him. He'd roll over onto his back as soon as he saw me coming with the compresses or WH, and whilst I'd be applying it he'd lick my hand as though to say "oh that does feel better, thank you". |

A great way to get the dog to ingest these is to peirce them and squeeze on to the front paws for lots of lickety licking (on the top not the pads....)x |
